I would like to take a moment and encourage all residents to keep the Yakabuski family in their thoughts as well as lend their support to an upcoming fundraiser.

On the 21st of May, Mark Yakabuski was thrown from his golf cart resulting in a serious spinal injury. Over a long period of time and with extensive rehab/care his friends and family are hopeful he will regain movement.

Mark cares for his wife and 3 athletic sons. While there, you can also purchase a t-shirt or hat that reflects Mark’s passion for the game of hockey with all proceeds also going to the Yakabuski family. To send positive thoughts or questions about the fundraiser, please contact [email protected].

New City of Ottawa Planning and Development Youtube Channel

As social media continues to grow and challenge the ways in which residents may interact with one another, the City of Ottawa is also maximizing on new social mediums.

It is my pleasure to share that the Planning and Growth Management department now has its very own YouTube Channel which will feature some of the department's active projects and educational content.

Page 12 Keeping You Informed

Soon, an educational series of videos will be released following the same foundations as the City’s successful Planning Primer program. For those who are interested, you can now view closed captioned footage of the recent Building Better Connections webcast that was held on May 4, 2016. Be sure to subscribe to receive notifications of new YouTube content.

This is a fantastic addition to the City of Ottawa online network which I believe will only help residents who are interested in a better and more accessible way to understand City Planning.

Fire Hydrant Testing Begins in the City

The City of Ottawa has begun testing fire hydrants city wide this week until October. Hydrants are inspected annually to ensure that they are ready should they be needed by Ottawa Fire Services.

While hydrants are being tested, neighbouring households may experience temporary inconveniences such as discoloured water and reduced water pressure. The discoloured water, which occurs when the testing process disturbs sediments in the water pipes, does not pose any health concerns, but can stain laundry.

Residents living near a fire hydrant scheduled for full-flow testing may experience short term (10 to 20 minutes) drops in water pressure during testing. Water pressure will return to normal once the test is complete.

Residents may also experience rusty coloured water following full-flow testing. If discoloured water is noticed, residents are asked to turn off their tap for 10 to 20 minutes. This should allow work crews enough time to complete the test. After work crews have left the area, residents should turn on a cold water tap and allow it to run for about five minutes or until the water becomes clear.

Approximately 2,000 hydrants are scheduled for full-flow testing and mini-flow testing will occur on the remaining 20,000 hydrants. Full-flow testing discharges water at a high rate to verify the hydrant’s flow capacity. This calibre of testing was previously performed on the City’s 22,000 fire

Keeping You Informed Page 13 hydrants once every two years. Full-flow testing is only required initially to identify flow capacity and then once every 10 years to adequately reassess the hydrant. Mini-flow testing slowly discharges water ensuring it is functional in the event of an emergency and has little to no impact on residents. This new approach is more cost effective, ensures all City-owned hydrants are tested, reduces the impact on water quality, conserves water, and remains in compliance with the Ontario Fire Code.

Full-flow hydrant testing in Ward 6 will be taking place between June 14-30 and the entire planned work schedule is available on ottawa.ca. This will be updated regularly as work progresses. Unforeseen circumstances may require changes to the work plan, so residents should check the schedule frequently.

I would like to thank all residents for their patience and co-operation during this process.

OC Transpo Summer Service Adjustments

I would like to take a moment to provide all residents some information regarding upcoming OC Transpo service adjustments. On Sunday, June 19, new OC Transpo summer schedules begin along with several routing changes for improved service in the community of Greenboro East.

SPECIAL SUMMER WEEKEND SERVICE

Service to local museums and beaches will operate on weekends and holidays throughout the summer until September 5. Route 129 will serve the Canada Aviation and Space Museum and Route 185 will operate to the Agriculture Museum and Experimental Farm. Route 198, which starts June 18, will serve Petrie Island.

SUMMER SCHEDULES

New schedules will reflect the lower demand for service during the summer vacation period. School routes will be suspended until the fall, and there will be minor schedule reductions on mainline and peak period routes. New schedules are available at OC Transpo Customer Service Centres, by calling 613-741-4390, and at octranspo.com.

TUNNEY’S PASTURE SERVICE ADJUSTMENTS FOR LRT CONSTRUCTION

Beginning June 24, adjustments will be made at Tunney’s Pasture Station including the final Transitway segment closure to allow for O-Train Confederation Line construction. How it will look is as follows:

FRIDAY, JUNE 24:

Page 16 Keeping You Informed

On Friday, June 24 at 7 p.m., the final segment of the Transitway between Tunney’s Pasture Station and Merton Street will close permanently for O-Train Confederation Line construction. Bus service will be adjusted to use bus-only lanes on Scott Street.

FRIDAY, JUNE 24 – SUNDAY, JUNE 26:

During the transition to the new platform at Tunney’s Pasture Station, a temporary detour will be in effect from Friday, June 24 at 7 p.m. until the end of the service day on Sunday, June 26, between Westboro and Tunney’s Pasture stations. The temporary weekend detour will facilitate the opening of the new ramp that will connect the Transitway with the upper level of Tunney’s Pasture Station. Over this weekend, bus service will be detoured to operate on Scott Street between Westboro and Tunney’s Pasture stations.

The temporary weekend detour will have minimal impact on travel time and has been planned in conjunction with all nearby special events taking place during the weekend of June 24-26. Due to the closure of the Sir John A. MacDonald Parkway in the vicinity of Tunney’s Pasture Station for a cycling event on the same weekend, there may be higher than normal weekend auto volumes on Scott Street. The bus-only lanes on Scott Street east of Holland Avenue will help to mitigate any potential impacts of additional auto traffic volume on Scott Street.

MONDAY, JUNE 27:

On Monday, June 27, the temporary weekend detour ends and the Transitway will reopen for buses between Westboro and Tunney’s Pasture stations. Tunney’s Pasture Station will remain open and the lower level will remain closed. Buses will continue to operate on Scott Street between Tunney’s Pasture and downtown, and will use the new ramp from the Transitway to serve a new temporary platform on the upper level of Tunney’s Pasture Station.

For your reference, the map below and take-one flyer provides more information on the transit service adjustments that will begin on June 24.

Keeping You Informed Page 17

I am aware that many Stittsville residents who take the bus downtown require a changeover at Tunney’s Pasture. As such, I encourage all residents to plan their route downtown in advance this weekend with these changes in mind.

Following the June 24 service adjustments, the Transitway between Tunney’s Pasture and Blair stations will be fully closed to allow for the construction of the O-Train Confederation Line. These service adjustments will remain in effect until the opening of the O-Train Confederation Line in 2018.

For automated real-time bus arrival information, customers can call 613-560-1000 or text 560560 plus their four-digit bus stop number. For more information and travel planning, visit octranspo.com or call 613-741-4390.

Further details are available online at ontrack2018.ca and will be posted at the station.

Happy Father’s Day!

From one dad to another, I would like to wish a wonderfully happy father’s day to all residents. I hope that everyone gets a chance to spend time with their loved ones this Sunday and reflect upon the most important gifts that life gives us – our families.

Page 18 Keeping You Informed

With the wonderful weather upon us, now is a great time to enjoy a delicious pancake breakfast in the park (potentially by a City Councillor!), throw a baseball, watch a game, go out to a movie or even spend a lazy day on a patio. Take some time for the family and celebrate.
