Ezrat Avoteinu the Final Tefillah Before Engaging in the Shacharit
Ezrat Avoteinu The Final Tefillah before engaging in the Shacharit Amidah / Silent Meditative Prayer is Ezrat Avoteinu Atoh Hu Meolam – Hashem, You have been the support and salvation for our forefathers since the beginning….. The subject of this Tefillah is Geulah –Redemption, and it concludes with Baruch Atoh Hashem Ga’al Yisrael – Blessed are You Hashem, the Redeemer of Israel. This is in consonance with the Talmudic passage in Brachot 9B that instructs us to juxtapose the blessing of redemption to our silent Amidah i.e. Semichat Geulah LeTefillah. Rav Schwab zt”l in On Prayer pp 393 quotes the Siddur of Rav Pinchas ben R’ Yehudah Palatchik who writes that our Sages modeled our Tefillot in the style of the prayers of our forefathers at the crossing of the Reed Sea. The Israelites praised God in song and in jubilation at the Reed Sea, so too we at our moment of longing for redemption express song, praise and jubilation. Rav Pinchas demonstrates that embedded in this prayer is an abbreviated summary of our entire Shacharit service. Venatenu Yedidim – Our Sages instituted: 1. Zemirot – refers to Pesukei Dezimra 2. Shirot – refers to Az Yashir 3. Vetishbachot – refers to Yishtabach 4. Berachot – refers to Birkas Yotzair Ohr 5. Vehodaot – refers to Ahavah Rabbah 6. Lamelech Kel Chay Vekayam – refers to Shema and the Amidah After studying and analyzing the Shacharit service, we can see a strong and repetitive focus on our Exodus from Egypt. We say Az Yashir, we review the Exodus in Ezrat Avoteinu, in Vayomer, and Emet Veyatziv…. Why is it that we place such a large emphasis on the Exodus each and every day in the morning and the evening? The simple answer is because the genesis of our nation originates at the Exodus from Egypt. -

Tradition teaches that this “service” is prayer. It is written, serving Him with all you heart and soul (Deut. 2:13), about which the Sages said, “What is service of the heart? Prayer.” The number of prayers is not fixed in the Torah, nor is their format, and neither the Torah prescribes a fixed time for prayer. Women and slaves are therefore obligated to pray, since it is a positive commandment without a fixed time. Rather, this commandment obligates each person to pray, supplicate, and praise the Holy One, blessed be He, to the best of his ability every day; to then request and plead for what he needs; and after that praise and thank God for all the He has showered on him.1” According to Maimonides, both men and women are obligated in the Mitsva of prayer. -

Seven Hebrew Words for Praise All expressions of praise have faith as their basis. When the Jews heard the words for praise they understood a lot more than we do today because they understood the meaning of it. YADAH – yaw-daw (Hands to God) The Hebrew word YADAH comes from two root words. YAD which means the open hand, direction, power. And AH which has reference to Jehovah. Together they are rendered Hands to God. It carries the meaning of absolute surrender as a child does to a parent – “pick me up, I’m all yours.” Scriptures: Genesis 29:35, 2 Chronicles 20:21, Psalm 42:9-11; 109:30, Isaiah 12:1 YADAH (3034)– to throw out hands; to worship with extended hands, Ps. 7:1, 9:1, 28:7, 33:2, 42:5, 44:8, 63:4, 100:4, 134:2, 141:2. The opposite is to wail, throw ones hands complaining. Our hands are an extension of our inward nature. Aggressiveness inside – hands hit people. It is an expression of a deep surrender to God and it is an extension of our hearts desiring to exalt Him. TOWDAH – toe-dah (Court of Law) TOWDAH (8426) – see thanksgiving. In the Old Testament, it translated as “Confession”. The New Testament translates it as “to say the same thing.” The word comes from Yadah and means to extend the hands. To declare openly, freely, unreservedly. Admit as real or true. The lifting of the hands signifies agreement. The ATTITUDE for TOWDAH is: I’m thanking God. I don’t care what it looks like. -

THE NEW REFORM TEMPLE OF BERLIN: CHRISTIAN MUSIC AND JEWISH IDENTITY DURING THE HASKALAH Samuel Teeple A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2018 Committee: Arne Spohr, Advisor Eftychia Papanikolaou © 2018 Samuel Teeple All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Arne Spohr, Advisor During the first decades of the nineteenth century, Israel Jacobson (1768-1828) created a radically new service that drew upon forms of worship most commonly associated with the Protestant faith. After finding inspiration as a student in the ideas of the Haskalah, or Jewish Enlightenment, Jacobson became committed to revitalizing and modernizing Judaism. Musically, Jacobson’s service was characterized by its use of songs modeled after Lutheran chorales that were sung by the congregation, organ accompaniment, choral singing, and the elimination of the traditional music of the synagogue, a custom that had developed over more than a millennium. The music of the service worked in conjunction with Protestant-style sermons, the use of both German and Hebrew, and the church- and salon-like environments in which Jacobson’s services were held. The music, liturgy, and ceremonial of this new mode of worship demonstrated an affinity with German Protestantism and bourgeois cultural values while also maintaining Judaism’s core beliefs and morals. In this thesis, I argue that Jacobson’s musical agenda enabled a new realization of German-Jewish identity among wealthy, acculturated Jews. Drawing upon contemporary reports, letters, musical collections, and similar sources, I place the music of Reform within its wider historical, political, and social context within the well-documented services at the Jacobstempel in Seesen and the New Reform Temple in Berlin. -

Mourning Without a Minyan
mourning Without A Minyan t is our deepest hope that our world will soon heal. We pray that you will soon be able to Isafely recite the Mourner’s Kaddish with a minyan at Adath Israel. During the shiva, we remain at home and allow others to care for us. In the age of Covid-19, the community relies on telephone calls, Facetime, Skype, etc to fulfill the mitzvah ofnichum aveilim, providing comfort for those who are bereaved. In person visitation is not permissible. In the absence of a minyan, one is encouraged to recite one or both of the texts attached in the morning, afternoon, and evening – corresponding with Shacharit, Minchah, and Ma’ariv. For the time following shiva, we recognize that the Kaddish is a stand-in for a larger way of live – specifically the study of Torah and the fulfillment of mitzvot. Many believe that performing a mitzvah that was important to your loved one is even more praiseworthy than reciting the Kaddish. So too is the study of Torah done in their merit. If the recitation of Kaddish with a minyan is not possible, please consider doing a mitzvah that would have been meaningful to your loved one. At this precarious moment, checking in on isolated friends and relatives or donating money to support the many individuals who suddenly find themselves without an income are especially timely mitzvot. For study, you may consider reading the weekly Torah portion either in a chumash or online. Pirkei Avot (Ethics of our Fathers) is a wonderful and accessible ancient collection of wisdom that you should consider studying as well. -

1 HIGH HOLY DAY WORKSHOP – Elul and Selichot 5 Things to Know About Elul Elul is the Hebrew month that precedes the High Holy Days Some say that the Hebrew letters that comprise the word Elul – aleph, lamed, vav, lamed – are an acronym for “Ani l’dodi v’dodi li,” a verse from Song of Songs that means “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.” Most often interpreted as love poetry between two people, the phrase also reflects the love between God and the Jewish people, especially at this season, as we assess our actions and behaviors during the past year and hope for blessings in the coming year. Several customs during the month of Elul are designed to remind us of the liturgical season and help us prepare ourselves and our souls for the upcoming High Holidays. 1. BLOWING THE SHOFAR Traditionally, the shofar is blown each morning (except on Shabbat) from the first day of Elul until the day before Rosh HaShanah. Its sound is intended to awaken the soul and kick start the spiritual accounting that happens throughout the month. In some congregations the shofar is sounded at the opening of each Kabbalat Shabbat service during Elul. 2. SAYING SPECIAL PRAYERS Selichot (special penitential prayers) are recited during the month of Elul. A special Selichot service is conducted late in the evening – often by candlelight – on the Saturday night a week before Rosh HaShanah. 3. VISITING LOVED ONES' GRAVES Elul is also a time of year during which Jews traditionally visit the graves of loved ones. -
The Strange Blessing of Yotzer Or
THE STRANGE BLESSING OF YOTZER OR By Allen Friedman Introduction There is only one blessing whose text is altered on Shabbat and only on Shabbat: the first blessing of Keriat Shema of Shacharit. Why does this blessing have this unique status?1 To sharpen the question, it appears that the extensive insertions and substitutions made to this blessing on Shabbat were met with widespread acceptance, despite their apparent post-Talmudic creation. By contrast, the seemingly much more minor post-Talmudic insertion of “Or Chadash” as the penultimate sentence of the same blessing was met with widespread and vociferous opposition lasting many centuries. Overview We will look at the language and themes of the first of the blessings of Keriat Shema of Shacharit as recited during the first six days of the week, and the language and themes of that first blessing as recited on Shabbat, noting the similarities and differences with the weekday version. We will follow that with a look at the history of the Shabbat version and see how the differences and similarities between the two versions of the blessing have been explained – or, as the case may be, 1 I am grateful to Abe Katz for posing the question and for his extremely useful compilations of many relevant sources on tefilla. Message from the Clergy Shabbat Shalom and Welcome to Bet Torah! Whether you are with us every Shabbat, every so often, or experiencing our community for the first time, we are so glad you are here. Being present with people to share in meaning has always been Judaism’s antidote to the loneliness and alienation we can sometimes feel as human beings. With busy lives we are in ever greater need of places in which we can feel whole, fully seen, and able to be present. That place has always been the synagogue, and we at Bet Torah strive to provide an oasis of calm and connection amidst the currents of life. As a synagogue community, the global pandemic has prevented us from gathering in person. In response, we used the Talmudic emergency exit called sha'at ha'dechak or "time of crisis" in order to go online on Shabbat so that our community can connect while physically separated. The virtual space we have created provides opportunities to allow our value of inclusiveness to find its clearest expression. A special aspect of our virtual service, the Home Torah Program, allows for aliyot in the home where the Torah is, along with aliyot from a distance.
