THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER: LADINO AND INDIGENOUS PAGEANTRY IN NEOCOLONIAL GUATEMALA by Jillian L. Kite A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of The Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Florida Atlantic University Boca Raton, FL August 2014 Copyright by Jillian L. Kite 2014 ii iii ABSTRACT Author: Jillian L. Kite Title: The Eye of the Beholder: Ladino and Indigenous Pageantry in Neocolonial Guatemala Institution: Florida Atlantic University Thesis Co-Advisors: Dr. Josephine Beoku-Betts and Dr. Mark Harvey Degree: Master of Arts Year: 2014 In this thesis I utilize a feminist case study method to explore gender, race, authenticity, and nationalism in the context of globalization. Each year, Guatemala conducts two ethno-racially distinct pageants – one indigenous, the other ladina. The indigenous pageant prides itself on the authentic display of indigenous culture and physiognomies. On the contrary, during the westernized ladina pageant, contestants strive to adhere to western beauty ideals beauty and cultural norms engendered by discourses of whiteness. However, when the winner advances to the Miss World Pageant, they misappropriate elements of Mayan culture to express an authentic national identity in a way that is digestible to an international audience. In the study that follows, I examine the ways in which national and international pageants are reflective of their iv respective levels of social and political conflict and how they serve as mechanisms of manipulation by the elite at the national and global levels. v THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER: LADINO AND INDIGENOUS PAGEANTRY IN NEOCOLONIAL GUATEMALA I.

  • Examining Communication Satisfaction, Confucian Work Dynamism and Job Satisfaction: a Comparative Study of International and Domestic Hotels in Hainan, China
SEARCH: The Journal of the South East Asia Research Centre ISSN 2229-872X for Communications and Humanities Vol. 8 No. 1, 2016, pp. 105-127 Examining Communication Satisfaction, Confucian Work Dynamism and Job Satisfaction: A Comparative Study of International and Domestic Hotels in Hainan, China Wang Hua School of Communication Universiti Sains Malaysia Bahiyah Omar School of Communication Universiti Sains Malaysia © The Author(s) 2016. This article is published with open access by Taylor’s Press. ABSTRACT This study examines hotel employees’ communication satisfaction and job satisfaction levels in Hainan, China. The Communication Satisfaction Questionnaire (CSQ) and the Job Descriptive Index (JDI) were used in the investigation. This study also measures the Chinese working culture, Confucian work dynamism, and examines its relationship with hotel employees’ attitudes toward communication and job satisfaction. Using a survey and stratified sampling techniques, 40 sets of data were obtained from the staff working at four domestic and four international hotels operating in Hainan. Data were analysed using PLS analysis. The testing of measurement model shows that communication satisfaction measure for international hotel model was different from the measure for domestic hotel model. The results of structural model testing, on the other hand, show that both organisational communication satisfaction and Confucian work dynamism had significant effects on job satisfaction. Confucian work dynamism positively interacted with communication satisfaction in predicting job satisfaction, making it a significant moderator to the relationship between communication satisfaction and job satisfaction. All these relationships were found significant in both conditions; international and domestic hotels. The test of significant difference between the two models, however, yielded insignificant results.

The company reduced operating costs, increased advertising market share and had excellent on screen performances. TVNZ’s goal is to perform even better in FY2012. The global financial crisis still impacts the New Zealand economy and continues to be felt by advertising reliant media. We expect there will, however, be a gradual improvement in advertising revenues throughout FY2012. That means in FY2012 TVNZ will still have a focus on cost control, productivity improvements and efficient use of assets. The company will also keep pressure on competitors around advertising market share and continue to search for, and put to air, outstanding programmes. At a macro level, the acceleration of the structural changes in the New Zealand and international media business where digital content can be accessed almost at any time across multiple devices means TVNZ’s strategy of “inspiring New Zealanders on every screen” is locked in as the company’s mantra.
