Little Women Provides Something of a Laboratory to Test out Theories on the Appeal of the Star

B L O O M LLIITTTTLLEE WWOOMMEENN Directed by Gillian Armstrong Produced by Denise DiNovi Distributed by Columbia Pictures Released in 1994 ovies that feature stars usually perform better than those that do not. Is this because we Mare going to see the stars; because the movie is better thanks to the stars; or because a better written, better funded movie evidences a quality that attracted stars to the project in the first place? (In this last possibility, we go to see the movie, itself, the stars being ancillary.) The 1994 incarnation of Louisa May Alcott's book Little Women provides something of a laboratory to test out theories on the appeal of the star. Kirsten Dunst, fresh from her breakout role in Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles , appears as Amy—but only in her younger incarnation. When the story jumps ahead four years, we get Samantha Mathis instead. Now, Samantha Mathis is not, and will never be, a star. But at the time of the film's release Dunst, herself, was not a star. Watching the film from the future, do we give the film respect for retroactive stardom? Dunst, along with Christian Bale and Claire Danes, became well-known in the years that followed. There's a reason they became so successful. Dunst is bubbly and sardonic, providing a sort of running commentary on the goings-on at the March's very lively household. -

Likewise, reflective and introspective moments in film often align with important plot points. Separating music and dialogue from the rhythms of the image, these moments suspend time, creating a distinct temporality for the character(s) and the viewer to observe the past and the present in juxtaposition. The music of film composer Thomas Newman brings to life some of the most beautiful reflective and introspective moments in cinema. In this thesis, I approach Newman’s understudied, but highly successful film scores from narrative, musical, and audiovisual perspectives. -

Each of the entries ends with a list of easily accessible sources to lead the student to further reading on the individual and a current address. Obituary entries also are included, written to prcvide a perspective on an individual's entire career. Beginning with this volume, the magazine includes brief entries of approximately two pages each. -
