Darling Marine Center, School of Marine Sciences, University of Maine, Walpole, ME 04573, USA Received 3 November 1998; received in revised form 30 April 1999; accepted 5 May 1999 Abstract Three decapod species in the Gulf of Maine (American lobster Homarus americanus Milne Edwards, 1837, rock crab Cancer irroratus Say, 1817, and Jonah crab Cancer borealis Stimpson, 1859) were investigated to determine how their patterns of settlement and post-settlement abundance varied at different spatial and temporal scales. Spatial scales ranged from centimeters to hundreds of kilometers. Abundances of newly settled and older (sum of several cohorts) individuals were measured at different substrata, depths, sites within and among widely spaced regions, and along estuarine gradients. Temporal scales ranged from weekly censuses of new settlers within a season to inter-annual comparisons of settlement strengths. Over the scales considered here, only lobsters and rock crabs were consistently abundant in their early post- settlement stages. Compared to rock crabs, lobsters settled at lower densities but in speci®c habitats and over a narrower range of conditions. The abundance and distribution of older individuals of both species were, however, similar at all scales. This is consistent with previous observations that, by virtue of high fecundity, rock crabs have high rates of settlement, but do not discriminate among habitats, and suffer high levels of post-settlement mortality relative to lobsters. -

Sediment Properties of Pantai Punggur
SEDIMENT PROPERTIES OF PANTAI PUNGGUR 1ZARINA MD ALI, 2LAI WAI TAN, 3SYED MOHD MOHARJIR SYED TAHAR, 4AYU FADILLAH ABD HAKIMD Department of Water and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, 86400 Batu Pahat, Johor E-mail: [email protected] Abstract- Pantai Punggur or Punggur beach is one of the critically eroded locations identified along the south-west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Before erosion mitigation is proposed, initial investigations including the determination of sediment properties along the shore should be made. In this study, pantai Punggur has been found to be a very mild-sloped mud flat with slope between 1:400 and 1:1000. From the soil samples collected along the shoreline in 2012 and 2013, Punggur beach is classified as having marine-clay sand with 75.83% to 122.63% moisture content and 2.2% to 11.2% organic content. Along the landward limit of the nearshore zone, the sediment consisted of well-graded sand while along the seaward limit, the sediment consisted of marine clay. Specific gravity for the sand is found to be between 1.1 and 1.85, while for the marine clay is 2.62. Based on Stokes’ equation, the settling velocities obtained for sand samples are between 0.020 m/s and 1.197 m/s, and for clay samples are between 7.15 107 m/s to 3.23 105 m/s. Desert Islands
Desert Islands Geographers say there are two kinds of islands. This is valuable information for the imagination because it confirms what the imagination already knew. Nor is it the only case where science makes mythology more concrete, and mythol ogy makes science more vivid. Continental islands are accidental, derived islands. They are separated from a continent, born of disarticulation, erosion, fracture; they survive the absorption of what once contained them. Oceanic islands are originary, essential islands. Some are formed from coral reefs and display a genuine organism. Others emerge from underwater eruptions, bring ing to the light of day a movement from the lowest depths. Some rise slowly; some disappear and then return, leaving us no time to annex them. These two kinds of islands, continental and originary, reveal a profound opposition between ocean and land. Continental islands serve as a reminder that the sea is on top of the earth, taking advantage of the slightest sagging in the highest structures; oceanic islands, that the earth is still there, under the sea, gathering its strength to punch through to the surface. We can assume that these ele ments are in constant strife, displaying a repulsion for one another. In this we find nothing to reassure us. Also, that an island is deserted must appear philo sophically normal to us. Humans cannot live, nor live in security, unless they assume that the active struggle between earth and wateLis over, or at least con tained. People like to call these cwo elements mother and father, assigning them gender roles according to the whim of their fancy.
