Circus Juventas Spring Session Guide 2021 Circus Juventas Spring Session Guide 2021 A nonprofit, 501(c)3 performing arts circus school for youth dedicated to inspiring artistry and self -confidence through a multicultural circus arts experience www.circusjuventas.org Welcome to Spring Session! Due to state mandates, we will continue to be operating at a limited capacity for spring session. Luckily for CJ, the large, open nature of our facility and auxiliary spaces within the building provide plenty of room to meet these requirements while still being able to offer a wide range of classes and levels to our families. The health and safety of our students, staff, and community is our top priority, and we are working diligently to adhere to all mandates and recommendations from Governor Walz, the Minnesota Department of Health, and the CDC. To view our preparedness plan, click here. Please also see how we have ranked our classes into CJ Stay Safe Categories on page 10. Our registration process carefully considers the placement of each student to find the best class for their interests, skills, and schedule. This guide helps focus your choices. Start narrowing down by genre (i.e. experience, acrobatics, aerial, etc.) and use the table of contents below or the index of classes on pages 2-4 of the guide to find a specific class. We highly recommend you take the time to read this entire guide, especially the pages about important dates (page 8). Linda first entered Circus Juventas with her husband and two children when the new big top doors opened in September of 2001. Through the years many different hats were worn by Linda, including School Administrator and Logistics Coordinator, and she watched the circus grow from a few hundred to over 1,000 students. While her expertise will be missed, we are happy she can spend more time gardening and with her family in their new home. The amazing Shannon Hartle (our Development Assistant) is adding a hat as Interim Assistant to the Executive Director! Shannon will be working alongside Dan and Bethany in the Executive Department helping to make sure all operations are running smoothly under the big top. Outside of work, Shannon enjoys playing with her kitten, Ollie, FaceTiming her family, reading, and dancing. Shannon received her BFA in dance from the University of Iowa in 2019 along with a minor in communication studies and an entrepreneurship in performing arts certificate.     2019 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS SESSION A: August 5-11 PERIOD 1: 10:00 - 10:55 AM Acting the Song - Denise Blase, 13+ In this class, songs will be approached from the position of an actor with the logic, intention, and emotion behind the music being analyzed and truthfully expressed. Bring a song you are working on or Denise will help you choose one. All styles welcome. Either accompany yourself or Denise will on the piano. Students will learn how to break down a song and connect to the piece through both the lyrics and the music. This is the perfect class for singers/actors who want to dig deep into bringing more expression and dynamic interpretation to their singing. Opportunity to work on solos, duets and/or small group numbers. Caz Horns - Jessica Jones, 12+ Come join the house horn section, available to perform with many different bands in camp, including the jazz, rock and gospel ensembles! We'll learn the music for each ensemble and will also rehearse with the rock band (and other ensembles as possible). Then we'll perform!     The Prescott Clowns From Prescott Elementary School Oakland, California This energetic group of clowns is directed in an after school program by Aileen Moffitt, a second grade teacher, aka "Irma La Clown." These children receive training in circus skills from professionals, then dazzle everyone with their juggling, unicycle riding, and dancing. They give back to their community tenfold with workshops in classrooms and performances at many commu- nity events, nursing homes, and shelters -- besides a long list of school assemblies. "Wherever we perform -- from lavish banquet receptions to small neighborhood events -- it is our intention to dispel negative myths about the children of West Oakland. And we do!"     Life? It’s A Circus! Teacher Resource Pack (Primary) INTRODUCTION Unlike many other forms of entertainment, such as theatre, ballet, opera, vaudeville, movies and television, the history of circus history is not widely known. The most popular misconception is that modern circus dates back to Roman times. But the Roman “circus” was, in fact, the precursor of modern horse racing (the Circus Maximus was a racetrack). The only common denominator between Roman and modern circuses is the word circus which, in Latin as in English, means "circle". Circus has undergone something of a revival in recent decades, becoming a theatrical experience with spectacular costumes, elaborate lighting and soundtracks through the work of the companies such as Circus Oz and Cirque du Soleil. But the more traditional circus, touring between cities and regional areas, performing under the big top and providing a more prosaic experience for families, still continues. The acts featured in these, usually family-run, circuses are generally consistent from circus to circus, with acrobatics, balance, juggling and clowning being the central skillsets featured, along with horsemanship, trapeze and tightrope work. The circus that modern audiences know and love owes much of its popularity to film and literature, and the showmanship of circus entrepreneurs such as P.T. Barnum in the mid 1800s and bears little resemblance to its humble beginnings in the 18th century. In the midst of a steady rain Circus Galaxy folded in that .city on May 9th. Early this year announcements about the circus indicated it would rival the best shows on the road. Phone crews started their San Antonio promotion about two months ago. While they were vague about the show's name they were positive it was a "large tented show" with the best of everything. CFA's who saw the circus at Victoria described it as "a small show" with no show owned equipment. They called it strictly "a drum and organ show" with the Oscarian Family and some Mexican performers.     BRIO Youth Training Company (ages 8-18) September 2020 - June 2021 1 Brio Program Overview About Brio The Brio Youth Training Company is a ten-month developmental program preparing young circus artists to pursue the joy and wonder of circus with greater intensity. Brio company members will have the opportunity to work with professional performers and world-class instructors to build skills and explore the limitless world of circus arts. Our overarching goal is to facilitate the development of circus skills, creativity, and professionalism, ​ at an appropriate level for the development of our students within a program that is engaging, challenging, growth-oriented, and fun. The structure is designed to be clear— with three levels of intensity—yet flexible ​ enough to respond to individuals’ needs. Candidates should have a background in movement disciplines such as dance, gymnastics, martial arts, parkour, diving, or ice skating, and a desire to bring their passion for the circus arts to the next level. Ideal Brio company members are ages 8 to 18 and interested in exploring the possibilities of circus arts; members may be looking forward towards next steps in our Elements adult training company or circus college, or may just be excited to work with a community of creative and dedicated young artists!
