Broman, Advisor In their book Ten Little Title Tunes: Towards a Musicology of the Mass Media, Philip Tagg and Bob Clarida build on Tagg’s previous efforts to define the musical affect of popular music. By breaking down a musical example into minimal units of musical meaning (called musemes), and comparing those units to other musical examples possessing sociomusical connotations, Tagg demonstrated a transfer of musical affect from the music possessing sociomusical connotations to the object of analysis. While Tagg’s studies have focused mostly on television music, this document expands his techniques in an attempt to analyze the musical affect of Howard Shore’s score to Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. This thesis studies the ability of Shore’s film score not only to accompany the events occurring on-screen, but also to provide the audience with cultural and emotional information pertinent to character and story development. After a brief discussion of J.R.R. Tolkien’s description of the cultures, poetry, and music traits of the inhabitants found in Middle-earth, this document dissects the thematic material of Shore’s film score. -

Six plates are now recognized, whose motions and collisions have created the mountains of Middle-earth and the rift structure down which the River Anduin flows. -

Death and the Númenóreans: Is This Life All There Is? Eric Gilhooly / 16 Marzo, 2017 In Tolkien’s world of Arda, elves are the elder children of Ilúvatar, also known as the One. Elves receive the gift of immortality and their spirits will remain with the world until its end. But Ilúvatar’s younger children, men, are destined to be mortal. We see them, especially the men of Númenor, in desperate struggle with their mortality at various moments throughout Tolkien’s works. In these next pages I’d like to analyze and compare how two of the greatest men in Middle Earth’s legendarium faced death and the motives they held for their choices at death’s door. But before we look at our two examples of attitudes before death (and life), it would be wise to see what Tolkien himself writes as the view or oral tradition of the elves about men and death at the beginning of The Silmarillion: [Ilúvatar] willed that the hearts of Men should seek beyond the world and should find no rest therein. […] [T]he sons of Men die indeed, and leave the world; wherefore they are called the Guests, or the Strangers. Death is their fate, the gift of Ilúvatar, which as Time wears even the Powers shall envy. But Melkor has cast his shadow upon it, and confounded it with darkness, and brought forth evil out of good, and fear out of hope. Yet of old the Valar declared to the Elves in Valinor that Men shall join in the Second Music of the Ainur; whereas Ilúvatar has not revealed what he purposes for the Elves after the World’s end, and Melkor has not discovered it. -

The Tolkien Society – Essays www.tolkiensociety.org Death and funerary practices in Middle-earth By Pat Reynolds I would like to take you with me on a perilous journey. As readers of Tolkien you will perhaps recall the two types of journey for which he is famed. The first is the hero-quest, as exemplified by Bilbo Baggins in the The Hobbit, and second is the allegorical death journey, most explicitly taken by Niggle in Leaf by Niggle. Death is one of a handful of life experiences which are irrevocable changes. Like birth, it is a one-way ticket. Unlike birth, it usually occurs when the individual has made many links with his or her community. The attitudes and beliefs of that community are reflected in the way they treat the dead: how the body is removed from the community of the living (or maintained within it), the formal opportunities for grief and the proscribed forms which grief may take, and beliefs about what happens to the dead person: does she "go on a journey", or does he "come back to haunt us?" or do they both dispense advice and comfort as revered ancestors? I want to take you on this deathly journey because I am particularly interested in the power that many readers find in Middle-earth. The tributes to Tolkien published in a recent edition of Mythlore (Mythlore 69 pp. 32-48) include No other work can bring the same kind of joy to our lives (Marianne Russell, New York, USA.), and Does any other work of fiction give the reader so overwhelming a feeling of supreme significance in a narrative? (Canon Norman Power, Birmingham, England). -

A Structural Analysis of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Textural Composition Centering on The Silmarillion 文学研究科英文学専攻博士後期課程在学 松 本 裕 子 Yuko Matsumoto 1: Introduction/2: Methods/3: Textural Analysis/ 4: Compound Text/5: Conclusion Chapter 1: Introduction The purpose of this present thesis is to analyze the textural composition of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien’s The Silmarillion: The Silmarillion as a single published work separate from The Lord of the Rings (LOTR). Certainly, the former is very closely connected with the latter, especially, its last part, OF THE RINGS OF POWER AND THE THIRD AGE; the latter can be said to be a natural extension of the former in this sense. On the other hand, however, Quenta Silmarillion is formally supposed to be a single piece of work,1 though it is the essential part of The Silmarillion as a book. In brief there are two kinds of The Silmarillion, or more correctly, two levels of The Silmarillion: The Silmarillion in a broad sense and The (Quenta) Silmarillion in a narrow sense. This thesis treats The Silmarillion in the broad sense. Here we must not miss the following points. The work involved is based upon a vast corpus of materials put together under the title of The History of Middle-Earth: from which another book, Unfinished Tales, was published by Christopher Tolkien, his son, after Tolkien’s death. So it cannot be regarded as Tolkien’s edited work. Christopher Tolkien made a comment on that issue in the introduction of Unfinished Tales;2 1 The Silmarillion is made up of five parts of the tales: AINULINDALЁ, VALAQUENTA, Quenta Silmarillion, AKALLABÊTH, and OF THE RINGS OF POWER AND THE THIRD AGE.
