Situational Analysis of Water Resources in Faisalabad City (Establishing a Case for Water Stewardship) 1 Foreword I would like to congratulate the team of WWF Pakistan as well as their consultant Dr. Sher Jamal and his team of researchers for successfully preparing this comprehensive research report on the water resources of Faisalabad. Engr. Ahmad Hassan Chairman, FCCI Faisalabad is the third largest city of Pakistan by population and one of the Standing Committee on largest business hubs of the country. The city and its surrounding areas are R&D/CPEC home to most Pakistan’s textiles and clothing manufacturing industry, which plays a vital role in the country’s economy. Textiles and related products have the largest share in our national exports, and Faisalabad is the largest contributor to this exports group. The International Labour and Environmental Standards application in Pakistan’s Textile and Leather SMEs (ILES) is a 6 years project, funded by the European Union (EU), being implemented in Pakistan jointly by WWF and ILO. ILES basically comprises of 2 components, Labour and Environment; the labour section being dealt by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the environment section being dealt by WWF- Pakistan. The project is being implemented in 4 major cities of Pakistan including Lahore, Faisalabad, Sialkot, and Karachi. As part of this project, WWF has initiated many different activities in Faisalabad including, City Wide Partnership Sessions, Capacity Building Sessions for SMEs on Smart Environment Management Practices as well as this comprehensive study on the situational analysis of water in Faisalabad. Given the severe water crisis Pakistan is expected to face in the coming years, I would like to mention that this study by WWF comes at the right time, helping to increase our awareness regarding the situation of water in Faisalabad. I strongly believe that the recommendations given in this report should be implemented by the relevant stakeholders on an urgent basis in order to successfully deal with the water crisis. In the end, I once again congratulate all team members of WWF-Pakistan and NUST who have been associated with the preparation of this report. 2 Author’s Profile Dr. Sher Jamal is a renowned environmental expert having specialization in wastewater treatment systems.
