3D Printing Lesson Plan (Beginner Level)

Date(Month/Day/Year): Duration: 1 hour Course Name The Little Class size 20 Grade Teacher 2nd grade Content Area English Language Arts Level This lesson first introduces the author and his fairy tale, The Little Topic Mermaid. The students will be able to understand:  English Language Arts: Lesson 1. Who is Hans Christian Andersen. Content 2. The role of magic in a fairy tale. (taking as an example). Objectives 3. Compare Andersen’s version to the Disney movie of The Little Mermaid.

Incorporation Students will use the 3D models of the main character as a prompt for completing the story map of 3D Printing activity.

Through the use of 3D printing, student will be given a chance to engage in “demonstration and application” as a hands-on learning extension while learning about literature.

Rationale of Demonstration: Students will demonstrate their ability to use 3D models as prompts for the story 3D Printing: map. Application: Students use technology to engage in a literature activity related to The Little Mermaid.  Literature: - Lower level students: LAFS.2.RL.1.2: Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and CPALMS determine their central message, lesson, or moral. Introduction Time: ___ minutes - Start the class by greeting students, then ask if any one of the students have ever seen a mermaid before.

- Tell students that The Little Mermaid was written by a man named Hans Christian Andersen. (Presentation of author: Hans Christian Andersen was born in in 1805. 211 years after he passed away, his tales are still being enjoyed by people today. There is a statue of The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. It is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the country.) *Notes: Teacher decides how additional information is necessary to relate to students based on their level of understanding. - Use the Internet to search for a picture of The Little Mermaid statue sitting next to the water.

- Show students a picture of what Hans Christian Andersen looked like.

- Pull up a world map on the computer screen and projector to point out the location of Denmark. Tell students that people in Denmark usually speak Danish. Ask if any of the students can speak a foreign language. Play audio recording of how to say The little mermaid in Danish for students to hear what Danish sounds like.

Content Presentation Time: ___ minutes - Before sharing with the students the story of The Little Mermaid, ask students to think about one thing they liked and one thing they did not like about the story while they are listening to the story being read.

- Read the story of The Little Mermaid aloud to the students.

- Explain the role of magic in the fairy tale (Notes: Pay attention to how magic is used in the story. It can be used for good reasons (The Little Mermaid becomes the Daughter of the Air through her sacrifice for the Prince’s happiness.) Magic can also be used to cause harm: The Sea Witch asks the Little Mermaid to exchange her beautiful voice for the magic potion to make her a human.)

- Explain to students the adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale in the Disney movie. The teacher plays the entire 1998 Disney version of the Little Mermaid to the class. After students are finished watching, discuss the differences with the students. (E.g. Thanks to modern adaptations, many people initially believe that The Little Mermaid ends with the main character marrying the prince. In Andersen’s original tale, she sacrifices her life for the prince’s happiness.)

- Ask the class the following questions for discussion: *Discussion Questions: - Q1: Which version of The Little Mermaid did you like better, Disney’s or Andersen’s? Why? - Q2: If you were the Little Mermaid, would you have made a bargain with the Sea Witch to become a 3 human being?

3D Printing Activity Time: ___ minutes

- Activity: Pass out the “Fairy Tale Story Map – The Little Mermaid” worksheet. Pass out the printed 3D characters of The Little Mermaid, the Prince, and the Sea Witch to the groups of students (3 in a group). Work together to describe what happened in the story. Teacher will go around the room to check students’ progress and see where they are having trouble.

Note: During the 3D printing activity component of the lesson, the teacher will explain technological vocabulary words such as :

Stl file: A file especially designed for printing 3D models.

Wrap Up Time: __ minutes - Let students get a “sneak peek” of the next class. Tell students that they will be put into groups to role- play the characters in The Little Mermaid.

Lesson Extension Time: __ minutes

- Play selections from the Harry Potter movie for students to watch how magic is used in another context.

 Notes 5. If there is not enough time for students to print the model during class time, the teacher will print it for them
