Massachusetts Lobstermen’s Association Member Benefit Program Account # 1443250

Sullivan Tire & Auto Service has designed a Member Benefit Program specifically for associates of MA Lobstermen’s Assoc. and their family members!

THE PROGRAM

A special account number – 1443250 -- has been assigned to the MA Lobstermen’s Assoc. member account. This account number easily identifies members and their vehicles for specific prices and discounts. This account can only be used for repairs with cash, check or credit card payment. Member invoices cannot be mistakenly charged to a company account.

This benefit program is offered at over 50 Sullivan Tire & Auto Service locations throughout New England and provides a 10% discount on all parts and labor – except sale items. Tires are always at an everyday low price and receive no discount. Once a member’s vehicle is profiled in our system, an alert will notify any Sullivan Tire location that this customer is enrolled in the program and the discounts will be calculated automatically.

This is a valuable benefit that MA Lobstermen’s Assoc. shares with its members, offering them consistent pricing on tires and auto service that takes advantage of Sullivan Tire’s 62 years of automotive expertise in the New England area.

MEMBER BENEFIT

All that’s needed when a member brings their vehicle to Sullivan Tire is to announce their status with MA Lobstermen Assoc. and we’ll take it from there. The 10% benefit will be reflected on their final invoice - for all applicable services. Courtesy Shuttles are available at all Sullivan Tire locations.

If you have any questions regarding this program and its benefits, please contact Rich Jennings, B2B Representative @ 781.733.4178. “ALWAYS HERE… TO GET YOU THERE” *Store locator: 877.855.4826 WWW.SULLIVANTIRE.COM 10• M assachusetts L o b s t e r m e n ’ s A s s o c i a t i o n • w w w . l o b s t e r m e n . c o m 2 0 1 7 u n e J WE DELIVER FRESH LOBSTER BAIT

THE MLA LEGAL DEFENSE FUND

The Massachusetts Lobstermen’s Association continues to need support for its Legal Defense Fund. This dedicated fund has been and will be used for the purpose of defending the Massachusetts lobster fishermen from legal and fisheries management action that could seriously impact our fishermen’s ability to conduct their businesses and earn a living. As we all know, any legal action costs lots of money and this Association needs to be prepared. We certainly would prefer and will continue to try and resolve issues on our fishery without going into court but we must be ready to do so in order to protect our industry and our individual fishermen’s livelihoods. These are real threats and our members frequently say – just sue them – well, that’s fine to say but to do that we need your support. Any contribution you can afford to make to this fund will be held in our legal defense fund and used only for defraying legal expenses if and when they are needed.

Thank you for your continued support. 18• M assachusetts L o b s t e r m e n ’ s A s s o c i a t i o n • w w w . l o b s t e r m e n . c o m

J Educating the public

The MLA receives numerous calls for the MLA’s participation at a multitude of events throughout the year whether it is to give a talk on the commercial fishing industry, participate in a local festival or marine trade show or be a judge at a seafood throw down one never knows what the inquiry holds.

We do our best to make sure the request is met and with over 1800 members from Canada to Virginia fishing for lobsters, crabs, scallops and groundfish we try to accommodate them with the appropriate industry contact in their area. While you may be thinking….NO WAY…..get up and talk in front of a group of people!? Remember, you are the expert and know your business better than anyone out there, why not give it a try!

By educating the layperson on the whole host of details on running a commercial fishing business today generally renders more supporters for the local commercial fishing industries as a whole. There have been several occasions when we are talking with people at a festival about everything fishing they leave with a realistic understanding and generally say “I never knew fishing was so complicated”, they are informed and will now think twice about where their seafood is coming from and how it is caught.

Currently many of you are already giving talks and participating at local events and we would like to hear from you so we can put an article with photos on the event in this newspaper. Please send along an article and photos to [email protected] HYDRO-SLAVE SAME DAY SERVICE AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT

The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries’ (DMF) Industry-Based Survey for Gulf of Maine Cod (Cod IBS) began again in April 2017 and is now into its second year. The survey is being conducted in federal waters from Cape Cod Bay to Casco Bay and includes Massachusetts and New Hampshire state waters. This important cooperative research effort has several direct benefits to New England commercial and recreational fisheries, including lobster.

The cod IBS is conducted onboard the F/V Miss Emily, a green hulled 53’ trawler based out of Scituate MA. Each month the vessel attempts 50 randomly-selected tows that are evenly distributed throughout the survey area. The biggest challenge for the survey is the presence of fixed gear at tow sites. Although DMF makes every possible effort to avoid fixed gear, conflicts do occur. This creates an unsafe situation, typically resulting in a monetary loss to the fishermen and the survey. Also, the presence of fixed gear negatively affects tow completion rates, resulting in a loss of critical data.

In order to facilitate the completion of tows and minimize gear interactions, DMF has identified planned tows for the month of June in areas where high densities of fixed gear have burdened the survey. Rather than giving one central point, we have identified a tow line with coordinates at either end. Note that the vessel requires a clear path that is approximately 1500 feet wide and 1.5 nautical miles long and are requesting that all gear be temporally removed from these areas.

The attached table contains a tentative schedule and a list of tows that will be attempted in June. If it is not possible to survey the identified tow line, the survey vessel will find a new tow within 2.25 nautical miles of the coordinates.

Updates on future planned tows and their completion will be available from the Cod IBS website and text messages sent by the cod IBS text message alert system. Additionally updates will be provided to the Maine Lobstermen’s Association, Massachusetts Lobstermen’s Association, and New Hampshire Fish and Game.

If you have questions regarding the Cod IBS please contact William Hoffman at (978) 281-0308 x106.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation,
