Received 12 May, 2020; Accepted 8 June, 2020 Lichtheimia ramosa, a ubiquitous clinically important mould was isolated during a screen for thermotolerant fungi obtained from soil on a freshly burnt field in Ikorodu, Lagos State. In the laboratory, as expected it grew more luxuriantly on Potato Dextrose Agar than on size limiting Rose Bengal Agar. The isolate had mycelia with a white cottony appearance on both media. It was then identified based on morphological appearance, microscopy and by fungal Internal Transcribed Spacer ITS-5.8S rDNA sequencing. This might be the first report of molecular identification of L. ramosa isolate from soil in Lagos, as previously documented information could not be obtained. Mucormycosis is a rare type of fungal infection that occurs through exposure to fungi called mucormycetes. These fungi commonly occur in the environment particularly on leaves, soil, compost and animal dung and can entre the body through breathing, inhaling and exposed wounds in the skin. The oxygen supply by contaminated pipes and use of industrial oxygen along with dirty cylinders in the COVID-19 patients for a longer period of time has created a perfect environment for mucormycosis (Black fungus) infection. Aware Global Hospital, Hyderabad, India Invasive fungal infection in burn injury is caused by inoculation of fungal spore from patient skin, respiratory tract or from care giver. The risk factors for acquiring fungal infection in burns include age of burns, total burn size, full thickness burns, inhalational injury, prolonged hospital stay, late surgical excision, open dressing, central venous catheters, antibiotics, steroid treatment, long-term artificial ventilation, fungal wound colonization, hyperglycemic episodes and other immunosuppressive disorders. Invasive fungal infection with Absidia corymbifera is rare opportunistic infection encountered in patient with burn injury. The key for treatment is early clinical diagnosis, wide and repeated debridement and systemic and local antifungal treatment. We describe a case of invasive fungal infection with A. corymbifera in a patient with post-electrical scalp burn with late presentation after 10 days of injury in an immunocompetent patient. Among fungal infections (mycoses) zygomycoses are exceptionally severe with mortality rate exceeding 50%. Immunocompromised hosts, transplant recipients, diabetic patients with uncontrolled keto-acidosis, high iron serum levels are at risk. Zygomycota are capable of infecting hosts immune to other filamentous fungi. The infection follows often a progressive pattern, with angioinvasion and metastases. Moreover, current antifungal therapy has often an unfavorable outcome. Zygomycota are resistant to some of the routinely used antifungals among them azoles (except posaconazole) and echinocandins. The typical treatment consists of surgical debridement of the infected tissues accompanied with amphotericin B administration. The latter has strong nephrotoxic side effects which make it not suitable for prophylaxis. Delayed administration of amphotericin and excision of mycelium containing tissues worsens survival prognoses. More than 30 species of Zygomycota are involved in human infections, among them Mucorales are the most abundant. -

VON ARX Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures, Baarn, Netherlands*) Summary. — The Mucoraceae are redefined and contain mainly the genera Mucor, Circinomucor gen. nov., Zygorhynchus, Micromucor comb, nov., Rhizomucor and Umbelopsis char, emend. Mucor s. str. contains taxa with black, verrucose, scaly or warty zygo- spores (or azygospores), unbranched or only slightly branched sporangiophores, spherical, pigmented sporangia with a clavate or obclavate columolla, and elongate, ellipsoidal sporangiospores. Typical species are M. mucedo, M. flavus, M. recurvus and M. hiemalis. Zygorhynchus is separated from Mucor by black zygospores with walls covered with conical, often furrowed protuberances, small sporangia with a spherical or oblate columella, and small, spherical or rod-shaped sporangio- spores. Some isogamous or agamous species are transferred from Mucor to Zygorhynchus. Circinomucor is introduced for Mucor circinelloides, M. plumbeus, M. race- mosus and their relatives. The genus is characterized by cinnamon brown zygospores covered with starfish-like projections, racemously or sympodially branched sporangiophores, spherical sporangia with a clavate or ovate columella and small, spherical or broadly ellipsoidal sporangiospores. Micromucor is based on Mortierclla subg. Micromucor and is close to Mucor. The genus is characterized by volvety colonies, small, light sporangia with an often reduced columella and small, subspherical sporangiospores. -

International Biological Program November 1975 ABSTRACT The distribution of fungi in soils along the Mauna Loa Transect was deter mined by an approach employing specific fungal reference genera, selective isolation methods, and a combination of analytical techniques. Two sets of transect ~ones were determined on the basis of fungal distribution. The influence of environmental factors, particularly those relating to soil, vascular plant communities, and climate, are interpreted according to distribution patterns. The distribution of fungal groups coincided clearly with vascular plant communities of the transect as defined by other studies. Features of the structure, stability, and development of fungal communities, and of the ecological roles of certain fungi are indicated by the results. The composition, spatial distribution, and environmental relationships of fungal communities along the Mauna Loa Transect are compared with situations in other insular and continental ecosystems in order to further characterize and elucidate the ecology of the Hawaiian soil-borne mycoflora.
