An annotated list of Italian Renaissance humanists, their writings about Jews, and involvement in Hebrew studies, ca. 1440-ca.1540 This list, arranged in chronological order by author’s date of birth, where known, is a preliminary guide to Italian humanists’ Latin and vernacular prose and poetic accounts of Jews and Judaic culture and history from about 1440 to 1540. In each case, I have sought to provide the author’s name and birth and death dates, a brief biography highlighting details which especially pertain to his interest in Jews, a summary of discussions about Jews, a list of relevant works and dates of composition, locations of manuscripts, and a list of secondary sources or studies of the author and his context arranged alphabetically by author’s name. Manuscripts are listed in alphabetical order by city of current location; imprints, as far as possible, by ascending date. Abbreviations: DBI Dizionario biografico degli Italiani (Rome: Istituto della enciclopedia italiana, 1960-present) Kristeller, Iter Paul Oskar Kristeller, Iter Italicum: A Finding List of Uncatalogued or Incompletely Catalogued Humanistic Manuscripts of the Renaissance in Italian and Other Libraries; Accedunt alia itinera, 6 vols (London: Warburg Institute; Leiden: E. J. Brill, 1963-1991) Simon Atumano (d. c. 1380) Born in Constantinople and became a Basilian monk in St John of Studion there. Bishop of Gerace in Calabria from 1348 until 1366, and Latin archbishop of Thebes until 1380. During his time in Thebes, which was the capital of the Catalan duchy of Athens, he studied Hebrew and in the mid- to late-1370s he began work on a polyglot Latin-Greek-Hebrew Bible dedicated to Pope Urban VI. -

Giovanni Mercurio da Correggio's Appearance in Italy as Seen through the Eyes of an Italian Jew Abstract The literary evidence describing the revelation of the strange Christian prophet Giovanni Mercurio da Correggio in the communities of Italy and France at the end of the fifteenth and the beginning of the sixteenth century has been treated with considerable interest by a number of scholars. W.B. McDaniel was the first to publish the existing evidence on this unusual figure, together with the text of a hermetic plague tract attributed to him with an English translation. These sources portray a divinely inspired prophet, together with his wife, five children, and his disciples, making his way as a mendicant through Italy and France. -

Laboratoire d’Excellence HASTEC Rapport d’activité final Contrat Post-doctoral Année universitaire 2017-2018 par Lucia Maddalena Tissi « La symphonie des savoirs dans le De perenni philosophia d’Agostino Steuco» Laboratoire de rattachement : LEM (Laboratoire d’études sur les monothéismes - UMR 8584 Correspondant scientifique : Brigitte Tambrun Programme Collaboratif 2 : « Savoir scientifique, savoir religieux, savoir sociaux » Sommaire Résumé du projet de recherche Le projet de recherche, que j’ai développé dans le cadre de mon post doctorat HaStec pour l’année 2017-2018, a porté sur la figure d’Agostino Steuco et, notamment, sur la symphonie des savoirs dans son ouvrage De perenni philosophia. Publié pour la première fois à Lyon en 1540 cet ouvrage a profité d’un remarquable succès dans les siècles suivants ayant été réimprimé à plusieurs reprises. Dans cet ouvrage les savoirs magiques et divinatoires sont assimilés à la rationalité d’un système théologique et philosophique. L’objectif de ma recherche était de déchiffrer l’opération culturelle de Steuco afin de mieux cerner les processus de (ré)constitution des savoirs anciens dans un contexte culturel, politique et social foncièrement différent. Le thème de la divination ancienne a bénéficié d’une extraordinaire fortune à la Renaissance. Elle émerge dans les traductions latines des sources grecques concernant les oracles comme par exemple celle de la Praeparatio evangelica d’Eusèbe (traduit en 1450 par Georges de Trébizonde et révisée en 1470 par Antoni Cornazzano) ou celle de l’ouvrage de Plutarque De defectu oraculorum (traduit par Adrien Turnèbe en 1556). On remarque aussi la publication des miscellanées recueillant du matériel oraculaire ancien, comme celle d’Alessandro Alessandri (Genialium dierum libri sex, Rome 1522 : Basel 1542) et de Ludovicus Caelius Rhodiginus, de son vrai nom Ludovico Ricchieri, Lectionum antiquorum libri XXX (Basel 1542). -

The seventh centenary of the birth of Francesco Petrarca (2004), as often happens on the occasion of similar events, has brought the name of the honoree to the attention of both scholars and the wider public. Unlike a hundred years ago, there was fortunately no thought of making a new monu- ment in his honor or a pilgrimage to the house and tomb of the poet, but as has already happened more than one time in the past, the celebrations were appropriate to the times. We have the inevitable but fruitless polemics against the slowness of the Edizione Nazionale delle Opere di Francesco Petrarca, born on the occasion of the preceding centenary of the poet’s birth (1904). And yet with the festivities now concluded, if we sort through the initiatives and writings that have appeared or been announced on Petrarca and his circle, the balance on the whole is positive. -
An English Translation of Agostino Steuco's De Aqua Virgine in Urbem
AN ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF AGOSTINO STEUCO’S DE AQUA VIRGINE IN URBEM REVOCANDA (LYON: GRYPHIUS, 1547) [ON BRINGING BACK THE ACQUA VERGINE TO ROME] Chiara Bariviera* and Pamela O. Long** Introduction Agostino Steuco (1496-1549) was appointed librarian of the Vatican library in Rome by Pope Paul III Farnese in 1538, and served in that capacity until his death in 1549. A learned theologian and humanist, early in his career he wrote polemical tracts against the Protestants, as well as biblical commentaries, but when he arrived in Rome in 1535 he turned to problems of urban renewal and hydraulic engineering. As Ronald Delph has shown, he began thinking about the city as a whole and how it could be transformed to better reflect the glory of the popes and the Catholic Church. He adopted the humanist view that prevailed in Rome in the 1530s and 1540s—that the popes were the legitimate heirs of the Roman imperium and should rightly work to return the city to its ancient splendor. The ideologies of renovatio imperii and renovatio Romae guided Stueco’s writings. In a series of small tracts he proposed that the Tiber River between Rome and Perugia be widened and deepened to allow commercial river traffic from Gubbio (his native city) into Rome, traffic that at the time was severely curtailed by sandbars and other obstacles in the river. He also suggested that within the city itself great avenues be constructed from the city’s second river harbor, the Porto di Ripetta, to the Porta Flaminia (the gate at Piazza del Popolo) and from there to the Capitoline. -

Newton Rayzor Chair in Philosophy and Religious Thought, Chair of the Department of Religious Studies HOUSTON, TEXAS MAY2012 Sacramental Magic and Animate Statues in Edmund Spenser, William Shakespeare, and John Milton Jill Renee Delsigne ABSTRACT "Sacramental Magic" explores the animate statue in early modem romance as an emblem of the potential spiritually transformative power of objects. The tendency of New Historicism to "empty out" theology from Catholicism overlooks the continued power of sacred objects in Reformation literature. My dissertation joins the recent tum to religion in early modem studies-Catholic doctrine and religious experience explain the startling presence of benevolent animate statues in Spenser, Shakespeare, and Milton; one would expect these statues to be empty idols, but instead they animate, revealing a real presence of the divine. I first investigate Spenser's Egyptian lexicon for the Catholic veneration of sacred images in the Temple of Isis in the Faerie Queene. Embedding Britomart's dream vision of an English empire in Egyptian mythology creates a translatio imperii from Egypt to Rome to England, transferring not only political but also religious power. The Isis statue's transformation ofBritomart bears striking textual and visual correlations to John Dee's hermetic Monas Hieroglyphica. For Shakespeare, ermetic magic emblematizes the sacrament of penance. Shakespeare's claim "to make men glorious" suggests that Pericles transforms its audience by effecting, not merely signifying, grace. -

Long** Courtesy Google Books THE WATERS OF ROME: NUMBER 11, MAY 2020 1 Introduction Luca Peto (1512-1581) was a Roman-born patrician, jurist, and hardworking magistrate who was active in the affairs of Rome and the Roman city government (the Capitoline Council) for most of his adult life. This is an English translation of Peto’s tract on the repair of the Acqua Vergine in Rome. The tract was published in Latin in 1570 shortly after a major repair of the aqueduct had been completed. Peto studied law at the University of Bologna between 1531 and 1537, where he heard the lectures of Ugo Boncompagni who in 1572 would become Pope Gregory XIII. He served as a member of the Capitoline Council of Rome sixteen times. -

Signature:………………………………………………………………………….. 1 Delia Georgiana Hedesan Abstract Today, the Flemish physician, alchemist and philosopher Jan Baptista Van Helmont (1579-1644) is mostly remembered as one of the founders of modern chemistry and medicine. However, Van Helmont saw himself rather differently: he firmly believed he had been called to articulate a ‘Christian Philosophy’ that would bring together Christian thought and natural philosophy in a harmonious synthesis. His ‘Christian Philosophy’ would be purged of the Aristotelian ‘heathenism’ he felt Scholasticism had been tainted with. Instead, it would convey a unitary view of God, Nature and Man that was in accord with Christian doctrine. The main purpose of this thesis is to understand how Van Helmont attempted to construct this new Christian Philosophy. The thesis will argue that the inspiration for this project lay in the medical alchemy developed by Theophrastus Paracelsus (1493- 1541) following medieval precedents. Paracelsus and many of his followers expressed the view that alchemy can act as the Christian key to Nature, and therefore an alliance of alchemical philosophy and Christianity was not only possible, but natural.
