Der radikale Evangelikalismus hat mir die Augen dafür geöffnet, dass es die Aufgabe der Kirche ist, einer geteilten Welt den ganzen Christus zu bringen. In den Jahren, in denen ich mich durch Berge von Literatur arbeitete, hat sich im Leben von mir und meiner Frau eine Wandlung hin zu einem radikalen Standpunkt vollzogen. Daraus ist eine ethische Lebensweise entstanden, die in direktem Zusammen- hang mit den Nöten der Welt steht. Die radikalen Theologen haben mein Herz gewonnen. Ich gestehe freimütig: Ich bin einer von ihnen geworden. Mein Dank gilt in erster Linie meinem Herrn, Jesus Christus, an den ich glaube und dem ich täglich nachfolge. Ich bin dankbar, dass mir das Vorrecht gewährt wurde, mich so intensiv mit diesem wichti- gen Thema auseinander zu setzen. Zur Missionstheologie der radikalen Evangelikalen iii DEUTSCHE ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt die geschichtlichen und theologischen Grundlinien des radikalen Evangelikalismus und stellt ihn in den Kontext ähnlicher und ihn beeinflussender Theologien. Der radikale Evangelikalismus integriert Erkenntnisse verschiedener theologischer Ansätze in eine evan- gelikale Grundkonzeption. Die radikale Theologie vermag durch ihre kontextuelle Prägung die Ein- seitigkeiten der europäischen evangelikalen Theologie zu überwinden, bleibt aber genuin evangelikal. Sie ist in der Lage, die Sterilität der akademischen Theologie und die dualistische Geschichtsschau, die weiten Teilen der evangelikalen Bewegung eigen ist, durch eine konsequente Weltzugewandtheit zu durchbrechen. Damit erweist sie sich als eine höchst relevante Theologie für die Nöte einer geteil- ten Welt. Die Arbeit entfaltet sich in drei wesentlichen Schritten. Zunächst wird vom Weltevangelisa- tionskongress in Lausanne 1974 her der geschichtliche Werdegang des radikalen Evangelikalismus nachgezeichnet. Dann erfolgt in einem ausführlichen Teil eine Darstellung der Theologie des radika- len Evangelikalismus an Hand ausgewählter Themen. Schiesslich wird die soziale Aktion der radika- len Evangelikalen dargestellt und aufgezeigt, dass die energische Theologie der Radikalen im Grunde genommen zur Tat drängende Spiritualität ist. Zur Missionstheologie der radikalen Evangelikalen iv ENGLISH ABSTRACT The present work deals with the historical and theological foundations of radical evangelicalism and places it within the context of theologies which influenced it and are similar to it. Radical evangelica- lism integrates insights from various theological roots into a evangelical basal concept. Radical theo- logy succeeded, through its contextual outworking, in overcoming the narrow focus of European e- vangelical theology and yet it remains genuinely evangelical. It is in the position of breaking through the sterility of academic theology and the dualistic worldview which is peculiar to wide parts of the evangelical movement by a world view that is turned towards the world. Thus it is proving itself to be a highly relevant theology for the needs of a divided world. The work develops in three steps. First of all the historical development of radical evangelicalism will be traced, from its beginning at the Cong- ress for world evangelism in Lausanne in 1974 to the present day. Thus it will become clear that in the 30 years since Lausanne radical theology has entered the mainstream of evangelicalism. There follows in a detailed section a setting out of the theology of radical evangelicalism by means of several chosen themes. It will deal with radical hermeneutics, eschatology, salvation, the meaning of mission and evangelism and the relationship between Gospel and culture. Finally the social action of radical evan- gelicalism will be set out and it will be demonstrated that its energetic theology is at its basic level in fact a driving sprituality. Es wird aufgezeigt, dass der radikale Evangelikalismus eine evangelikale Grundkonzeption mit Elementen des Anabaptismus, des Social Gospel, der Befreiungstheologie und der Theologien im Umfeld des Öku- menischen Rates der Kirchen bereichert. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die radikale Theologie genuin e- vangelikal ist, die Einseitigkeiten der westlichen evangelikalen Theologie aber zu überwinden vermag. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit ist den Beiträgen radikaler Nord- und Lateinamerikaner gewidmet, da diese den radikalen Evangelikalismus wesentlich geprägt haben. Ziel ist es, den radikalen Evangelikalismus darzustellen, kritisch zu würdigen und für die europäische evangelikale Szene fruchtbar zu machen. Der erste Teil nennt die Quellen, aus denen sich die radikale Theologie speist. Der zweite Teil zeichnet den geschichtlichen Werdegang des radikalen Evangelika- lismus nach. Es wird nachgewiesen, dass der radikale Evangelikalismus in den dreissig Jahren seines Bestehens zu einem bestimmenden Faktor in der weltweiten evangelikalen Bewegung geworden ist. Der dritte Teil stellt die Grundzüge der radikalen Theologie mittels ausgewählter Themen dar. Er zeigt auf, dass die Radikalen die evangelikale Bewegung mit einer transformatorischen Missionstheorie konfrontiert haben, die relevant für die drängenden Probleme der Gegenwart ist.

(SAM) BERRY Christians in Science: Looking Back – and Forward Christians in Science had its origins in 1944 in a small gathering of mainly postgraduate students in Cambridge. This group became the nucleus of the Research Scientists’ Christian Fellowship (which changed its name in 1988 to Christians in Science). The RSCF was originally a graduate section of the Inter-Varsity Fellowship (now the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship), but is now an independent charity and limited company, albeit still retaining close links with UCCF. We review the seventy year history of CiS and its contributions to the maturing discussions in the faith-science area; we see a positive and developing role for the organisation.     ABSTRACT Reclaiming Peace: Evangelical Scientists and Evolution After World War II Christopher M. Rios, Ph.D. Advisor: William L. Pitts, Jr., Ph.D. This dissertation argues that during the same period in which antievolutionism became a movement within American evangelicalism, two key groups of evangelical scientists attempted to initiate a countervailing trend. The American Scientific Affiliation was founded in 1941 at the encouragement of William Houghton, president of Moody Bible Institute. The Research Scientists‘ Christian Fellowship was started in London in 1944 as one of the graduate fellowship groups of Inter-Varsity Fellowship. Both organizations were established out of concern for the apparent threat stemming from contemporary science and with a desire to demonstrate the compatibility of Christian faith and science. Yet the assumptions of the respective founders and the context within which the organizations developed were notably different. At the start, the Americans assumed that reconciliation between the Bible and evolution required the latter to be proven untrue. The British never doubted the validity of evolutionary theory and were convinced from the beginning that conflict stemmed not from the teachings of science or the Bible, but from the perspectives and biases with which one approached the issues. Nevertheless, by the mid 1980s these groups became more similar than they were different. As the ASA gradually accepted evolution and developed convictions similar to those of their British counterpart, the RSCF began to experience antievolutionary resistance with greater force. To set the stage for these developments, this study begins with a short introduction to the issues and brief examination of current historiographical trends.

The cultural gap between the ancient world and our secular technological world continues to grow. From the standpoint of a Christian caught in poverty, social injustice and political oppression, commentaries on the Bible written by scholars living in an academic atmosphere of middle and upper class society often seem flat and barely relevant. They fail to deal with what Hans-Georg Gadamer calls the central problem of hermeneutics, the problem of application. While we have good reasons to seriously question the new hermeneutic of Bultmann and his successors in their use of the dialectical method and the existentialism that rejects the concept of propositional revelation, the new hermeneutic does seek to uncover the hidden and unexamined presuppositions with which all of us come to the Scriptures.

Birks and its influence. Submitted to the University of Wales through the department of Religious and Theological Studies in the University of Wales College, Cardiff for the degree of M.Phil. By RAYMOND GWYN BROMHAM, 2000 172 SUMMARY The central purpose of this study is an assessment of the development of the Christian doctrine of eternal punishment from the early Victorian age to the present day. This has been done with a view to examining any drift from the traditional view, noting in particular how far this movement away from orthodoxy has been part of the thinking of those of an evangelical persuasion. The growth of other views such as universalism and conditional immortality (annihilationism) is traced, the latter being discovered as the increasingly more acceptable alternative for evangelical Christians than the conventional teaching of eternal conscious suffering for those believed to be finally rejected. Of the many nineteenth-century figures involved in this debate, T. R. Birks has been selected for closer examination, because of the somewhat unique character of his ideas on this doctrine and because of their disturbing impact on the Evangelical Alliance of his day. Similarly, the assessment of twentieth-century developments has focused on Henri Blocher, who, like Birks, has been noted for the rare view that those ultimately lost will acquiesce, despite their eternal suffering, in the righteousness of God, their judge. However, in the conclusion, one’s findings incline to conditional immortality as the more acceptable alternative view of eternal punishment, especially in the context of biblical teaching, theodicy and the promotion of the gospel.

As well as his autobiography and biography, he had become the object of researchers before his death 1 In addition, the bibliography at CMS shows him to have written thirty books and many articles. What follows has been prompted by an invitation to lecture on Max's influence on British missiology and focuses on three areas: ftrst, the special place in the Anglican Evangelical tradition which Max occupied, a subject of importance in current debates and of special interest to the readership of Anvit 'secondly, an analysis of Max's understanding of history and its importance for contemporary Christian thought and life, where a synthesis of his widely scattered insights may be of value; thirdly, the problem which exercised him for the closing period of his life, how to express the distinctiveness or uniqueness of Christ in relation to modern religious pluralism. Placing .the Tradition Space does not permit justiftcation for all the historical generalizations which follow, although I have tried to provide at least some substantiation in my history of St John's College, Durham. 2 Anglican Evangelicalism had faced a critical period in the early 1920' s. At the time of the CMS-BCMS divide in 1922 Max (b. 190"4) was eighteen, Stephen Neill (b. 1900) twenty-two. Max's father had died in 1920 while in the employ of the CMS and Max was only dimly aware of the ructions. In Max's Cambridge of1923-26, it was still possi:ble to be a fully committed member of the CICCU/IVF (Max was a college representative) and a member of the missionary branch of the SCM, the SVMU,3 without great conflict of loyalties.

The sadness was that there were two groups with whom it seemed at the time impossible to have any genuine dialogue. The first was Moral Re-armament. Enough to say here that 'absolute honesty' was not the most notable characteristic of the reaction from that quarter; and reaction it was, in every sense of the word, rather than response. The other group were the conservative evangelicals, with whom I had always had most amicable personal relationships, and still have. But the Lord had evidently stopped their ears from hearing or wanting to hear the issues involved. I remember remon­ strating with a most charming and Christian vicar (who happened to be of this stripe), asking him how he thought that I could possibly have made the statement which he had joined in decrying, I think in a letter in The Times, without ever stopping to check if I had. They just didn't seem to want to know-and were only too ready to believe the worst. In fact the only real dialogue I can remember having was one with John Stott, Oliver Barclay and others kindly set up by my friend Norman Anderson. The contrast with the Roman Catholics was very notable. They had started just as far back-not least on 'the new morality' !-but fast became my most creative ecumenical contacts and perceptive review­ ers.

[ISBN - 978-1843839118, £60] Evangelicals in the Church of England are often remarkably confused and ignorant about their recent evangelical past and the wider church knows even less about who we are and where we come from as evangelicals despite our growing significance at every level of the church. Often as evangelicals we tell each other a story which fits our particular form of evangelicalism and fails to recognize the complexity and diversity. This volume, the fruit of a conference at Wycliffe Hall, is a wonderful (if sadly expensive) resource which ably rectifies such failings. After a fascinating introductory essay by the editors it presents ten papers from scholarly experts who both distil their previous work and offer new insights and material. Evangelicalism and the Church of England: Identities and Contexts In the book’s opening chapter Atherstone and Maiden offer a masterclass overview of Anglican Evangelicalism in the last century and the different maps and taxonomies by which it has been understood in scholarship and popular thinking. They note an offering from 1915 which distinguished Traditional, Protestant, Evangelistic and Liberal evangelicals. The latter had four further sub-divisions (Ritualistic, Philosophic, Social Reforming and Student Movement) but was itself swiftly rejected as genuinely evangelical by others. This sort of complex delineation was widely simplified into conservative vs liberal as a basic division for understanding at least the two decades either side of the war (Oliver Barclay’s account being the classic example).
