Over the last thirty years of relentless efforts to make this happen, we have embraced new grounds and opened up new horizons to facilitate the disadvantaged and vulnerable people to bring meaningful and lasting changes in their lives. During this long span, we have adapted with the changing situation and provided the most time-bound effective services especially to the poor and disadvantaged people. Taking into account the government development policies, we are currently implementing a considerable number of projects and programs including micro-finance program through a community focused and people centered approach to accomplish government’s development agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN as a whole.

J. Soil Nature 8(3), 14-20. The purpose of this study is to identify the types of natural disaster and their management in Joypurhat Sadar Upazila. The data was collected from December 2013 to February 2014. A survey was conducted with a sample of 1200 households. A structured questionnaire was used for the purpose of data collection through a two-stage cluster sampling design. In addition, the qualitative data collection methods for this study include the review of various documents of World Vision, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD).

Shanjida Sultana2 1,2Institute of Mining, Mineralogy and Metallurgy (IMMM), Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR), Joypurhat-5900, Bangladesh ([email protected], [email protected]) Abstract-The present work assessed the heavy metal the monsoonal rains. Due to poor technology and the improper contamination of agricultural field around two selected brick burning of coal and wood produces a lot of pollutants during kilns, where brick kiln is in the center of agricultural land using the brick production, among them CO2, CO, SO2 and other two soil pollution indices such as geo accumulation index greenhouse gases are the most common ones [4]. Tectonically the area lies in the southern slope of Rangpur saddle within the stable Precambrian platform. The investigation work carried out by an exploratory drilling operation with the help of wire line drilling rig. Core samples were collected and subsequently analyzed during the drilling activity. Three limestone layers have been encountered at different depth of this drilling hole which is in between 450 meter to 530 meter below the surface. This limestone is light grey in colour, fossiliferous, sandy in nature, moderately hard and compacted.

Abdullah-Al-Fuad Reg no. 111 Session: 2011-2012 Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Philosophy June 2016 Department of Sociology University of Dhaka Dhaka University Institutional Repository DEDICATION To my parents and sister Dhaka University Institutional Repository Abstract As homicide is one of the most comparable and accurate indicators for measuring violence, the aim of this study is to improve understanding of criminal violence by providing a wealth of information about where homicide occurs and what is the current nature and trend, what are the socio-demographic characteristics of homicide offender and its victim, about who is most at risk, why they are at risk, what are the relationship between victim and offender and exactly how their lives are taken from them. Additionally, homicide patterns over time shed light on regional differences, especially when looking at long-term trends. The connection between violence, security and development, within the broader context of the rule of law, is an important factor to be considered. Since its impact goes beyond the loss of human life and can create a climate of fear and uncertainty, intentional homicide (and violent crime) is a threat to the population. Homicide data can therefore play an important role in monitoring security and justice.

Groundwater zoning is very important, especially for irrigation project as well as drinking needs. So, the present study aims to assess the zoning of groundwater at the Joypurhat district located in the north-west region of Bangladesh. MIKE SHE modelling tool has been used for this study. A groundwater flow model has been developed with calibrating for the period of 2001 to 2006 and validating for 1995 to 2000. As Hand Tube Well (HTW) and Shallow Tube Well (STW) operate under suction mode and they can operate with full efficiency when groundwater table remains within 6m from ground surface, this depth has been considered as the safe yield criteria. Groundwater zoning has been done based on the safe yield criteria. At the end of April groundwater level goes below 6m from the ground surface in Kali, Khetlal, Akkelpur and Panchbibi upazila.

Since 2007, the food, fuel and financial crises throughout the world have caused enormous suffering to marginal people living in poverty who are unable to maintain decent living standards. While media reports provided enough evidence of such suffering, few systematic longitudinal studies have been conducted to help understand the intricacies of how people experience difficulties in maintaining their lifestyles and cope in different ways in an era of food-price volatility. The objectives of the research is to have a clear understanding of the ways in which food-price volatility affects poor people’s lives and how they cope with its effects.
