We first generate insights from a case study in Colorado, finding that social movements and entrepreneurs mutually influence each other. We then demonstrate such mutual influence through a longitudinal quantitative study of the U.S. wind energy sector which also finds that the formation of these specialist social movement organizations has important repercussions on the types of institutions that emerge and the visibility and subsequent growth that the industry experiences. 1 THE CO-EVOLUTION OF INDUSTRIES, SOCIAL MOVEMENTS, AND INSTITUTIONS: THE CASE OF WIND POWER The process of industry emergence and change has often been described as an evolutionary process in which firms generate new variations of processes and products, and those which fit the demands of the environment are selected and retained (Aldrich, 1999; Hannan & Freeman, 1977; Nelson & Winter, 1982; Van de Ven & Poole, 1995). -

The project was led by Dr. Willett Kempton, who knew of the coming need for offshore wind ports, and thought analysis of specific sites would help industry and investors to evaluate options on the eastern seaboard. The sector is fast growing, with states signing power purchase contracts for offshore wind power warranting investment in infrastructure to support that construction. This report is a feasibility analysis of two sites for an offshore wind marshalling port in the US Northeast.
