A MODERN FAMILY: THE PERFORMANCE OF “FAMILY” AND FAMILIALISM IN CONTEMPORARY TELEVISION SERIES by Jennifer M. Fogel A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Communication) in The University of Michigan 2012 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Amanda D. Lotz, Chair Professor Susan J. Douglas Professor Regina Morantz-Sanchez Associate Professor Bambi L. Haggins, Arizona State University © Jennifer M. Fogel 2012 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I owe my deepest gratitude to the members of my dissertation committee – Dr. Susan J. Douglas, Dr. Bambi L. Haggins, and Dr. Regina Morantz-Sanchez, who each contributed their time, expertise, encouragement, and comments throughout this entire process. These women who have mentored and guided me for a number of years have my utmost respect for the work they continue to contribute to our field. I owe my deepest gratitude to my advisor Dr. Amanda D. Lotz, who patiently refused to accept anything but my best work, motivated me to be a better teacher and academic, praised my successes, and will forever remain a friend and mentor. Without her constructive criticism, brainstorming sessions, and matching appreciation for good television, I would have been lost to the wolves of academia. One does not make a journey like this alone, and it would be remiss of me not to express my humble thanks to my parents and sister, without whom seven long and lonely years would not have passed by so quickly. They were both my inspiration and staunchest supporters. Without their tireless encouragement, laughter, and nurturing this dissertation would not have been possible.

Much of the extant research on predicting feedback-seeking behavior of employees relates to job-oriented variables such as motives, goal orientation, attitudes toward feedback, role ambiguity, and the source of the feedback. The present study incorporated yet unstudied, important variables from the Social Psychology literature which could impact feedback- seeking behaviors in the workplace: an employee’s level of both explicit and

Thinking Space: Mathuria 262 Homebound: Reflections on Spatial Difference as a Suburban Child Sunjay Mathuria Concordia University [email protected] _____________________________________ As many of us are now homebound and primarily living virtually, I am reminded of how being at home as a child prompted me to read texts (television and novels) spatially and become more cognizant of spatial differences and injustice. I learned how to read and reflect on my surroundings without leaving the house. Being a first and second generation Canadian child living in a suburban landscape presents unique challenges and opportunities in relation to developing and expressing spatial practices. When coupled with race, gender, class and mobility, the experiences of Canadian children in the suburbs can vary immensely. In my case, I felt largely confined to our home, and in this piece, I will discuss how, as a child, I approached Canadian youth television and young adult historical fiction as spatial texts, which enabled me to reflect on my own relationship with place. Television and literary texts offer those who are spatially limited or less mobile (such as suburban children) to reflect on their own spatial limitations and privileges, conceptualize spatial injustice and connect with other marginalized identities. I think we can even extend these reflections to the current coronavirus pandemic that has gripped our geographical realities. The Image of the Suburb When I was 10 years old, I was in a Toronto-area suburb, living in a large subdivision of meandering crescents, winding roads, looping streets, and cul-de-sacs. Childhood experiences shape how we think about community, space and geography.

STEYER and AMY GUGGENHEIM SHENKAN Decades of research, outlined in this report, demonstrate the power of media to shape how children learn about gender, including how boys and girls look, think, and behave. Depictions of gender roles in the media affect kids at all stages of their development, from preschool all the way through high school and beyond. These media messages shape our children’s sense of self, of their and others’ value, of how relationships should work, and of career aspirations.

REPORT FOR ACTION Intention to Designate under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, Alterations to a Heritage Property and Authority to Enter into a Heritage Easement Agreement - 685 Queen Street East Date: April 21, 2021 To: Toronto Preservation Board Toronto and East York Community Council From: Senior Manager, Heritage Planning, Urban Design, City Planning Wards: Toronto-Danforth - Ward 14 SUMMARY This report recommends that City Council state its intention to designate the listed heritage property at 685 Queen Street East under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, approve the alterations proposed for the heritage property in connection with a proposed development of the subject property and grant authority to enter into a Heritage Easement Agreement for the subject property. Located on the south side of Queen Street East between the East Don Roadway and Broadview Avenue, the property at 685 Queen Street East, contains the Dr. John B. Fraser office and residence. Constructed in 1903-4, the two-and-a-half storey, brick- clad, hipped and gable-roofed, house-form building is an early example of the medical office-residence typology and is a fine blend of the Richardsonian Romanesque and Edwardian Classical styles. In 1938, the property was converted to contain six apartments and in 1976 it became part of the Riverdale Co-operative Housing Inc. and now provides nine affordable rental housing units. The property contributes architecturally as well as typologically to the eclectic mix of late-19th and early-20th century commercial and residential properties which characterize the historic Queen Street East streetscape.

It examines properties on First Avenue east of DeGrassi Street, and on West and Tiverton Avenues. It recommends the creation of a Heritage Conservation District (HCD) under Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act to assist residents in protecting and restoring the heritage character and fabric within those boundaries. It is expected that on completion of this study, a second study will be undertaken for the remainder of First Avenue from De Grassi Street to Broadview Avenue and adjacent streets. A summary of the importance of these three streets is set out at the beginning of the Heritage Character Statement: “The significance of these streets lies in the large number of original buildings, with the majority of their heritage attributes present or capable of being restored. The streets were some of the earliest developed on the east side of the Don River, and reflect the period of development which stretched from the mid 1880s to the First World War. The houses are a mixture of the “Bay-n-Gable” style, Second Empire Row houses, and examples of modest scaled Edwardian Four Square.

  • Legislative Committee on Bill C-32/Comite Législatif Chargé Du Projet De Loi C-32 Subject: Bill C32: Television Production and Technology in Canada
From: Stephen Stohn Sent: January 30, 2011 9:30 AM To: ~Legislative Committee on Bill C-32/Comite législatif chargé du projet de loi C-32 Subject: Bill C32: Television production and technology in Canada Honourable Committee Members: As a Canadian television industry producer, I've experienced firsthand the opportunities and challenges of the digital age and greatly support the current effort to update our copyright laws. At Degrassi: The Next Generation, engaging our fans and encouraging them to become ambassadors for the show, is our number one priority. We love to see our fans express themselves about the themes we develop in the show, and technology provides the tools to make this possible. There comes a point, however, when technology is used to go one step too far. At Degrassi we draw the line at the pirating of episodes before they go to air and the use of our content or our fans' content by other people in order to profit at our collective expense. When unauthorized people profit from the use of Degrassi content, it crosses the line of fairness and affects our ability to produce a quality series—one which has become a prized cultural product and job creator in Canada. Television production can only flourish and provide opportunities to actors, producers and the scores of others working in the field, if we have a set of rules that protects original creators. Such laws, that are up-to-date with today's digital environment, are imperative to helping us protect our creative content from those who would misuse technology.
