More About The Bowood Estate Home of The Marquis and Marchioness of Lansdowne
Bowood has been the Lansdowne family home since 1754. After the Second World War, the Estate’s future hung in the balance. The “Big House” was derelict and full of dry rot. Most of the Estate cottages were unmodernised. The 8th Marquis took the courageous decision to demolish the “Big House” leaving what visitors see today - a beautifully proportioned Georgian house, in the centre of “the most beautiful park in England”. In 1975 his son, the present Marquis, opened the house and grounds to the public. Three years later, he restored the derelict stables and grooms’ quarters to create a sculpture gallery, exhibition rooms, restaurant and shop. Over the past thirty years, a policy of diversification has been assiduously pursued to reflect the changing social and financial landscape. Assets have been harnessed and developed to support and protect the house and oasis which forms Capability Brown’s parkland, and showcase some of his creations such as the superb lake and waterfall . All who work here take great pride in developing and protecting such an outstanding enterprise.

Bowood Golf Course
Driving through the Golden Gates of Bowood's grand entrance, you enter a golfing haven. Set within ‘Capability' Brown's 2000-acre Great Park and the estate of Bowood House and Gardens, lies the championship golf course carefully designed by Dave Thomas, architect of the Belfry. Which has of course hosted the Ryder Cup on a number of occasions. The course is the top championship course of the region and has hosted the European Challenge Tour Championships and many other top events. The course measures 7,317 yards from the championship tees and provides a great day out for both scratch and occasional golfers. The former estate farmhouse, dating from the 18th century, has been lovingly converted into a superb Clubhouse
Working with the natural beauty of majestic rolling parkland, with a wealth of mature trees and lakes, Thomas' brief was to create a course to be enjoyed by all who wished to play. With a range of tees on every hole, the higher handi- capped golfer is not overwhelmed by too difficult a course, yet from the back tees it is still a challenge for tour professionals.
