Internship Program The goal of the WAQY/WLZX/WRSI/WHMP/HITS 94.3 Internship Program is to provide college students with a unique and practical experience in the radio industry. Internships are available for those full-time students who are seeking approved college credit hours. WAQY/WLZX had an intern from June 2013-August 2013. Our intern got the chance to experience a variety of facets of the radio industry including helping with website updates, preparing for station events, taking inventory of promotional items, archiving and inventorying old network programming audio for the production department, shadowing on-air talent, and assisting with various sales tasks. WAQY/WLZX had an intern from February 2013-May 2013. Our intern worked with our Production Director to learn and complete editing assignments, worked with our WLZX PM Drive host to learn and complete interview assignments for broadcast, gathered “man-on-the-street” interview audio which was incorporated in the WLZX afternoon show, observed and trained with WLZX PM Drive host during the 2pm to 7pm broadcast, observed and trained with promotions team, and attended several on-site promotions. WAQY/WLZX had an intern for the 2012 Winter Semester. Our intern primarily worked with our WAQY Morning Show on-air staff assisting with production (commercials sweepers etc) and also solicited show guests. WRSI/WHMP/Hits 94.3 had two interns, one from January-June 2013 and the second from June-September 2013 (UMASS Amherst). Our interns had the opportunity to upload podcasts to websites, download shows for broadcast from outside websites and CDs, learned to operate on-air boards, learned production and editing of radio commercials, assisted News Director in composing stories, accompanied staff on remotes/appearances, and assisted with various office tasks. Scholarship Programs Connecticut School of Broadcasting WAQY/WLZX/WRSI/WHMP participated in the Connecticut School of Broadcasting Scholarship Program which provides scholarships to high school students who are interested in pursuing a career in the broadcasting industry. We ran radio advertisements in exchange for contributions to student scholarships. E. Outreach Activities (Continued) Scholarship Programs (Continued) University of Massachusetts Amherst In April 2013, WRSI/WHMP/HITS 94.3 contributed to the University of Massachusetts Amherst College of Social & Behavioral Sciences Scholarships. In return, they provided us with an intern from June-September 2013. Massachusetts Broadcasters Association In June 2013, WAQY/WLZX/WRSI/WHMP/HITS 94.3 completed its fourth and final component of the 2013-2014 MBA Student Broadcaster Scholarship Program. The applications were ranked with our top fifteen selections. We also ran radio advertisements to inform the public of the scholarship program and how to apply. In April 2012, WAQY/WLZX/WRSI/WHMP/HITS 94.3 completed its fourth and final component of the 2012-2013 MBA Student Broadcaster Scholarship Program. The applications were ranked with our top ten selections for 10 $2000 scholarships and 1 $3000 Al Sprague Memorial scholarship. We also ran radio advertisements to inform the public of the scholarship program and how to apply. EEO Training for Management On May 30th, 2013 Luke Donahue (Business Manager) attended the 2013 Webinar, "Making it Work: A Broadcaster's Guide to the FCC's EEO Rule," with Scott Flick and Paul Cicelski of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, LLP sponsored by the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association. Job Fair WAQY/WLZX/WRSI/WHMP/HITS 94.3 and sister stations WHAI/WPVQ hosted a Job Fair on September 18, 2013 at WRSI/WHMP/Hits 94.3 located at 15 Hampton Avenue in Northampton, Massachusetts. Massachusetts Broadcasters Association Brochures detailing "Careers in Radio Broadcasting" were handed out and resumes were collected for current positions. Management from each radio cluster was in attendance. General Outreach WAQY/WLZX/WRSI/WHMP/Hits 94.3 routinely contact various community organizations to notify them of job opportunities at the radio stations through email, fax, and mail and through on-air broadcasts informing them to contact [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected] to be included in future distributions. Other Activities Provided copies of Massachusetts Broadcasters Association "Careers in Radio Broadcasting" for distribution at WAQY & WLZX Station Events held Thursdays & Fridays at local establishments. Copies are also available at the front reception desk at station offices. Provided link on station job openings webpages to Massachusetts Broadcasters Association for more information on jobs in the broadcasting industry. Continually analyze recruitment program on an ongoing basis and regularly update internal database to achieve broad outreach to potential applicants. WAQY/WLZX assisted in promoting the Massachusetts Broadcasters' Association Job Fair on November 5, 2013 at Curry College in Milton, MA by running radio ads and posting on our job openings websites. On November 11, 2013, a local Cub Scout Troop visited WAQY/WLZX to assist with Scouting Communication requirements. They received a tour of our facility from two of our employees and were informed of what careers are available in Radio Broadcasting (copies of the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association "Careers in Radio Broadcasting" were also handed out). They also toured our on-air production booths and had question/answer sessions with various departments. This year, as always, the airstaff here at WRSI/WHMP/Hits 94.3 conducted tours of our stations for a number of community groups. Among them were: Northampton Girls Scouts – tour conducted by Monte Belmonte Hartsbrook School – tour by Joan Holliday Hampshire Educational Collaborative – tour by Monte Berkshire Hills Music Academy – tour by Steve Truempy We feel that showing students and members of the community at large what we do here is important, and helps them understand all the ways we are partners with them here in the Valley. They also see how exciting and vibrant the world of radio is, and what careers are available in this profession. We plan continue to invite the community into Northampton Radio in the coming year as part of our community outreach efforts.
