Hip resurfacing is an alternative to total hip replacement and removes less bone. This is often especially important for younger, more active patients.

Hip arthroscopy is performed with tiny instruments that are inserted through very small incisions. Hip arthroscopy is an outpatient procedure and in most cases patients go home the very same day.

Expertise in procedures. All hip and knee replacement procedures are technically demanding, but minimally invasive techniques require special dexterity and skill. Infection control. To reduce the risk of infection, patients are given antibiotics prior to and after surgery. Additionally, the Evarts Joint Center's dedicated surgical suites are outfitted with ultra- clean air systems including a state-of-the art air flow and helmet exhaust systems for operating room personnel. We employ meticulous operating room discipline for skin preparation, draping, and instrument preparation.

Key Quality Measures

Number of joint replacements performed. Studies have shown that there is a relationship between the number of joint replacement procedures performed at a hospital and quality outcomes. Since 2004, our surgeons have performed thousands of knee and hip replacements.

Incision size. The standard incision size for conventional hip surgery has been from 8 to 12 inches. The size of the incision will be determined by the surgeon and the patient’s specific circumstances. Surgeons at the Evarts Joint Center are often able to perform surgery using an incision of 6 inches or less.

Length of stay. In 2010, the average length of stay for elective hip replacement at Highland Hospital was 3.43 days. For knee replacement, our average length of stay was 3.22 days. Our numbers are lower than the average length of stay of similar hospitals reported by the University Health System Consortium.

Prevention of blood clots. Because of the body's normal response to surgery and the reduction in activity that usually follows surgery, blood clots, or thrombus, can be a common complication. At Highland Hospital, treatments, such as blood thinning medications, early mobilization, physical therapy, range-of-motion exercises, elastic stockings, and intermittent pneumatic compression devices are available to patients to help prevent blood clots.
