And that is not only because it was not understood but because it was stigmatised by religion and mainstream heterosexual society. Even today, the term “sodomy” and “catamites” are used in many legal documents and discourses in the USA and these were derived from Biblical texts. The first stirrings of movement on a rational basis to describe same-sex relations started in Europe a little before the region plunged into what are called World War I and World War II. Both were really wars fought by European Nation States and drew in both resources and knowledge from the colonies. Thus Edward Carpenter in England, Magnus Hirschfield in Germany, Havelock Ellis is Austria, all tried their hand at “naming” this phenomenon which was ancient in that they find mention in all human societies across the globe obviously making it a cross=species sexual behaviour. However, as the Upanishads say: “Defining reality or verbalising it – the’Vakas it is called in Sanskrit, took a very long time in secular sciences. -

The nineties saw a consolidation of South Asian activity all across the United States. The second generation (for our purpose defined as the children of immigrants) have now entered college campuses and are largely responsible for this flurry of activity. From the mid-1980s to the present, South Asian women too have been organising separately in women’s groups, mainly around the issue of domestic violence. As this activity continues, it is not surprising that it finds its expression as anthologies of writing – both fiction and nonfiction. -

2. HORTICULTURE AND PLANTATION CROPS Horticulture sector has emerged as one of the important and vibrant part of Indian agriculture in recent years. Its role in the Country’s nutritional security, poverty alleviation and employment generation programme is becoming increasing important. It offers not only a wide range of options to the farmers for crop diversification for making agriculture more profitable through efficient land use, but also provides ample scope for sustaining large number of agro-industries which generate huge employment opportunities. Horticulture crops identified as a means of diversification, optimum utilization of natural resources and creating skilled employment for rural masses especially women folk. 1 Keeping pace with increase in demand, area and production under horticultural crops have increased considerably over the years. Horticulture is seen as a source for diversification by the farming community since there is a tremendous scope for increasing their income by adopting latest technologies without affecting the food security. Over the last decade, the area under horticulture grew by about 2.7 per cent per annum and annual production increased by 7.0 per cent. 2.1. Performance of Horticulture Crops in Tamil Nadu at National Level As per the statistics of Government of India 2017, Tamil Nadu is one among the leading Horticultural States in India, contributing 5.88% towards National Horticulture Production and 5.4% in respect of total horticultural crops area at National level. Tamil Nadu accounts for nearly 2 4.8% of the area under fruits and 2.5% of the area under vegetables in the Country. In terms of production, the State’s share is nearly 6.5% in fruits, 3.6% in vegetables and 19% in flowers. -

Jasbir K. Puar This question opens on to others: How are the technologies that are being and developed to combat “terrorism” departures from or transformations of Amit S. Rai older technologies of heteronormativity, white supremacy, and national- ism? In what way do contemporary counterterrorism practices deploy these technologies, and how do these practices and technologies become the quotidian framework through which we are obliged to struggle, sur- vive, and resist? Sexuality is central to the creation of a certain knowledge of terrorism, specifically that branch of strategic analysis that has entered the academic mainstream as “terrorism studies.” This knowledge has a history that ties the image of the modern terrorist to a much older figure, the racial and sexual monsters of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Further, the construction of the pathologized psyche of the terrorist- monster enables the practices of normalization, which in today’s context often means an aggressive heterosexual patriotism. As opposed to initial post–September 11 reactions, which focused narrowly on “the disappearance of women,” we consider the question of gender justice and queer politics through broader frames of reference, all with multiple genealogies—indeed, as we hope to show, gender and sex- uality produce both hypervisible icons and the ghosts that haunt the machines of war. -

Deviant Domesticities and Sexualised Childhoods: Prostitutes, Eunuchs and the Limits of the State Child “Rescue” Mission in Colonial India Jessica Hinchy Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Introduction In the late 1860s and early 1870s, colonial officials in north India argued that the British government had a duty to “rescue” girls and boys who were allegedly kidnapped and condemned to a “life of infamy” by eunuchs and women labelled prostitutes. Colonial officials claimed that prostitutes and eunuchs sexually “corrupted” girls and boys, respectively, and hired them out as child prostitutes. British administrators proposed to register and remove children who resided with prostitutes and eunuchs and to appoint “respectable” guardians. In India, unlike Australia, the removal of children was not a general technique of colonial governance.1 These projects for the removal and reform of children who lived in brothels and with eunuchs were thus somewhat unusual colonial attempts at child rescue.2 The singular English-language colonial category of “eunuch” was internally diverse and encompassed a multiplicity of social roles. The term eunuch could be used to variously encapsulate male-identified and female-identified, emasculated and non-emasculated, socially elite and subaltern, politically powerful and relatively politically insignificant groups. Recent jurisprudence in India indicates the emergence of legal protection for transgender people. Despite legal recognition, the implementation and practical scope of the judicial progression remains to be seen. In order to understand the progress that the courts have made, it is important to reflect on the legal history of gender- variant people in India. This article does so and reveals the influence of colonial laws on the rights, or lack thereof, of gender-variant individuals. INTRODUCTION Late in the afternoon on an early spring day, the Supreme Court of In- dia began hearing the final arguments that would determine the legal status of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in India. Earlier that very week, I told my parents that I was a member of the litigation team - and that I was gay. Without warning, I found arguments from a heated family discussion reverberating in the chambers of a court of law. These dialogues were inevitable: both the ones in the courtroom and the ones with my parents. In 2009, the Indian LGBT community took its first step towards equal sexual citizenship through the Delhi High Court's judgment in the matter of Naz Foundation v. NCT of Delhi and Others' The Bench, comprising then Chief Justice of the High Court Justice A.P. Shah and Justice Muralidhar, crafted a 105-page document that is considered a landmark moment in Indian judicial history. The judgment not only em- powered a historically marginalized community, but it also laid the founda- tion to strengthen other human rights struggles in the country with its ex- pansive reading of constitutional rights. Yet for all the revelry that surrounded the judgment, there was an equally fierce backlash that played out across Indian television screens as advocates for the movement faced off with opponents from religious groups of all faiths and denominations. It was inevitable then, that within two weeks of the decision, an appeal was filed before the Supreme Court of India. -

This timeline cards set focuses on teaching about the evolution of the LGBTQIA+ Rights (movement) through history up until today, covering some key milestones, leading figures, events, legislation and organizations. The cards can be used in history or civic education, or in other non-formal education settings. Where possible, it is advised that educators supplement the cards with local (history) examples. The cards were created using images and information researched online, with sources noted on the back of the cards. The cards are created for exclusively non-profit educational purpose and use, in classrooms or non-formal educational settings. Asexuality is more of a spectrum.
