A DANGEROUS METHOD (2011) Director: David Cronenberg Writers: Christopher Hampton, Christopher Hampton Stars: Michael Fassbender, Keira Knightley, Viggo Mortensen Country: UK | GE | Canada | CH Genres: Biography | Drama | Romance | Thriller Trailer In the early twentieth century, Zurich-based Carl Jung is a follower in the new theories of psychoanalysis of Vienna-based Sigmund Freud, who states that all psychological problems are rooted in sex. Jung uses those theories for the first time as part of his treatment of Sabina Spielrein, a young Russian woman bro- ught to his care. She is obviously troubled despite her assertions that she is not crazy. Jung is able to uncover the reasons for Sa- bina’s psychological problems, she who is an aspiring physician herself. In this latter role, Jung employs her to work in his own research, which often includes him and his wife Emma as test subjects. Jung is eventually able to meet Freud himself, they, ba- sed on their enthusiasm, who develop a friendship driven by the- ir lengthy philosophical discussions on psychoanalysis. Actions by Jung based on his discussions with another patient, a fellow psychoanalyst named Otto Gross, lead to fundamental chan- ges in Jung’s relationships with Freud, Sabina and Emma.

  • The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa
A Theological Examination of Reconciliation Within a Political Context: The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa by The Rev. Suzanne M. Warner Submitted to the Faculty of the School of Theology of the University of the South in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts May 2010 Sewanee Tennessee Approved: Date: 1 “A Theological Examination of Reconciliation Within a Political Context: The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa” by The Rev. Suzanne Warner Thesis is under the direction of the Rev. Dr. Walter Brownridge and Dr. Cynthia Crysdale. ABSTRACT 1. During the past twenty years the world saw the development of the phenomenon of “Truth and Reconciliation Commissions” as an approach to resolve fractures within communities and nations, especially after periods of civil unrest, civil war, and other forms of violence and tension. Two basic questions emerge: What is reconciliation, and how does a society know that reconciliation has been accomplished? 2. Insights of theological ethics can provide a source for examination of the process of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa (TRC). Response to the questions may provide a view of the process to clarify the impact of the TRC on reconciliation in South Africa. 3. The TRC was a political creation, established through negotiations for an end to conflict that extended over decades. To provide insight into complex problems relating to reconciliation, Section II presents a history of the influences in South Africa relevant to apartheid and those conflicts. 4. Section III covers the formation and operation of the TRC, including participation of Christian leadership under Archbishop Desmond Tutu and others.

  • Endgame on MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY Sunday, October 25, 2009 at 9Pm ET on PBS
Peace is possible Endgame On MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY Sunday, October 25, 2009 at 9pm ET on PBS In the mid 1980s, no nation’s future looked as hopeless as South Africa’s. Diehard supporters of the apartheid regime were pitted against a black national liberation movement that was edging toward all-out armed rebellion. But, on the brink of catastrophe, a miracle occurred. Thanks to an improbable mediator, a series of risky and secret talks began. MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY portrays the drama, violence and pathos behind this real-life political thriller on Endgame, the season premiere, airing Sunday, October 25, 2009, from 9 to 11pm ET on PBS (check local listings). Directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point), Endgame’s international cast includes Best Actor Oscar-winner and Emmy-nominated William Hurt (Kiss of the Spider Woman, Damages) as Professor Will Esterhuyse, leader of an unofficial delegation representing white South Africa, and Chiwetel Ejiofor (American Gangster, Kinky Boots) as Thabo Mbeki, who heads a group of exiles from the African National Congress (ANC). Mbeki went on to become the second democratically elected president of South Africa, succeeding Nelson Mandela. Jonny Lee Miller (MASTERPIECE's Emma, Eli Stone, Trainspotting) stars as the facilita- tor who brings these bitter antagonists together, Michael Young, the head of public affairs and communication for Consolidated Goldfields. Although the firm has long benefited from apartheid, Young argues that economic and political chaos will result if the racist system is not dismantled as soon as possible. Derek Jacobi (The Old Curiosity Shop, Gosford Park) plays the chairman of Consolidated Goldfields, Rudolf Agnew, who agrees to fund Young’s quixotic mission.

  • Paula Milne: the Personal As Political with Paula Milne in Conversation, Monday 24 September
12/47 Paula Milne: The Personal As Political With Paula Milne In Conversation, Monday 24 September Friday 27 July - London In September BFI Southbank will host a retrospective of work by one of Britain’s most accomplished screenwriter’s for television Paula Milne. The season highlights will include an onstage event Paula Milne in Conversation during which Milne will discuss the many high points of her career including The Politician’s Wife (1995), and the premiere of her unaired work Thursday 12th (2000), which examines the personal cost of political ambition. In the twelve years since it was produced, Thursday 12th was twice pulled from the air owing to its proximity to an election – the season will offer audiences a unique chance to see a drama which has been kept from television screens for over a decade, precisely because it was too pertinent. Milne’s commitment to highlighting injustice has remained constant, and this season will feature dramas which do not shy away from difficult subjects such as John David (1982), A Sudden Wrench (1982) and Hollow Reed (1996) which focus on disability, female empowerment and gay prejudice respectively. Beginning as a script editor at the BBC, Milne quickly progressed to her first major success Angels (1975), which was one of the first precinct drama series to place women at the centre of the narrative. Her writing skills were further honed by providing scripts for Coronation Street, Z-Cars and Grange Hill. This background in television would stand Milne in good stead when it came to writing the first of her single dramas, A Sudden Wrench (1982).
