Video script Today, ice hockey, or just “hockey”, is played all over the world. This is the Oxford City Stars, an ice hockey team that plays in the English National Ice Hockey League. There are now hockey leagues all over Europe, the U.S., and Australia, but the sport is still most popular in its birthplace: Canada. One reason hockey is so popular is because it's simple. There are six players on each team – three forwards, two defensemen, and the goaltender, who protects the goal. The aim of the game is to score more goals than the other team! But even though ice hockey is a simple game, it’s still very difficult to play. It’s played on an ice rink, so the “puck” slides across the ice very quickly. Players need to have fantastic skills, which means it’s very entertaining for spectators. Teamwork is really important, too, and games are always very competitive. It’s easy to see why winter sports like hockey are popular in Canada, but lots of other sports are played here, too. Another popular sport in Canada is baseball. Baseball is played by two teams. Each team has nine players, and one team “bats” while the other “pitches” and “fields”. The purpose of the sport is to score a home run, when the batter hits the ball and manages to run around all four bases. Baseball is extremely popular in the U.S., which is home to the world’s most famous baseball organization – Major League Baseball. Almost all of the biggest and most successful teams are here – like, for example, the New York Yankees. The U.S. may be the home of baseball, but the sport has a long history in Canada, too. In fact, one of the first ever baseball games was played in Ontario in 1838. In 1992, the Toronto Blue Jays won the biggest trophy in the sport – the World Series. Then they won it again a year later! Today, the Blue Jays are still the only Major League team in the country, but baseball is also enjoyed by many enthusiastic amateurs. Hockey and baseball are two of the most popular sports in North America. But thanks to teams like the Oxford City Stars, people are playing them in lots of other places, too!
