Tel: +55-19-2106-5721. e-mail: [email protected] In this study we investigate the association between facial type and mandibular canal course morphology analysing this in digital panoramic radiographs images. We used 603 digital images from panoramic radiographs. We selected only panoramic radiographs of fully dentate individuals, who had all lower molars bilaterally and with complete root formation. The sample distribution was determined by facial type and sex. The course of the mandibular canal, as seen in the panoramic radiographs, was classified into 3 types, bilaterally. The classification used was: type 1 if the mandibular canal is in contact or is positioned at most 2 mm from the root apex of the three permanent molars; type 2 if the mandibular canal is located halfway between the root apex of the three permanent molars and a half away from the mandibular basis; and type 3 if the mandibular canal is in contact with or approaches, a maximum of 2 mm from the cortical bone of the mandibular basis. -

A literature review was conducted in order to investigate the morphology and effect of hamulus pterygoid fracture in clinical manifestation and its relationships with other orofacial components. A literature search was conducted, using Pubmed and Bireme data bases, and covering the time period 1970 to 2019. The Key words for the research were hamulus pterygoid, pterygoid fracture and hamulus pterygoid fracture, resulting in 440 articles, being 41 initials selected. Among them, just 31 were included in the analysis and 08 of the articles were not available through our library system or were in volumes before our holdings began. The remaining were excluded when they weren’t in English idiom, or when didn’t talk about morphological, functional or damages in the hamulus pterygoid. -

The purpose of the present paper was to review the literature concerning the mandibular canal and inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle anatomical variations related to the implant surgery. Material and Methods: Literature was selected through the search of PubMed, Embase and Cochrane electronic databases. The keywords used for search were mandibular canal, inferior alveolar nerve, and inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle. The search was restricted to English language articles, published from 1973 to November 2009. Additionally, a manual search in the major anatomy, dental implant, prosthetic and periodontal journals and books were performed. Results: In total, 46 literature sources were obtained and morphological aspects and variations of the anatomy related to implant treatment in posterior mandible were presented as two entities: intraosseous mandibular canal and associated inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle. Conclusions: A review of morphological aspects and variations of the anatomy related to mandibular canal and mandibular vital structures are very important especially in implant therapy since inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle exists in different locations and possesses many variations. -

The Coronoid process is the anterior bony projected part of ramus of mandible giving attachment to two important muscles of mastication. The aim of our study was to observe the variation in the size of coronoid process in relation to its side (laterality), shape, age and sex. The material for this study comprised of 160 (320 sides) dry human mandibles from the osteology bank of Anatomy Department, S.C.B Medical College, Cuttack. The age and sex differentiating criteria were detailed in materials and methods. The size of coronoid process was found to be approximately 1.5 mm longer on the right side than on the left side; 0.01 mm longer in males than females and 0.01 mm longer in dentulous than in edentulous. Triangular coronoid process was found to be the longest followed by round and then hook shaped. -

The Simple Tooth: A Review of Feline Skull and Tooth Anatomy Cindy Charlier, DVM, DAVDC Fox Valley Veterinary Dentistry and Surgery Chicago, IL Skull anatomy The skull can be divided into the fused bones of the calvarium, the upper jaw, and the lower jaw. The cranial portion of the calvarium consists of the paired frontal bones, which articulate cranially with the nasal bones and maxillae, and caudally with the parietal bones. The nasal cavity contains an ethmoid bone and is bordered dorsally by the incisive, nasal and frontal bones, laterally by the incisive, maxilla, lacrimal, frontal and palatine bones, ventrally by the incisive, maxilla, and palatine bones and caudally by a single vomer bone which lies ventral to the ethmoid and dorsal to the hard palate. The lateral surface of the frontal bone shapes the dorsomedial and caudal aspect of the orbit. The medial and ventral part of the orbit is completed by articulation of the frontal bone with the lacrimal, ethmoid, maxilla, presphenoid and palatine bones. The zygomatic bone forms the lateral boundary of the orbit. The temporal process of the zygomatic bone articulates with the zygomatic process of the temporal bone, forming the zygomatic arch. Caudal to the frontal bones and forming the caudal portion of the cranial vault are the paired parietal bones, which articulate caudally with the occipital bone. Ventrally, the parietal bone joins the temporal and basisphenoid bones. The upper jaw includes the incisive, maxillary, and palatine bones. The paired incisive bones form approximately one-sixth of the hard palate, and three incisors are rooted in each incisive bone.
