The smallest beetles and the smallest non-parasitic insects belong to the staphylinoid family Ptiliidae. Their adult body length can be as small as 0.325 mm and is generally smaller than 1 mm. Here we address the phylogenetic relationships within the family using formal analyses of adult morphological characters and molecular data, and also a combination of both for the frst time. Strongly supported clades are Ptiliidae + Hydraenidae, Ptiliidae, Ptiliidae excl. Nossidium, Motschulskium and Sindosium, Nanosellini, and a clade comprising Acrotrichis, Smicrus, Nephanes and Baeocrara. A group comprising Actidium, Oligella and Micridium + Ptilium is also likely monophy- letic.

Almost 300 species were collected on fungi and in flight interception traps. Among them, 18 species were recorded from the Western Beskid Mts. for the first time, 41 were new records for the Babia Góra NP, and 16 were from various categories on the Polish Red List of Animals. The first certain record of Bolitochara tecta ASSING, 2014 in Poland is reported. KEY WORDS: beetles, macromycetes, ecology, trophic interactions, Polish Carpathians, UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Introduction Beetles of the Babia Góra massif have been studied for over 150 years. The first study of the Coleoptera of Babia Góra was by ROTTENBERG th (1868), which included data on 102 species. During the 19 century, INTERESTING BEETLES (COLEOPTERA) IN THE BABIA GÓRA NP 213 several other papers including data on beetles from Babia Góra were published: 37 species were recorded from the area by KIESENWETTER (1869), a single species by NOWICKI (1870) and 47 by KOTULA (1873).

  • (Coleoptera: Ptiliidae): Description of New Taxa and Phylogenetic Analysis
Systematic Entomology Systematic Entomology (2009), 34, 113–136 Discheramocephalini, a new pantropical tribe of featherwing beetles (Coleoptera: Ptiliidae): description of new taxa and phylogenetic analysis VASILY V. GREBENNIKOV1,2 1Entomology Research Laboratory, Ottawa Plant Laboratories, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and 2Entomology Group, Institut fu¨ r Spezielle Zoologie und Evolutionbiologie, Friedrich-Schiller-Universita¨ t, Jena, Germany Abstract. Two new genera and eight new species of featherwing beetles (Cole- optera: Ptiliidae) possessing a remarkable horizontal perforation of the mesoven- tral keel are described: Skidmorella vietnamensis sp.n. (Vietnam), S. memorabilis sp.n. (Indonesia), S. serrata sp.n. (Vietnam), Fenestellidium capensis gen. et sp.n. (South Africa, type species), F. kakamegaensis sp.n. (Kenya), Cissidium okuensis sp.n. (Cameroon), Dacrysoma usambarensis gen. et sp.n. (Tanzania, type species) and D. felis sp.n. (Madagascar). A phylogenetic analysis of 24 taxa and 37 parsimony-informative characters supports the hypothesis of a single origin of the mesoventral perforation, thus uniting Discheramocephalus, Skidmorella, Africop- tilium, Fenestellidium, Cissidium and Dacrysoma into a pantropically distributed clade, for which a new tribe Discheramocephalini (type genus Discheramocephalus) is proposed. Identification keys to Discheramocephalini genera and, in some cases, to species are provided. Each new species is illustrated with scanning electron microscopy images. Introduction of such groups. This implies that among small insects there are many new taxa to be discovered and described. The family Ptiliidae comprises beetles with the smallest body This assumption of taxonomic obscurity was correct for length and volume: the length of most species is between 0.6 the Ptiliidae I collected recently in South Africa, Kenya, and 1.2 mm, with a reported minimum of about 0.40 mm Tanzania and Cameroon.

  • Изучение Ассоциативного Обучения Nephanes Titan (Newman, 1834) И Других Перокрылок (Coleoptera: Ptiliidae)

External and internal head structures of species with different body sizes and feeding prefer ences were examined and described in detail. Saprophagous and sporophagous species are compared. The observed features are evaluated with respect to their phylogenetic and functional significance, and their correlation with extreme size reduction. A putative autapomorphy of Staphyliniformia is an unusual extrinsic maxillary muscle, which among ptiliids is only present in the saprophagous species. Synapo morphies of Ptiliidae and their sister group Hydraenidae are a lateral mandibular process forming a unique locking device with a lateral groove of the labrum, and mandibles divided into a main body and a mesal molar part, both connected by a membrane. Extreme body size reduction is a presumptive autapomorphy of Ptiliidae that probably resulted in the following derived features: the loss of cephalic sutures and ridges, a simplified tentorium, and a brain modified in shape and very large in relation to the head size.

Petrov1, Nadejda A. Lapina1, Thomas Engels3, Fritz-Olaf Lehmann3, Ryo Onishi2, Hao Liu4, Alexey A. Polilov1, 5 Flight speed generally correlates positively with animal body size1. Surprisingly, miniature featherwing beetles can fly at speeds and accelerations of insects three times as large2. We show here that this performance results from a previously unknown type of wing motion. Our experiment combines three-dimensional reconstructions of morphology and kinematics in one of the smallest insects, Paratuposa placentis (body length 395 μm). The flapping bristled wing follows a pronounced figure- eight loop that consists of subperpendicular up and down strokes followed by claps at stroke reversals, above and below the body. Computational analyses suggest a functional decomposition of the flapping cycle in two power half strokes producing a large upward force and two down-dragging recovery half strokes. In contrast to heavier membranous wings, the motion of bristled wings of the same size requires little inertial power. Muscle mechanical power requirements thus remain positive throughout the wing beat cycle, making elastic energy storage obsolete. This novel flight style evolved during miniaturization may compensate for costs associated with air viscosity and helps explain how extremely small insects preserved superb aerial performance during miniaturization.

Many pyrophilic species are attracted to potential substratum-rich recently burned forest by smoke and heat. Modern forestry has dramatically reduced the amount and size of forest fires in northern Europe during the last century and as a result several of the pyrophilic species are now threatened. The aim of this study was to analyse how the occurrence of insects such as Diptera of the pyrophilic genus Microsania, pyrophilic Coleoptera, obligate saproxylic Coleoptera and Coleoptera with unknown fire-dependency were affected by the forest fire history during the last 14 years. The aim was also to analyse what effect the spatial and temporal scales of the forest fire history has on the occurrence of these insects.

A reconstruction of the evolutionary sequence of changes associated with Accepted 6 January 2019 miniaturization is proposed. The wings of several species are described using light microscopy and Available online 14 January 2019 scanning electron microscopy. The morphology and scaling are analyzed in comparison with larger representatives of related groups. The wings of all studied ptiliids show some degree of ptiloptery Keywords: (feather-like shape, typical for extremely small insects). In larger ptiliids the wing contains at least five Microinsects veins, has a wide blade, and bears a marginal fringe of 200e300 setae; in the smallest species it has three ptiloptery wing venation veins or fewer, a narrow blade, and about 40 setae along the margin. The setae are brush-like; peculiar Staphylinoidea outgrowths, denser towards the apex, increase the effective diameter of the setae. Morphometric Ptiliidae analysis shows that the geometry of the wings and their elements strongly differs from those of other staphyliniform beetles, suggesting that the aerodynamics of the feather-like wings may also differ distinctly from the usual pattern.

  • Protocol for Preparation of Heterogeneous Biological Samples for 3D Electron Microscopy: a Case Study for Insects Alexey A
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Protocol for preparation of heterogeneous biological samples for 3D electron microscopy: a case study for insects Alexey A. Polilov1*, Anastasia A. Makarova1, Song Pang2, C. Shan Xu2 & Harald Hess2 Modern morphological and structural studies are coming to a new level by incorporating the latest methods of three-dimensional electron microscopy (3D-EM). One of the key problems for the wide usage of these methods is posed by difculties with sample preparation, since the methods work poorly with heterogeneous (consisting of tissues diferent in structure and in chemical composition) samples and require expensive equipment and usually much time. We have developed a simple protocol allows preparing heterogeneous biological samples suitable for 3D-EM in a laboratory that has a standard supply of equipment and reagents for electron microscopy. This protocol, combined with focused ion-beam scanning electron microscopy, makes it possible to study 3D ultrastructure of complex biological samples, e.g., whole insect heads, over their entire volume at the cellular and subcellular levels. The protocol provides new opportunities for many areas of study, including connectomics. In recent years, methods for 3D study of the ultrastructural organization of organisms have been actively devel- oped. Until recently, the only way to study spatial organization at the cellular and subcellular levels at a high defnition was to examine series of ultrathin sections using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), now a number of new methods and devices have been developed 1–3, such as the automated tape-collecting ultrami- crotome (ATUM4), scanning electron microscope with integrated microtome (SBF-SEM5), focused ion-beam scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM6–8), gas cluster ion beam scanning electron microscope (GCIB-SEM9), and others.
