Michiel Coxcie was one of the most influential painters in the sixteenth-century Low Countries. His nickname the ‘Flemish Raphael’ illustrates just how highly his talent was rated at that time. During his lifetime he was compared to the greatest Italian renaissance artist Raphael. Exhibition curators: Prof. Dr. Koenraad Jonckheere, University of Ghent Dr. Peter Carpreau, Head of the Old Masters Department at M – Museum Leuven 1 2 INTRODUCTION Though few people today are familiar with his name, Michiel Coxcie was probably one of the most important painters in the Netherlands in the sixteenth century. His nickname, the “Flemish Raphael”, illustrates just how highly his art was rated. He was compared to the greatest renaissance master and regarded by some as his match. The position Coxcie occupied was on a par with that of Rubens and other great masters. Coxcie was born at the end of the fifteenth century and died in 1592 at the age of 93 following a fall from scaffolding. He was restoring one of his paintings in the Town Hall in Antwerp when he lost his balance. So his career spanned almost the whole of the tumultuous sixteenth century: from the Reformation and the Iconoclasm to the Catholic answer to that.

Oktober 2013 bis zum 23. Februar 2014 findet im M – Museum Leuven (Löwen) die allererste Übersichtsausstellung zum Werk des flämischen Meisters Michiel Coxcie statt. Michiel Coxcie (1499-1592) war einer der einflussreichsten flämischen Maler des 16. Jahrhunderts. Schon zu seinen Lebzeiten wurde er „flämischer Raffael“ genannt – ein Beweis, wie sehr ihn seine Zeitgenossen und Künstlerkollegen achteten und bewunderten. Jahrhundert, als einer der größten flämischen Maler. Seine Zeitgenossen verliehen ihm den Beinamen „flämischer Raffael“ – ein Beweis dafür, wie sehr sie ihn bewunderten und schätzten. Viele verglichen ihn mit den berühmten italienischen Renaissancemalern; ja, er galt als ihnen ebenbürtig. Sein Ansehen entsprach dem Ruhm, der ein Jahrhundert später Rubens und den großen Barockmalern zuteilwerden sollte. Coxcie wurde Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts geboren und starb 1592 im Alter von 93 Jahren an den Folgen eines Sturzes von einem Gerüst im Antwerpener Rathaus. Dort hatte er praktisch bis zu seinem letzten Atemzug eines seiner eigenen Gemälde ausgebessert. Seine Künstlerlaufbahn überspannte fast das gesamte turbulente 16. Jahrhundert – ein Jahrhundert, das von Reformation, Bildersturm und Gegenreformation geprägt war.     WHAT Architect WHERE Notes Zone 1: City Center- Bruxelles-Ville Galerie Ravenstein was built in 1958 as a shopping center. Its original aim was to give a new boost to the neighbourhood, which was heavily affected by the destructive works for the Nord-Midi (north-south) junction. Designed as a shopping gallery which could house 81 shops, it was built between 1954 and 1958 in the International style, according to Alexis and Philippe plans by the architects Alexis and Philippe Dumont, who designed the *** Galerie Ravenstein Rue Ravenstein 18 Dumont nearby building which houses Shell’s offices. From rue Ravenstein, a huge porch gives access to a staircase under a cupola which compensates for the ten-metre height difference that exists between the two streets. When it opened, it accommodated over 80 shops. The innovative skylight and stellar artwork incorporated into the design of the arcade are striking features to be admired. A cinema documentation centre has recently opened with thousands of books, magazines and more than a million photographs, which can be perused in the reading room. Forty displays trace the early days of Victor Horta cinema i.e. the main inventions that led to the discovery of *** CINEMATIC and Robbrecht & Rue Baron Horta 9 cinematography by the Lumière brothers. For the renovation and Daem (renovation) refurbishment of the Film Museum, located in the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels, the architects used new and old means. The light and the visual angles in Victor Horta's building were used to let Cinematek connect with the rest of the structure.
