The Globalization of Chinese Food ANTHROPOLOGY OF ASIA SERIES Series Editor: Grant Evans, University ofHong Kong Asia today is one ofthe most dynamic regions ofthe world. The previously predominant image of 'timeless peasants' has given way to the image of fast-paced business people, mass consumerism and high-rise urban conglomerations. Yet much discourse remains entrenched in the polarities of 'East vs. West', 'Tradition vs. Change'. This series hopes to provide a forum for anthropological studies which break with such polarities. It will publish titles dealing with cosmopolitanism, cultural identity, representa tions, arts and performance. The complexities of urban Asia, its elites, its political rituals, and its families will also be explored. • Definition of Pantomime: A Theatrical Entertainment, Mainly for Children
Definition of Pantomime: A theatrical entertainment, mainly for children, which involves music, topical jokes, and slapstick comedy and is based on a fairy tale or nursery story, usually produced around Christmas. A typical Pantomime storyline: Normally, a pantomime is an adapted fairytale so it is usually a magical love story which involves something going wrong (usually the fault of an evil baddy) but the ending (often after a fight between good and evil) is always happy and results in true love. Key characters in Pantomime: The female love interest, e.g Snow White, Cinderella etc The Handsome Prince e.g Prince Charming The evil character e.g the evil Queen in Snow White The faithful sidekick - e.g Buttons in Cinderella The Pantomime Dame - provides most of the comedy - an exaggerated female, always played by a man for laughs How to act in a pantomime style: 1. Your character is an over-the-top type’, not a real person, so exaggerate as much as you can, in gesture, voice and movement 2. Speak to the audience - if you are a ‘Goody’, your character must be likeable or funny. If you are a ‘Baddy’, insult your audience, make them dislike you from the start. 3. There is always a narrator - make sure she knows speaks confidently and knows the story well. 4. Encourage the audience to be involved by asking for the audience’s help, e.g “If you see that naughty boy will you tell me?” 5. If you are playing that ‘naughty boy’, make eye contact with the audience and creep on stage.

These events center around the figure of the Krampus, a beast-like, punishing “devil” that accompanies St. Nicholas on December 5, the eve of his feast day. By 2010, groups of people in US cities were staging their own Krampusnacht processions in downtown areas, referencing the European enactments while simultaneously innovating their embodiments to meaningfully interact with the Christmas season in the United States. Participation in these events increases annually and the Krampus figure’s presence online and in popular media is on the rise.

  • English Christmas Pantomime: Theatre Or Community Activism
Journal of Literature and Art Studies, July 2016, Vol. 6, No. 7, 804-810 doi: 10.17265/2159-5836/2016.07.011 D DAVID PUBLISHING English Christmas Pantomime: Theatre or Community Activism Pete Reader, MFA Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ, USA How is English Christmas panto community activism? The structure of pantomime has not changed in a hundred years, but allows for local creativity to work within its framework to be both family entertainment and social satire. This basic structure is founded on a children’s story like Puss’n’boots or Cinderella. The story and character types remain the same; but the community can add their own jokes and commentary to make the play relevant to themselves and their community. What is added by the community says a lot about who they are and what they care about. The company Price-Waterhouse-Coopers produces their pantomime as management training and team building while engaging the community. The Basel Swiss panto raises money for African Charities. The Maplewood, NJ panto raises money for the homeless and the Jaguar Charity panto in Birmingham performs to disadvantaged children and adults. The productions can be extravagant or threadbare, but share the same goal of raising cheer and goodwill to the benefit of the community. What is it, then, about panto that brings a community together in such civic mindedness? Keywords: English Christmas pantomine, community engagement, theatre, activism Historical Overview English Christmas Pantomime is an odd form of theatre that serves as a vehicle for local communities to come together, in a form of civic activism, to present plays for the benefit of the community and local charities.

  • December 2005 in Hong Kong 30.12.2005 / No 24
December 2005 in Hong Kong 30.12.2005 / No 24 A condensed press review prepared by the Consulate General of Switzerland in HK Introduction WTO - It's a deal: Round-the-clock negotiations by trade ministers on the final day of the World Trade Organization ministerial conference in HK yielded a last-minute deal as countries agreed to preferential treatment for goods produced by the world's poorest countries, and cuts in financial assistance for farmers and cotton growers in richer countries. Farewell to a dirty year in politics: Last week's constitutional reform fiasco marked a breathless end to a year of roller-coaster politics featuring the downfall of Tung Chee-hwa, the rise of Donald Tsang and a new wave of democracy demands. As Mr Tsang reflects on the political scene after concluding a duty visit to Beijing - his first since taking up the post of chief executive - he is likely to be baffled, if not awed, by the volatility of HK politics. Domestic politics Article 45 group set to become new party: Founded in 2003 as a loose grouping of mostly barristers fighting for democracy, the Article 45 Concern Group has decided to register as an apolitical party underlining that a lot of HK people who support democracy are looking for a political party that is more moderate than the Democratic Party. Lam hits hopes for universal suffrage timetable: A top official poured cold water on any hopes the pro-democracy camp harboured of bargaining with the government for a timetable for universal suffrage. In describing the December 4 mass protest for full democracy as "mission impossible," Secretary for Constitutional Affairs Stephen Lam made it clear that, when dealing with the timetable issue, the government cannot only listen to opposition legislators without regard for other parties' views.

  • Interpreting Political Image of Donald Tsang in Alternative Media Wong Wai Kwok
Interpreting Political image of Donald Tsang in Alternative Media Wong Wai Kwok The emergence and rapid development of the Internet facilitates the interaction amongst people, and the exchange of information. With the continuous upgrading and renewal of hardware and software, the merging of internet and cellular phones and laptop, the popularity of tablet computers, the adoption of user-friendly approach in sharing videos (e.g., YouTube) and social networking platforms (e.g., Facebook and Facebook groups), the popularity of information technology leads to people who can be receiving information without unceasing, as well as entertaining, sharing the personal feelings and observations in written, visual, or cinematic forms, thereby articulating collectively cyberspace. Such a cyberspace, in turn, becomes a powerful platform creating, producing and dissimilating sub-culture, forging an alliance with various organizations, participating actively the political process, and facilitating the identity formation for such participants (Pini, Brown and Previte, 2004, p. 273). In response to the existing political, social and economic context, the Internet serves as an important tool to provide information and facilitate communication, thereby creating an opportunity for those who can be active in the arena. Being labeled as “netizens”, they deliberately and spontaneously aggregate together and then deploy the harsh, critical, and humorous approach to write about and respond to the political institutions, leadership, and practices, aiming at challenging and even opposing the authorities. Some of them even adopt the abusive and porn language to express the grievances associated with the critical and desperate conditions resulting from the worsening political environment. Such netizens in general make the identical expectation, saying that their ideas, feelings and opinions which have been devalued and excluded from the mainstream society can be expressed, heard and acknowledged in the first instance, and then shared, circulated, discussed and reproduced during the course.
