Mushkbudji, the Fragrance of

Endemic to the Kokernag area of Anantnag, Mushkbudji is a variety of fragrant rice whose marketing potential has been recognized and efforts are underway to put the 8 villages adopted for its product ion on the map.

The story of Mushkbudji was almost a story of unrequited love. The farmers engaged in its cultivation were unable to find buyers for their produce. The frustrations would have culminated in an abandonment of the fragrant rice, forcing the farmers to shift to other crops. With the formulation of FPO and a portal dedicated for this endemic cereal, the farmers and this exotic variety were given a new life. We pledge that we will push for Geographical indication status for Mushkbudji and provide all the support needed to keep this fragrance from leaving our homes. After our intervention, today, the annual anticipated production for the year 2020-21 of Mushkbudji from an estimated 120 hectares covering 336 farming families is 5760 quintals.
