Brief District Profile District Anantnag Is One of the Oldest Districts of The
District at a Glance Brief District Profile District Anantnag is one of the oldest districts of the valley and covered the entire south Kashmir before its bifurcation into Anantnag and Pulwama in 1979. The districts of Anantnag and Pulwama later got sub-divided into Kulgam and Shopian, in 2007. The districts of Pulwama and Kulgam lie on the north and north-west of District Anantnag, respectively. The district of Ganderbal and Kargil touch its eastern boundary and the district of Kishtawar meets on its southern boundary whileas District Doda touches its west land strip. The population of the district, as per census 2011, is 1078692 (10.79 lac) souls, comprising of 153640 households, with a gender distribution of 559767 (5.60 lac) males and 518925 (5.19 lac) females and as per the natural arrangement the district has 927 females against 1000 males while as it is 1000:889 at the state level. The Rural, Urban constitution of the populations stands in the ratio of 74:26 as against 73:27 for the state. 1 District at a Glance The district consists of 386 inhabited and 09 un-inhabited revenue villages. Besides, there is one Municipal Council and 09 Municipal Committees in the district. The district consists of 12 tehsils, viz, Anantnag, Anantnag-East, Bijbehara, Dooru, Kokernag, Larnoo, Pahalgam, Qazigund, Sallar, Shahabad Bala, Shangus and Srigufwara with four sub-divisions viz Bijbehara, Kokernag, Dooru and Pahalgam. The district is also divided into 16 CD blocks, viz, Achabal, Anantnag, Bijbehara, Breng, Chhittergul, Dachnipora, Hiller Shahabad, Khoveripora, Larnoo, Pahalgam, Qazigund, Sagam, Shahabad, Shangus, Verinag and Vessu for ensuring speedy and all-out development of rural areas. -

ABSTRACT Kashmir valley which is functionally a city-centered region, for the geographical, historical, socio-economic forces of urbanization have shaped and contributed to the emergence of urban primacy of Srinagar city. Being the single largest city, Srinagar constitutes around two-third of the state's urban population. The socio-cultural artifacts of Srinagar city is the accretion of a long period of time as over a period of six hundred years or so, the city has cradled itself between the hills of Hariparbat (Hawal) and Shankaracharya (Dalgate) along the banks of the river Jhelum. The present city thus stands as a mirror to reflect the complex historical background of the various stages which it has passed through. Srinagar City has grown enormously in the last twenty years. Apropos to this, the present study tries to analyse and examine the spatial, socio- economic, historical and related characteristics of the Srinagar metropolis- the Heart of Valley. The authors suggested some revival measures for better urban management of the historic Srinagar city. 1 2 3 DEVELOPMENT SCENARIO General Azad Jammu and Kashmir lies between longitude 730 - 750 and latitude of 33o - 36o and comprises of an area of 5134 Square Miles (13297 Square Kilometers). The topography of the area is mainly hilly and mountainous with valleys and stretches of plains. Azad Kashmir is bestowed with natural beauty having thick forests, fast flowing rivers and winding streams, main rivers are Jehlum, Neelum and Poonch. The climate is sub-tropical highland type with an average yearly rainfall of 1300 mm. The elevation from sea level ranges from 360 meters in the south to 6325 meters in the north. The snow line in winter is around 1200 meters above sea level while in summer, it rises to 3300 meters. According to the 1998 population census the state of Azad Jammu & Kashmir had a population of 2.973 million, which is estimated to have grown to 3.868 million in 2009. Almost 100% population comprises of Muslims. The Rural: urban population ratio is 88:12. The population density is 291 persons per Sq. Km. Literacy rate which was 55% in 1998 census has now raised to 64%. Approximately the infant mortality rate is 56 per 1000 live births, whereas the immunization rate for the children under 5 years of age is more than 95%. The majority of the rural population depends on forestry, livestock, agriculture and non- formal employment to eke out its subsistence. Average per capita income has been estimated to be 1042 US$*. Unemployment ranges from 6.0 to 6.5%. In line with the National trends, indicators of social sector particularly health and population have not shown much proficiency. -

District Budgam - a Profile
DISTRICT BUDGAM - A PROFILE Budgam is one of the youngest districts of J&K, carved out as it was from the erstwhile District Srinagar in 1979. Situated at an average height of 5,281 feet above sea-level and at the 34°00´.54´´ N. Latitude and 74°.43´11´´ E. Longitude., the district was known as Deedmarbag in ancient times. The topography of the district is mixed with both mountainous and plain areas. The climate is of the temperate type with the upper-reaches receiving heavy snowfall in winter. The average annual rainfall of the district is 585 mm. While the southern and south-western parts are mostly hilly, the eastern and northern parts of the district are plain. The average height of the mountains is 1,610 m and the total area under forest cover is 477 sq. km. The soil is loose and mostly denuded karewas dot the landscape. Comprising Three Sub-Divisions - Beerwah, Chadoora and Khansahib; Nine Tehsils - Budgam, Beerwah, B.K.Pora, Chadoora, Charisharief, Khag, Khansahib, Magam and Narbal; the district has been divided into seventeen blocks namely Beerwah, Budgam, B.K.Pora, Chadoora, ChrariSharief, Khag, Khansahib, Nagam, Narbal, Pakherpoa, Parnewa, Rathsun, Soibugh, Sukhnag, Surasyar, S.K.Pora and Waterhail which serve as prime units of economic development.
