A definitive funk style combined with more traditional progressive rock sounds and keyboards make for a fresh and unique listen. Godsticks is like a progressive blend of Beardfish, with their prominent baselines, and more recent alternative rock, although with a more visible sense of humor. As of right now Godsticks has only released their debut EP, a promising self-release that shows that the band have legs under them and are ready to run. The band says that they originally branched off into writing original material because they wanted to hear elements that were not present in the music they were inspired by. Godsticks is definitely going to be a band to watch over the coming years as they prepare to release a debut album, and with their fresh approach which fuses progressive rock with a heavy funk they can definitely be seen as an innovative force. Light and optimistic tunes dominate this 5-track EP; where the emphasis seems to be to create joyful and pleasant moods and atmospheres. The guitarwork is mostly of a mellow nature - acoustic guitars and undistorted clean patterns dominating - and the joyful spirit of the songs to some extent hides some rather nifty contributions by this instrument. Singles/EPs/Fan Club/Promo, The vocals are the key feature in these excursions however; the instrumentation sets up a foundation for Darran Charles charming 2008 vocals first and foremost; and besides his vocal assets a distinct bass guitar is the most noticeable element on this production. 3.05 | 3 ratings Personally I found the jazz-tinged affair "Puppy Gardener" to be a standout effort here; especially the first half or so of this song BUY highlights instrumental contrasts and musical complexities in a nice and captivating manner. Still, joyful art pop is the name of the game here - and those looking for pleasant tunes of this nature should find this EP a rewarding experience. This band with their debut EP really came out of nowhere to make an excellent strike at the progressive community. What we have here is a 3-piece band out of Wales with a very unique and intriguing sound, and though this EP is only the start to what should be a promising career, it really is an excellent listen time after time. Running at 22-minutes in length the disc is just about a full blown studio release anyways, and the amount of polish and effort put into the disc really separate this band from a lot of other bands attempting to Singles/EPs/Fan Club/Promo, hit it off. 2008 3.05 | 3 ratings Godsticks must have learned something in their early days as a cover band, because it is really hard to compare them to any other BUY band. The band plays a style of music that is almost unclassifiable, it's surprisingly 'large' sounding for a 3-piece group and it has enough funk to it to make you want to dance. Still there's a heavy amount of keyboards and virtuosic musicianship to make the hardcore proggers turn their head in notice. Speed changes in some of the songs make for some spine chilling moments that will bring a smile to your face just about every time, and the unmistakable groove in many of the songs just makes you want to put them on repeat. Jason Marsh is immediately a notable player with his aggressive style of bass playing that dominates many of the tracks as ''The Fish'' once did in Yes. The intro to Puppy Gardener is an absolutely wonderful fiasco of bass playing until the rest of the band comes in. While this song is definitely the highlight of the entire disc it's not only because of the bass playing. Steve Roberts makes the skins interesting with his playing that can keep your head bobbing while Darran Charles distinct voice delivers some quirky lines and his subtle, yet effective guitar playing add yet another layer to the music. Of course, let's not forget about the rest of these excellent tracks. Not The Face opens up the fray with a splash of keyboards before moving right into the tune. If there's one thing you really have to respect about this band it has got to be the way they are able to maneuver through concisely written tunes as though they had 20-minutes to let a song unfold. The songs are all fairly short, between 3-6 minutes each, but all the songs have enough time to develop themes and nothing ever feels like it's 'cut short'. Only When Provoked opens up with some soothing guitar reminiscent of an emotional Joe Satriani and that dominant bass which leads into the main section of the song. Excellent melodies help make this one yet another standout on the album. The second half of the EP is a lot more 'calm', but no less impressive. Venial is a pleasing and very serene tune that has a nice little breakdown coming into the beginning of the chorus. That unmissable funk comes back full force in this song but still manages to stay subtle throughout the tune, making for a very pleasing combination of laid back and demanding - like a perfectly mixed drink. A wonderfully emotive guitar solo from Charles coming into the second half is enough to give you chills as the song slowly makes its way to the end. It ends with another calm tune in the form of Clinical which is largely reminiscent of a progressive version of The Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Charles makes subdued use of his voice, as he seems to know its limits well. By the time the album ends you'll no doubt be salivating for more. It seems like there's been a lot of excellent debut EPs sprouting up all over the place. Between these guys and other acts like Mekhlin there's a very promising new progressive scene emerging that has a very unique sound that should shush all the nay-sayers who are saying that progressive music is becoming stale.

Alan Williams: Surround Sound Auteurs and the Fragmenting of Genre Abstract Multi-channel sonic experience is derived from a myriad of technological processes, shaped by market forces, configured by creative decision makers and translated through audience taste preferences. From the failed launch of quadrophonic sound in the 1970s, through the currently limited, yet sustained niche market for 5.1 music releases, a select number of mix engineers and producers established paradigms for defining expanded sound stages. Whe- reas stereophonic mix practices in popular music became ever more codified during the 1970s, the relative paucity of multi-channel releases has preserved the individual sonic fingerprint of mixers working in surround sound. More- over, market forces have constricted their work to musical genres that appeal to the audiophile community that supports the format. This study examines the work of Elliot Scheiner, Bob Clearmountain, Giles Martin, and Steven Wilson to not only analyze the sonic signatures of their mixes, but to address how their conceptions of the soundstage become associated with specific genres, and serve to establish micro-genres of their own. I conclude by ar- guing that auteurs such as Steven Wilson have amassed an audience for their mixes, with a catalog that crosses genre boundaries, establishing a mode of listening that in itself represents an emergent genre – surround rock.

  • Artistic Influences on Progressive Rock
Artistic Influences on Progressive Rock Document 1: Interview with Steve Hackett, Former Songwriter and Guitarist for the Band Genesis “When I was in Genesis many years ago, we did an interview and we were all asked to name a particular tune that we thought was a great influence, and four out of five of us, without conferring, chose “MacArthur Park.” So, you’ve got this tune which in many ways was the template for many things that Genesis did subsequently, something that doesn’t really have a clearly defined verse and chorus. It’s got several different verses that all vary from each other, and then a musical workout in the middle, and then a recapitulation at the end. It’s almost this kind of mini opera, and it ended up influencing a lot of people…. “I think what was defining for me was seeing King Crimson in 1969 on stage before they recorded their first album. It seemed I had never before seen a band that were quite so broad based, and they were all fluent music readers. And suddenly it seemed as if that was going to auger in a much more disciplined, more precise era of music. Jazz was certainly welcome, and classical music was welcome, with the epic nature of some of those songs…. That mixture of genres is so important to what we now call progressive, where it’s music without prejudice and music without limits.” -- Interview with Prog Rocks at the 2012 Prog Awards Discuss: • In what ways was “MacArthur Park” a template for Genesis and other Prog bands? • Why does Hackett believe King Crimson was so influential to Prog Rock? • What types of music does Prog incorporate? • What do you think Hackett means when he says Progressive Rock is “music without prejudice and music without limits”? Document 2: The Influence of Classical Music on Prog “The defining features of Progressive Rock, those elements that serve to separate it from other contemporary styles of popular music, are all drawn from the European classical tradition.

  • Darkwater – Human
• MUSIC 262: Art/Prog Rock [Brian Ward Demonstrates a Tune on Piano
MUSIC 262: Art/Prog Rock [Brian Ward demonstrates a tune on piano] [Brian Ward]: So around this time in rock and roll we really start to see a lot of fragmentation going on, and that’s reflected in this course. The way we have this designed is so that we can go in different directions with the music, and that’s what the music did all sort of at the same time. One of the directions is what we now call art rock and also progressive rock. Now art rock and progressive rock are terms that are used loosely. A good way to describe it is art rock is rock and roll that is influenced by classical music while progressive rock is more influenced by jazz, so- but you have different elements in varying degrees of influence and in different ways. A good illustration of that is one of the first bands that I want to talk about is The Who. Now The Who were definitely a straight down the line rock and roll band, and they started like a lot of these other British bands: imitating the blues and rhythm and blues music from the United States, but The Who were very unique. They had probably the most four individualized members of any band of all time. All four members of the band, Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon, were all very, very different people coming from different backgrounds, and that reflected in their music, and they used that to their advantage quite a bit. But with The Who I think rock star first becoming an art form in the sense that they had longer forms and they used many structures that eventually became mini-operas and they eventually made a rock opera called “Tommy.” Now when they started out they were more on the cutting edge of hard rock.

  • Cobra Fakir Press Quotes
WHAT THE PRESS HAS SAID ABOUT MIRIODOR COBRA FAKIR CUNEIFORM 2013 “The band is nestled within a Rock in Opposition (R.I.O) stylization that transcends progressive rock... Steeped in experimentalism. ... The band unites hi-tech electronics with acoustic-electric frameworks and colorific layers of sound. They fuse some razzle- dazzle type escapades with zinging odd-metered ostinatos, quirky deviations and regimented patterns. ... "Maringouin," boasts a hummable melody line, driven by a warm electric piano riff... majestic choruses... this piece would serve as the most radio accessible entry on the album. ... A superfine album by this time-honored unit.” [4 stars] - Glenn Astarita, All About Jazz, February 2014 “French-Canadian band Miriodor have carved out an instantly recognisable sound that straddles avant rock and jazz, and in the process have become stalwarts of the Rock In Opposition scene. ... Miriodor’s sound is accessible, playful, and rarely ventures down wilfully dark and obscure alleys. ... This album is...a good place to start with RIO. ...Cobra Fakir, or “Snake Charmer”, is a suitably hypnotic and involving album... The title track..unwinds slowly into a... second segment, Univers Zero with a lighter touch. One can hear Henry Cow’s more accessible melodic structures in here, too. ... some fabulous and tricky interplay, the rhythm section keeping things in strict control. ... Entirely instrumental, the titles have the freedom to say what they want. So we have pulsing songs about bicycle races rubbing shoulders with…speed dating on Mars. ...fun and adventure...runs through Cobra Fakir. ... We have been well and truly entertained. ... Anyone with a sense of wonder at the way some musicians can get the old synapses firing in perhaps unexpected ways should definitely investigate this complex but highly enjoyable album.
