  • A Conversation with Brandi Carlile by Frank Goodman (7/2007
A Conversation with Brandi Carlile by Frank Goodman (7/2007. Puremusic.com) Raw talent vs. expensive packaging is always a pleasant surprise in the entertainment business. Brandi Carlile is the very rare exception to the rule; she and her band made their own EP, piece by piece with their own money, and Columbia ended up buying it and putting it out. Rolling Stone chose her as one of the 10 Artists to Watch in 2005. The subsequent Columbia full length debut CD contained new versions of a number of the songs from the EP. Relentless gigging leading up to the EP and through the debut had already moved her through various styles with her running twin partners, the Hanseroth Brothers. Tim and Phil had had a hard rock band called The Fighting Machinists, and they bring that honed edge to the BC sound. She is not only a vocalist that can literally do it all, the band itself moves fluidly and convincingly from flat out country right through edgy pop radio rock. She's the only artist you can see on CMT whose main cited influences are Elton John, k.d. lang, Jeff Buckley, and Radiohead. One hears all the time now about how acts getting tunes on Grey's Anatomy can practically launch their career, but in BC's case, there was a Grey's episode that actually debuted a version of the video for Brandi's big song "The Story." Overall, no less than four of her songs have been used in the show. She's hot, super talented, and a driven workaholic.

  • Desperado Set to Fill Hht…
PRESS RELEASE – February 23, 2017 DESPERADO SET TO FILL HHT...AGAIN The band DESPERADO has a reputation for an amazing recreation of the classic sound of THE EAGLES. If you close your eyes, you would swear you were listening to one of your favorite LPs from the 70's. On Saturday March 4th at 7:00 pm you can experience that feeling too. In 2015, DESPERADO was the first group to sell out their performance at the fledgling Historic Hemet Theatre. Last year, their return visit was one of only two concerts that filled the auditorium to capacity. Now that the theatre is filling the house regularly, this appearance will certainly be no exception. With five lead vocalists and instrumentalists who have honed their musical skills in a variety of professional projects, "DESPERADO" is truly a cut above -- performing with all live sound (no backing tracks). Singing the Eagles soaring harmonies while executing the guitar parts and rhythm track to perfection, "Desperado" challenges the listener to tell the difference between what is being played live and the original versions of the songs. Leader and founding member Aaron Broering spent years putting together just the right combination of musicians to fulfill his dream of performing these well-crafted songs with the highest of skill. Recruiting performers who have traveled the world performing with The Beach Boys, David Ruffin of the Temptations, Sam Moore of Sam & Dave, and with Eagles Timothy B Schmit, Don Felder, and J.D. Souther, Desperado truly is "The Premier Eagles Tribute." Tribute to The Eagles is the third in the 2017 "Tribute Mania" concert series that is helping bring the Historic Hemet Theatre back to life.

Lakecia Benjamin’s journey into music began in the predominantly Dominican Lakecia Benjamin neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York City. She grew up listening to and eventually playing Merengue and Bachata. At just 14 years old, she Rise Up gained her independence and moved out of her parents care, earning the little Release Date: March 23, 2018 money she could from local gigs to support herself. Genre: Jazz, R&B Format: CD, Digital Even though she was zoned for George Washington High School, Lakecia was encouraged her to pursue music at La Guardia High School, a popular school for young artists, such as Marcus Miller and Nicki Minaj. At her audition for LaGuar- dia, Bob Stewart, the music director for the school, advised her that she was playing all the right notes but not in the right style. Having only Dominican inuences in her repertoire, Lakecia was unaware of the Jazz greats, but stated bluntly, “I don’t know anything about Jazz Sir; all I know is you have to let me in to this school.” Stewart could see the talent in Benjamin, and so he sent her home with a few names – Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, and John Coltrane. She listened and quickly learned their style. Lakecia was nally accepted to attend LaGuardia High School. With her talent, drive, and just a saxophone as her passport, Lakecia was set on her journey from the streets of Washington Heights to the expansive world of Jazz. As she shared her music to wider audiences, Lakecia Benjamin quickly gained recognition.

December 9, 2011 http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/ontheverge/story/2011-12-06/on-the-verge-with-indie-rock-group-grouplove/51765840/1?loc=interstitialskip Grouplove grew out of friendship By Korina Lopez, USA TODAY Group love, indeed: This Los Angeles-based quintet certainly lives up to its name. "We never planned to be a band. We were friends first and we just love being together," says lead singer Christian Zucconi. "Grouplove grew organically from that love." Their debut album, with the tongue-in-cheek title Never Trust a Happy Song, is quickly spreading the love, too. Their sweet and savory mix of jangly, upbeat melodies, Zucconi's anguished howl and keyboardist Hannah Hooper's coquettish backup vocals have been making the rounds in indie rock circles and on the charts. Joyful, noisy single Colours peaked at No. 12 on USA TODAY's alternative chart. Another track, Tongue Tied, lassoed the new iPod Touch commercial, which ran during the Grammy nominations concert and has continued since Thanksgiving. Add Grouplove's lock as the opening band for Young the Giant's tour in March and April, and it's no wonder they're so lovey-dovey. Happy accidents: Zucconi wasn't always this upbeat. "Before Grouplove, I was in other bands, but the timing never seemed right," he says. "I'd wake up every day depressed, I spent so many years miserable doing music. But it's wonderful now how we overcame everything together. It's funny that Grouplove is such a happy band." The band members met each other in 2008 at an artist commune in Crete.

  • Alt-Health: Falling — the Great Equalizer
Alt-Health: Falling — The Great Equalizer After watching Madonna fall backward off of the stage at the recent British Music Awards, I got to thinking. The old slip and fall is a great equalizer. It dumps us all indecorously upon our asses, celebrities and common folk alike. With the Motif Music Award Nominees issue upon us, I was curious to see just how many musicians have fallen at award ceremonies and performances over the years. There are entire websites devoted to this subject, a sign of how many of us enjoy watching the mighty fall. Destiny’s Child seems to be cursed by the Slip and Fall gods — Michelle Williams toppled on the stage in 2004 and Beyonce has taken some dives that could have turned a lesser person into a paraplegic. To her credit, she just kept on singing. In 2008, Joe Jonas slipped on glass, cut his hand and bled all over the stage. He made it look hot. Taylor Swift fell during a concert in 2010 and Justin Bieber has been slipping on stairs since 2009, once breaking his ankle. At the 2014 VMA awards, Iggy Azalea, Australian rapper, was twerking her impressive behind at the camera, a move that everyone appreciated, until she fell off the stage backward. The list of fallen idols includes Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Drake, Katy Perry (who somehow managed to slip five times on the ruins of a giant cake), Demi Lovato and Rihanna.
