2016 NWIBA MS/JH HONOR BAND INFORMATION (updated 09/12/2016) p. 1 of 10

The NWIBA Honor Bands provide an opportunity for students to participate in an auditioned band of the best instrumental students. The primary focus is to present the best musical performances/experiences in an atmosphere where the students learn the value of dedication, discipline, teamwork, and pride while having fun and participating in an event they will remember. The excitement generated from participating will carry back to the student’s school and instrumental music program. NWIBA Honor Bands have been designed to enhance the education and development of young instrumental performers.

ALLIOWA 8TH GRADE HONOR BAND

The AllIowa 8th grade Honor Band first concert was in May, 1989. This 132 piece band is comprised of 8th grade students from the six regional IBA districts. The quotas for each district are determined by the IBA JH/MS Affairs Committee.

Each district has its own specific requirements for selection into the AllIowa 8th Grade Honor Band. The auditions for the students from the NWIBA district are held in conjunction with the NWIBA MS/JH Honor Band auditions. The audition requirements are the same. The highest seated 8th grade students are chosen for the AllIowa 8th Grade Honor Band, if they are of All Iowa Honor Band caliber. It is possible for 7th grade students to be seated ahead of an 8th grade student in the NWIBA Honor Bands. The identification of 8th grade students is not done until after the seating order of the NWIBA MS/JH Honor Bands is determined. If a judge feels there is no 8th grade student of AllIowa 8th Grade Honor Band caliber, no student is chosen for that instrument.

Students who are selected from each IBA district meet in May at the IBA Conference for a one day rehearsal and concert.
