CAMPUS: BHS & CHS COURSE: AP Literature and Composition & NVC DC World Literature HONORS/AP SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT PURPOSE Boerne ISD believes that the key to being a great reader is to read extensively, and the key to being a great writer is through exposure to great writing. Reading is not solely reserved for the school year; life-long learning stems from becoming a life-long reader. Summer provides time to enjoy uninterrupted reading that allows students to absorb and contemplate ideas from their reading experience in preparation for beginning of the school year literary discussions. Summer reading and the subsequent in-class assignments give students a strong foundation to build upon as they move through the Honors/AP English Language Arts program. ELAR Secondary Coordinator: Jayne M. Burton [email protected] Students in AP Literature/DC World Literature explore literary concepts and hone their literary analysis skills through a survey of literature that includes a wide variety of authors and time periods. For summer reading this year, please choose at least one novel from the list on page 2 or another novel by an author who is on this list. ● Your choice(s) should be 250 pages (minimum) and written within the last 50 years. ● We are encouraging you to substantially add to your reading experiences, therefore, the novel should not be one you have read before. Many of these I have read, but some I have not read. All have received critical acclaim. As always, if you begin a novel and find that it is objectionable, in some way, then you may begin another novel. You all are mature readers and should be able to make decisions about your reading life and how to handle the problem, particularly since this course is considered a sophomore-level college course. This novel must be completed by the first day of class, and you are expected to bring the novel to class beginning with the first day of the school year. 235 W.
