WHY TAKE THIS COURSE? The abbreviation “Ph.D.” stands for the Latin term “philosophiae doctor”, or Doctor of Philosophy. My strong and passionate belief is that no student should earn a Ph.D. without a basic understanding of the philosophy of science and of the positivist tradition underlying the research methods we teach Ph.D. students at UMSL. Do you believe that laws govern social phenomena? Do you believe that as a researcher, you are a detached and objective observer? Do you believe you can study social phenomena by mathematically modeling it? If you do, you have subscribed to positivist assumptions. There is nothing wrong with holding these assumptions, but they should be examined, reflected upon and chosen judiciously in light of alternative views like antipositivism. Antipositivism (or interpretive approaches) assume that meaning in the social world (including business) is socially constructed and temporally fluid. Interpretive researchers are concerned with understanding what is specific, interesting and unique about social phenomena and how such understanding is bounded by time, context, and culture (Dudovskiy 2015; Walsham 1993). With interpretive approaches, researchers engage closely and naturalistically with “participants” to collaboratively co-construct meaning. Interpretive researchers treat research participants as contributors to the sense-making process of inquiry; they are not passive “subjects” to be remotely observed and analyzed. Furthermore, the researcher is not presumed to be an objective witness. The researcher even may take on the additional roles of consultant, activist, or emancipator. Qualitative methods, particularly interviewing, text analysis, and participant observation can be used in positivist, antipositivist, and critical research approaches. Qualitative methods can be used with quantitative methods, or used on their own as a valid approach to scientific inquiry. As a Ph.D. student, if you are delighted with the quantitative methods you have learned, then this course will better help you understand the traditions that created them. If you are a bit lost concerning a method to use in your dissertation, you might find a qualitative research approach that complements your own interests. Above all else, a Ph.D. should change the way one thinks, which will change the way one experiences the world. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This seminar presents an introduction to philosophical concepts and qualitative research methods underlying scientific inquiry in business research. The philosophical and methodological foundations are largely built upon the philosophies, theories, and methods from the physical and social sciences. In this course, we survey a variety of philosophical perspectives and qualitative methods from other disciplines by reading the original works, critical responses to these works, and representative applications of these ideas in business/LOM domains. Beyond reading about and discussing research, students gain valuable experience by doing two qualitative research projects. Logically, we should first cover all of philosophy of science, followed by qualitative methods. Practically, we have a brief introduction of sociological paradigms (part of philosophy of science), followed by the study qualitative research methods because students need the entire semester to complete the qualitative research projects. The final sessions cover more philosophy of science. Interviewing is an important skill associated with qualitative research. The learning goals from this project include: Designing a qualitative research study Defending the use of a qualitative method Developing an interview guide, usually based on theory Pro-actively finding appropriate participants to interview Interviewing five or more people Interpreting the interviews (cross interview analysis) Communicating findings orally and in writing Each student will do one participant observation exercise. The learning goals from this project focus on improving field research skills, including: Developing research questions that are best answered with participant observation Building the courage to engage in new situations with new people Developing observational skills Developing interpretive skills Learning your strengths and weaknesses as a field researcher Ph.D. Readiness Objectives: All Ph.D. students enrolled in the NIH course will obtain Protecting Human Research Participants certification. Describe the primary criteria used to determine who should be listed as an author on a scholarly publication. Describe the range of acceptable authorship practices, including different conventions used to determine the order of authors. Discuss the value of peer review as it relates to publications and grant awards. Identify ethical issues associated with peer review. Describe the ethical obligations of a peer reviewer. Explain the importance of collaborative research and why it is increasingly common. Discuss challenges associated with interdisciplinary research collaborations and ways to meet them. Describe ethical considerations in international collaborative research and in academic-industry partnerships.     The Philosophical Underpinnings of Educational Research Lindsay Mack Abstract This article traces the underlying theoretical framework of educational research. It outlines the definitions of epistemology, ontology and paradigm and the origins, main tenets, and key thinkers of the 3 paradigms; positivist, interpetivist and critical. By closely analyzing each paradigm, the literature review focuses on the ontological and epistemological assumptions of each paradigm. Finally the author analyzes not only the paradigm’s weakness but also the author’s own construct of reality and knowledge which align with the critical paradigm. Key terms: Paradigm, Ontology, Epistemology, Positivism, Interpretivism The English Language Teaching (ELT) field has moved from an ad hoc field with amateurish research to a much more serious enterprise of professionalism. More teachers are conducting research to not only inform their teaching in the classroom but also to bridge the gap between the external researcher dictating policy and the teacher negotiating that policy with the practical demands of their classroom. I was a layperson, not an educational researcher. Determined to emancipate myself from my layperson identity, I began to analyze the different philosophical underpinnings of each paradigm, reading about the great thinkers’ theories and the evolution of social science research. Through this process I began to examine how I view the world, thus realizing my own construction of knowledge and social reality, which is actually quite loose and chaotic. Most importantly, I realized that I identify most with the critical paradigm assumptions and that my future desired role as an educational researcher is to affect change and challenge dominant social and political discourses in ELT.

    Weber/Editor’s Comments EDITOR’S COMMENTS The Rhetoric of Positivism Versus Interpretivism: A Personal View1 Many years ago I attended a conference on interpretive research in information systems. My goal was to learn more about interpretive research. In my Ph.D. education, I had studied primarily positivist research methods—for example, experiments, surveys, and field studies. I knew little, however, about interpretive methods. I hoped to improve my knowledge of interpretive methods with a view to using them in due course in my research work. A plenary session at the conference was devoted to a panel discussion on improving the acceptance of interpretive methods within the information systems discipline. During the session, a number of speakers criticized positivist research harshly. Many members in the audience also took up the cudgel to denigrate positivist research. If any other positivistic researchers were present at the session beside me, like me they were cowed. None of us dared to rise and speak in defence of positivism. Subsequently, I came to understand better the feelings of frustration and disaffection that many early interpretive researchers in the information systems discipline experienced when they attempted to publish their work. They felt that often their research was evaluated improperly and treated unfairly. They contended that colleagues who lacked knowledge of interpretive research methods controlled most of the journals. As a result, their work was evaluated using criteria attuned to positivism rather than interpretivism. My most-vivid memory of the panel session, however, was my surprise at the way positivism was being characterized by my colleagues in the session.

    Legal Interpretivism by Ronald Dworkin (1931-2013): He is the greatest legal philosopher ever and is among the most influential moral and political philosopher of our time. He developed an original legal theory, which not only has transcended the Natural Law and Legal Positivism dichotomy, but also has reintegrated law into a branch of political morality. Interpretivism views law as being interpreted by the practice of lawyers and jurists, and claims this is the nature of law itself. Unlike other schools of legal philosophy, interpretivism views law not as something imposed from outside, but as a product of the practice of law. Interpretivists claim law has a relationship with ethics and morality, but that they are not the same. Legal interpretivism was developed in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It emerged into a legal world dominated by two ways of thinking about the philosophy of law namely legal positivism and natural law theory. Interpretivism has some similarities to both schools of thought and some important differences. It has sometimes been thought of as a middle ground between the two. Natural law theory is the older of the two schools of thought. But there is an underlying natural law that serves as the foundation for manmade law. Natural law consists of basic principles of fairness, justice, and equity that transcend cultural boundaries, and manmade or "positive" law should respect these. In some traditions, natural law is believed to proceed from divine or supernatural sources, while others see it as inherent in human nature. Dworkin integrates morality both into the choice of legal theory and into the legal argument itself.

Wagner Graduate School of Public Service New York University QUALITATIVE RESEARCH Leadership scholars seeking to answer questions about culture and meaning have found experimental and quantitative methods to be insufficient on their own in explaining the phenomenon they wish to study. As a result, qualitative research has gained momentum as a mode of inquiry. This trend has roots in the development of the New Leadership School, (Conger, 1999; Hunt, 1999), on the recent emergence of an approach to leadership that views it as a relational phenomenon (Fletcher, 2002), and on the increased recognition of the strengths of qualitative inquiry generally. Shank (2002) defines qualitative research as “a form of systematic empirical inquiry into meaning” (p. 5). By systematic he means “planned, ordered and public”, following rules agreed upon by members of the qualitative research community. By empirical, he means that this type of inquiry is grounded in the world of experience. Inquiry into meaning says researchers try to understand how others make sense of their experience. In this paper, I argue that Greenberg is wrong: positivists can in fact develop a viable constitutive account of law that meets the rational-relation requirement. I make this argument in two stages. First, I offer an account of the rational-relation requirement. Second, I put forward a viable positivist account of law that I argue meets this requirement. The account that I propose is a version of Scott Shapiro’s Planning Theory of Law. The version of Shapiro’s account that I propose combines (1) the account of concepts and conceptual analysis put forward by David Chalmers and Frank Jackson with (2) the account of the concept LEGAL INSTITUTION (and its conceptual connections to the concept LEGAL NORM)that we get from a certain reading of Shapiro’s Planning Theory. Each category represents a particular set of perspectives on organizations, business ethics, and ethical leadership. The overview can serve as a guide to decode the academic debate and to determine the positions of the scholars participating in the debate. In addition it can serve as a multi-perspective-framework to study lay concepts of ethical leadership of (executive) directors of contemporary organizations.     Chapter 2 PRINCIPLES OF SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY Introduction This chapter provides a summary of the principles of scientific inquiry. The purpose is to explain terminology, and introduce concepts, which are explained more completely in later chapters. Much of the content has been based on explanations and examples given by Wilson (1). The Scientific Method Although most of us have heard, at some time in our careers, that research must be carried out according to “the scientific method”, there is no single, scientific method. The term is usually used to mean a systematic approach to solving a problem in science. Three types of investigation, or method, can be recognized: · The Observational Method · The Experimental (and quasi-experimental) Methods, and · The Survey Method. The observational method is most common in the natural sciences, especially in fields such as biology, geology and environmental science. It involves recording observations according to a plan, which prescribes what information to collect, where it should be sought, and how it should be recorded. In the observational method, the researcher does not control any of the variables. In fact, it is important that the research be carried out in such a manner that the investigations do not change the behaviour of what is being observed. Errors introduced as a result of observing a phenomenon are known as systematic errors because they apply to all observations. Once a valid statistical sample (see Chapter Four) of observations has been recorded, the researcher analyzes and interprets the data, and develops a theory or hypothesis, which explains the observations.
