Abstract During the late eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, the Second Advent movement was a potent religious force in both Europe and North America. Its adherents focused on a specific date for the literal fulfilment of Christ’s Second Advent—his return to earth to establish his kingdom. In America, the rising prosperity and growth of social democracy of the Jacksonian era evoked a fervid optimism that for many focussed on utopian visions of America’s millennial glory. Such an environment proved fertile ground for the theories of William Miller, and his followers, the Millerites, who became the largest and most influential early nineteenth-century American premillennial group. William Miller (1782-1849) was a primarily self-educated farmer living in upstate New York who, while raised a Baptist, became a Deist as a young man. Following his participation in the War of 1812, he first questioned and then rejected his Deist beliefs, undergoing a dramatic conversion experience and rejoining the Baptist Church. In order to respond to the questions of his Deist friends regarding the Bible’s reliability and their accusations that the Bible contradicted itself, Miller began a systematic reading of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. While reading, Miller became convinced that the Second Coming of Jesus Christ to the earth would take place, “about the year 1843”. He began to publicly proclaim this Second Advent message in 1831, and soon gathered a large number of followers who accepted his message. Miller came to his conclusions because of the particular way in which he approached Scripture—seeing the Bible as a “feast of reason”—and by using a very systematic approach influenced by Scottish Common Sense Philosophy and based on Historicist principles. Miller approached the Bible “rationally” and a belief in the Bible’s perspicuity, literality, and truthfulness, was at the core of his hermeneutical approach. While he himself refrained from setting an exact date, he eventually ii accepted the October 22, 1844 date predicted by Samuel S. Snow. When this date passed without Christ’s return, the majority of Millerites gave up their beliefs. A minority of Millerites maintained their beliefs in the soon return of Jesus Christ and/or the significance of October 22, 1844. These groups developed a variety of explanations for Jesus’ non- appearance on that date and either reinterpreted the event linked to October 22, 1844 or set other dates for Christ’s return. The Seventh-day Adventist denomination that formally formed in 1860 out of these Millerite believers was one such group who developed an alternative scenario allowing them to maintain their belief in the significance of the October 22, 1844 date. The Seventh-day Adventist Church is now a 17 million strong denomination with a worldwide presence that reads and interprets the Bible using an approach that owes a great deal to Miller’s hermeneutic. The present issue is devoted to the society's annual lecture which was delivered during the study weekend held at Kirkley Hall, Ponteland, in September 1984. Dr. Sheridan Gilley, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Theology at the University of Durham, has placed the society firmly in his debt both by his readiness to lecture at unavoidably short notice and by the theme of his paper. At first sight "Newman and Prophecy", whether Evangelical or Catho­ lic, is unlikely to be of immediate relevance to our concerns. The past year, however, has seen the hundred and fiftieth anniversary of Edward Irving's death, and Dr. Gilley's paper, by reminding us that prophecy was a major concern of mainstream Protestantism until well into the nineteenth century, provides a context for our understanding of what otherwise is an embarrass- . ingly eccentric (and therefore ignored) aspect of our past. Under the third attack the nation was destroyed and its sanctuary (586 B.C.B.). See the third siege No. 4. 7. Martin Part 1: Its Historical Development from Christian Roots Seventh-day Adventism, as a religious movement, sprang from the great second advent “awakening” which shook the religious world toward the middle of the nineteenth century. During this particular period of theological development, speculation relative to the second advent of Jesus Christ had been rampant on the continent of Europe, and it was not long before the European prophetic scheme of interpretation bridged the Atlantic and penetrated American theological circles. Based largely upon the books of Daniel and Revelation (both apocalyptic), advent theology became a topic of conversation discussed in newspapers as well as theological journals; in short, New Testament eschatological study suddenly competed with current stock market quotations for front-page space, and the “seventy weeks,” “twenty-three hundred days,” and “the abomination of desolation” (see Daniel 8-9) became common subjects of conversation. Following the chronology of Archbishop Ussher and interpreting the twenty-three hundred days of Daniel as literal years, many Bible students of various faiths concluded that Christ would come back near or about the year 1843. Of this studious number was one William Miller, a Baptist minister and resident of Low Hampton, New York, who arrived at the final date, October 22, 1844, as the time when Jesus Christ would return for His saints and usher in judgment upon sin, culminating in the establishment of the Kingdom of God upon earth.     Lesson 43 Confronting Dispensational Straw Men, Part 2 Review • In the previous study we began looking at common charges made against dispensational theology by its opponents. – Dispensationalism was a new invention in the 1800s by John Nelson Darby and is therefore wrong because it is not Apostolic. “Dispensational as we know it today is of comparatively recent origin, having had its beginning in England in the last century among the Plymouth Brethren.” (J.E. Bear quoted by Mason, 21) • In doing so we saw that elements of dispensational thinking can be observed from very early in church history and throughout the Middle Ages. • In this study we want to continue surveying the history of dispensational thinking from the time of the Reformation until the time of Darby. In addition, we will look at an additional charge made against dispensationalism, the charge of divisiveness. Lastly, we will briefly consider the historical development of dispensationalism’s chief rival, Covenant Theology. Unsystematized Dispensationalism • Theodoret, Bishop of Cyrrhus (390?-457?) —is credited with having said, “God dispenseth all things suitably to the particular time, and measureth his institutions by the abilities and powers of men.” • Islam —possets a parallel to the idea of successive revelations by dispensations. “The idea in Islam is that there were 12,000 prophets (nabi), most of whom are unknown and unmentioned.
