Going 2012 KPH “Last night, Darth Vader came down from planet Vulcan and told me that if I didn’t take Lorraine out that he’d melt my brain.” - George McFly

Do you ever get the sense that, without warning, someone’s come along and cranked life into overdrive and time is all but literally flying by you? Global phenomena or singularly circumstantial—I’ve had my suspicions of being a Dr.Who-style time traveler for quite some time— suffice it to say, something’s up. Whether or not this is just the first of many indications to come that the Mayan’s were onto something—only 287 days to go!—2012 seems to be determined to set a new record for the quickest lap of our 365 day calendar and, unlike the days of yore when Christmas and birthdays seemed forever away, I find myself at the of asking whatever omnipotent force that’s locked us in at 11 to dial it back and slow things down a bit.

With my one conceit being that I wish summer, or at the very least spring, would hurry up and get on with the T-shirt appropriate seasonal programming as far as our chilly night-time temperatures are concerned, that’s where my desire for weeks passing in what feels like days comes to an end. On a college level, perhaps midterms taking place in mid-February is what has me reeling. When this hits stands we’ll be into the first week of March and I find myself still recovering from my reading break “blaissez faire,” take it easy attitude. On a personal level, perhaps it’s my inability to maintain a “healthy” sleep schedule. With my cushy pillow-top mattress and down-filled duvet mere feet away from my computer desk, giving up sleep and living off coffee for productivity’s sake just isn’t a realistic option. There’s not enough time in the day and what is there seems stone cold set on leaving me in 2011. At this rate I’ll be 64 before I feel 24.

Holding down the fort and embracing the here and now while I valiantly battle with what I’m dubbing a severe case of the “chronological Mondays,” the ever faithful staff and contributors of The Other Press visit a number of hot topics in this week’s issue. This week in news sees coverage of the robocall debacle, the ongoing BC Teachers’ Federation job action, among other buzz-worthy numbers (including an important reminder to students). Arts tackles a bevy of reviews while finding time to sit down with Douglas’ own Allan Lysell to get the pre-show scoop on the upcoming theatre production Goodnight Desdemona. Life and style checks in with our very own Jacey Gibb and Sharon Miki as their journey into the wormhole of weight loss, and involvement in Douglas College’s first Biggest Loser competition, further nears its ultimate conclusion. Life and style and opinions work to collectively remind us the value of a good meal (vegan or otherwise). Sports picks up the post- deadline pieces and reveals where some of your favourite NHL stars and prospects wound up after the events of last week. Last but not least, humour editor Liam Britten addresses life after death and reincarnation chronicling the cautionary tale of an overbearing music snob turned iPod. This week also sees the announcement of last month’s fiction and prose contest winner (PAGE 13) as well as the reveal of March’s keyword.

Alright, that’s it, the rest of the leg work is left to you. The conclusion of this lettitor marks an epoch in your time as a reader; it marks the beginning of this issue and the end of my asinine babbling. On with the show!
