In the light of this we would like to say that we set up to achieve the sub heading above but never set up to make any claims about the accuracy of the material we publish simply because we cannot check every item we receive and publish. We accept, in good faith, that the article represents the honest belief of the contributor. Equally, that should anyone consider there are factual inaccuracies in any article that they let us know their differing opinion and we will publish it provided it is not going to land us in court i.e. isn‟t offensive to or is a personal attack on anyone. We would like to move on from this episode positively and, as a magazine which is nearing the half century edition, would like to see it continue to hit the 100, have everyone pulling together in pursuit of a common chequered flag. Keith Cox an original Edinburgh Monarch Tony Webb’s coverage of the lesser known lads continues. Keith Cox had a long career in Australia from 1946-1958, he ranks as one of the few Australian legends who never reached his true potential in Britain. -

Eddie Rigg's Lifeline By Trish Gorman Eddie's granddaugther appealed on the site recently for information about Eddie's career. From the information she received, added to what she already knew, she's put together these key milestones in Eddie's life. She can be contacted at [email protected] Eddie (third from left) with the Aces of '58 1919 • Born in Burnley, Lancashire. 1936 • Apprentice Butcher. 1940 • World War Two - joined the RAF as an Air Frame Fitter within the maintenance of aircrafts. 1941 • Married Ruth. 1943 • First son David was born. 1944 • After six months David passed away to an infection of gastro-enteritis and died in January. 1947 • Started riding for Bradford. • Rode in second half races after main meeting and at Monday night training school. • Debut for Odsal at West Ham on 12 August and scored 9 points and it was also his first ever visit to London. By end of season he had scored a total of 23 league points and according to Peter Morrish in his book British Speedway Leagues 1946-64 "another bright spot was the undoubted promise of young Eddie Rigg". 1948 • Was now established member of team of Bradford and scored a total of 88 league points but the team finished bottom of the league and according to Morrish "Rigg again made sound progress" 1949 • Scored 182 league points for Bradford. 1950 • Debut for the English international speedway making his first international appearance against Australia in June at Belle Vue with a total of 12 points. -

Frank Charles d 15 July 1939 in a glider accident in Derbyshire After I’d led a walk around Rampside Churchyard in May 2019, I was asked “Why didn’t you mention Frankie Charles, the famous speedway rider.” I’d heard of him, but not seen the grave. Later, after showing me the grave (which he later cleared to find overgrown stones), this correspondent informed me: My aunt Mrs June Miller-Watt (nee Allen) lived next door to the Charles family, who had a bakehouse. She remembers Frank getting annoyed because his mother used to get him to do the bread deliveries and grease the loaf tins, when all he wanted to do was ride his bikes. Her father (Albert Allen) was his bike mechanic for some time during a period of unemployment and travelled with him to Wembley and Belle Vue, Manchester. Frank kept his bikes in a shed on the allotment garden opposite where he lived on North Row. Whenever he was tinkering with his bikes the young Roose lads would gather round chatting to the village celebrity. Sometimes he would do daredevil stunts, like riding his bike on top of the wall round Roose school, or get his accordion out and entertain them. She remembers being at the Sunday school party picnic and sports day on the field behind Roose school when Mr May, who lived opposite the school, came over and announced that Frank had been killed in a gliding accident. She said everyone there fell silent and the crowd quickly dispersed and went home. The party was definitely over. -

The Wembley Park Story – Part 4 We left Part 3 (“click” if you missed it) just after the British Empire Exhibition had closed in 1925. Its site and the buildings on it had cost around £12m (equivalent to over £700m now), but the Liquidator’s attempt to sell them at auction as a single lot was withdrawn, with the highest offer at £350k. It was later bought for just £300k by Jimmy White, a speculator who paid 10% of this “up front”, with the balance payable as the buildings were sold off. Many of the people who worked at the exhibition had been unemployed ex-servicemen. Arthur Elvin was one of these, working in a cigarette kiosk in 1924. He saved as much of his £4 10s wages as he could, and leased eight kiosks himself when the exhibition reopened in 1925, selling sweets and souvenirs as well. He bought and demolished his first small building on the site in 1926, selling the metal for scrap and rubble as hardcore for road construction. After reinvesting the profits several times, within a year he offered £122,500 for the stadium. 1. Wembley Stadium, after demolition of the BEE pavilions, c.1927. (Image from the internet?) Elvin had paid £12,500 deposit to White, with the balance payable over ten years, when in August 1927 the Official Receiver demanded it all within a fortnight! Jimmy White had only ever paid the initial £30k for the buildings, gambled away the rest, and then shot himself. By working together with friends and banks, Elvin managed to complete the purchase. -

Don Gray, Old Orchard, Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire, CB5 9JU, Telephone: 01223 862279 has posed the question above and set out to answer it in the following article. On becoming aware that I saw my first speedway meeting on Easter Monday 1930, many acquaintances ask, who, in my opinion, was the best rider in the pre-war era? A most difficult question to answer. A number of criteria present themselves from which to reach an opinion and they are viewed from different perspectives by various enthusiasts, many of whom, I might suggest, are biased towards their own particular favourites. I must concentrate on the thirties and ignore the overseas pioneers of the late 1920s when Frank Arthur and Vic Huxley reigned supreme over the inexperienced emergent British riders and when those spectacular showmen like Billy Lamont and Sprouts Elder enthralled a curious and excited public. I choose to ignore the one track specialists who performed brilliantly on their own circuits but indifferently when visiting other tracks. I put men like Jack Barnett and Phil Bishop at High Beech, the Australian Jack Bishop at Exeter, Arthur Jervis at Leicester Super and Len Parker at Bristol. Unlike the modern era, the pre-war decade was notable for the number of riders who experienced purple patches of form and dominated their peer for a few weeks, only to recede back to the category of “good” rather than “outstanding”. -
