Tourism’s contribution to the national GDP is approximately 4-5 %, generated from international & domestic tourist expenditures including government budget for tourism de- velopment programs. In terms of employment, the tourism sector provides job opportunities for more than 8 million people or 7 % of the total national labor. And the current trend in international tourism is to develop a country’s specifi c local wisdom and culture such as the wellness spa experiences in relation to healthcare. When Bali was awarded “the world’s best spa destination”, we aimed to wid- en the perspective by combining local traditional heritage for better health of the people. Prevention is always a better option, and Wellness Spa is one of the best therapies that can go global. Indonesia’s rich tradition and cultural wisdom includes that of the wellness spa. Traditional herbs and aromatherapy have been around since the time of the ancient kingdoms, and products derived from nature are still very much in use in the modern era, as therapy and a way of life of the people in nearly all the regions of the archipelago. Some famous traditional spa therapies are : Oukup from Tapanuli , Batangeh from West Sumatra, Timung from Banjar, Ratus and Lulur from Java. 5 Traditional Indonesian Wellness Spa has always been popular locally, hence the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy together with the Ministry of Health have set up a joint taskforce named IWHT (Indonesian Wellness and Healthcare Tourism) to promote and endorse more local players and stake- holders to develop and continue improving these services. Today, Spa is a thriving industry in Indonesia and IWHT, together with all its stakeholders, are working hand in hand to improve the quality of spa services, among them by creating guidelines for standardization that can be implemented in the near future. Various skyscrapers, shopping malls, luxurious housing estates, condominiums, hotels and golf courses have significantly changed both the outlook and the spatial order of the metropolitan area. Behind the development was the government's policy of deregulation, which encouraged the active involvement of the private sector in urban development. The change was accompanied by various consumptive trends such as the golf and cafe boom, shopping in gor­ geous shopping centers, and so on. The dominant values of ruling elites became extremely con­ sumptive, and this had a pervasive influence on general society. In line with this change, the emergence of a middle class attracted the attention of many observers. The salient feature of this new "middle class" was their consumptive lifestyle that parallels that of middle class as in developed countries. Thus it was the various new consumer goods and services mentioned above, and the new places of consumption that made their presence visible. After widespread land speculation and enormous oversupply of property products, the property boom turned to bust, leaving massive non-performing loans. Although the boom was not sustainable and it largely alienated urban lower strata, the boom and resulting bust represented one of the most dynamic aspect of the late New Order Indonesian society.
