Tourism’s contribution to the national GDP is approximately 4-5 %, generated from international & domestic tourist expenditures including government budget for tourism de- velopment programs. In terms of employment, the tourism sector provides job opportunities for more than 8 million people or 7 % of the total national labor. And the current trend in international tourism is to develop a country’s specifi c local wisdom and culture such as the wellness spa experiences in relation to healthcare. When Bali was awarded “the world’s best spa destination”, we aimed to wid- en the perspective by combining local traditional heritage for better health of the people. Prevention is always a better option, and Wellness Spa is one of the best therapies that can go global. Indonesia’s rich tradition and cultural wisdom includes that of the wellness spa. Traditional herbs and aromatherapy have been around since the time of the ancient kingdoms, and products derived from nature are still very much in use in the modern era, as therapy and a way of life of the people in nearly all the regions of the archipelago. Some famous traditional spa therapies are : Oukup from Tapanuli , Batangeh from West Sumatra, Timung from Banjar, Ratus and Lulur from Java. 5 Traditional Indonesian Wellness Spa has always been popular locally, hence the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy together with the Ministry of Health have set up a joint taskforce named IWHT (Indonesian Wellness and Healthcare Tourism) to promote and endorse more local players and stake- holders to develop and continue improving these services. Today, Spa is a thriving industry in Indonesia and IWHT, together with all its stakeholders, are working hand in hand to improve the quality of spa services, among them by creating guidelines for standardization that can be implemented in the near future. IWHT is proud to produce the fi rst edition of theDirectory of Indonesian Spa which will be distributed as a service of information during the 2013 APEC Summit in Bali. This Directory of Indonesian Spa provides you with a list of spas that can serve you in major cities in the country. Visit us and experience the unique, traditional wellness spa of Indonesia that will leave you relaxed, refreshed, revitalized and healthy. 6 Martha Tilaar 7 Spas in Indonesia in Brief ll over the world, including in Indonesia, spa treatment is regarded as an Aalternative health treatment. The use of water as a health recovery medium has been known since long time ago in Indonesia. The ancient and traditional bathing pools inside and/ or within the Javanese and Balinese palaces were used by royal families and the surrounding communities to enhance the well-being of body mind and spirit. Other rituals, such as oukup, batangeh and timung from other regions of Indonesia, are steambaths that use herbs, fl owers, roots and fruits that are boiled to detox and cleanse the skin. In other places, mineral mountain springs are used believed to contain curative properties to cure a wide variety of symptons as well as having a positive effect on one’s spiritual condition. The vast Indonesian rain forest holding a huge variety of plants is the second largest jungle in the world. Indonesia’s tropical climate and year round sunshine allow a huge variety of plants to grow in abundance and which are used as sources for high quality essential oils. Volcanoes that dot the archipelago generate volcanic muds, and shorelines have rich oceanic minerals that can be used as unlimited sources of spa treatment ingredients. These natural ingredients are processed in hygienic ways without the use of any chemical substances. 8 Every woman will pass six important stages in her life-cycle; starting with menstruation, marriage, pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, and fi nally the golden age. In Indonesia, we provide special and specifi c treatment for each of these six important stages in a woman’s life. The characteristic of Indonesian Spa Therapist lies in their expertise in deep-tissue massage, eastern politeness, patience and hospitality. They have passed medical test, educated and trained, and certifi ed in their competency of conducting various massages in Spa treatments; such as Balinese massage, Javanese massage, Ukup Urut massage, etc. The design of many Indonesian Spa buildings and facilities uses local wisdom or local philosophy to create the perfect ambience that will fulfi ll the needs of their guests’ fi ve senses. Finally, why are Indonesian Spa Therapist the most sought in the world? Because Indonesian Spa Therapist treat their guest with their typical Indonesian treatment’s motto, which is “touch with your hands, and heal with your soul“. 9 D’Pajajaran Sundanese Spa & Refl exology 10 Spa Destinations 11 The Ritz-Carlton Spa Jakarta, Pacific Place Gaya Spa 12 Spa Destinations Jakarta The Ritz-Carlton Spa Jakarta, Pacifi c Place Martha Tilaar 13 Bali Heritage ali Heritage is a friendly and Baffordable establishment offering traditional and modern spa treatments in a classic Balinese tradition.
