Put on your protective gear and look at this gallery of revolvers, gloks, shotguns and even flamethrowers. Weapons come in all shapes and sizes. Let's take a quick look at some of the different types of firearms. Flintlock weapons were very important weapons in the American Revolution; they also formed the basis of all modern guns. Flintlock and strike cap guns are some of the earliest types of trigger-activated guns. Colonial America depended on these weapons in food, defense and war. Duel was practiced in America throughout the 18th century. These dueling pistols would be the weapon of choice. The U.S. military relied on a larger version of these pistols. The Musket was the soldier's best friend during the American Civil War. They were loaded over a muzzle and were fired with shock caps. The muskets are out of date with the invention of ammo. Revolvers are one of the most popular gun designs of all time. Their reliability and simplicity make them a popular choice for hunting and self-defense. Revolvers like this have played a very important role in the history of the American West. Cowboys, lawmen and criminals all relied heavily on the revolver. This Colt .44 Anaconda is an example of a modern revolver. The basic design has not changed for more than a century. A typical revolver cylinder can be up to six or seven rounds. The cylinder rotates the round into a firing position every time a person pulls the trigger. Here's an example of Smith and Wesson Magnum's revolver. The Magnum rounds are a little longer than standard revolver cartridges, giving them more firepower. Revolvers are not the only type of gun, however. The semi-automatic pistol is one of the best-selling types of handgun in the United States. It often has a higher ammunition capacity than a revolver. Instead of a cylinder, semi-automatic rely on the clip to load ammunition into the firing camera. The handle of the gun is a home clip. The Beretta Model 96 .40 caliber compact pistol is another example of a semi-automatic pistol. Semi-automatic replaced As standard for the U.S. police force. The Glock 17 is one of the most famous pistols. The Globes are known for their reliability and safety. U.S. police forces have taken Glock as a standard weapon issue. The gun silencer screws at the end of the barrel, giving the pressure gas behind the bullet a great space to expand into. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the title of the smallest working revolver in the world goes to the miniature revolver C1ST, manufactured by SwissMiniGun. The tiny firearm measures just over 2 inches (5 centimeters) and weighs less than 1 ounce. Next, we'll look at some other types of firearms. The modern flamethrower appeared in the early 20th century, but the original idea is actually thousands of years old. Here, an American soldier controls a flamethrower in Vietnam during Operation New Castle. The U.S. Navy's zippo flamethrower is being tested from a patrol boat. The unreliability of electronic ignition systems means that operators sometimes have to use a zippo lighter to ignite the fuel when it leaves the nozzle. Shotguns fire a different type of round than handguns. Shotgun shells contain round pellets that are scattered from the barrel of the gun when fired. This makes shotguns a great choice for hunting. Semi-automatic rifles can be legally purchased in the United States. Semiautos are different from machine guns in that they only fire one round every time the trigger is pulled. Machine guns are able to fire multiple shots when the trigger crashes. The machine gun revolutionized the modern war. This is a modern U.S. Army M4A1 assault rifle. Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan rely heavily on these weapons. Finally, we'll look at the most famous type of machine gun in the world on the next page.     The Bow and Arrow in the Book of Mormon William J. Hamblin The distinctive characteristic of missile weapons used in combat is that a warrior throws or propels them to injure enemies at a distance.1 The great variety of missiles invented during the thousands of years of recorded warfare can be divided into four major technological categories, according to the means of propulsion. The simplest, including javelins and stones, is propelled by unaided human muscles. The second technological category — which uses mechanical devices to multiply, store, and transfer limited human energy, giving missiles greater range and power — includes bows and slings. Beginning in China in the late twelfth century and reaching Western Europe by the fourteenth century, the development of gunpowder as a missile propellant created the third category. In the twentieth century, liquid fuels and engines have led to the development of aircraft and modern ballistic missiles, the fourth category. Before gunpowder weapons, all missiles had fundamental limitations on range and effectiveness due to the lack of energy sources other than human muscles and simple mechanical power. The Book of Mormon mentions only early forms of pregunpowder missile weapons. The major military advantage of missile weapons is that they allow a soldier to injure his enemy from a distance, thereby leaving the soldier relatively safe from counterattacks with melee weapons. But missile weapons also have some signicant disadvantages. First, a missile weapon can be used only once: when a javelin or arrow has been cast, it generally cannot be used again. (Of course, a soldier may carry more than one javelin or arrow.) Second, control over a missile weapon tends to be limited; once a soldier casts a missile, he has no further control over the direction it will take.

Defense transformation can be defined as large-scale, discontinuous, and possibly disruptive changes in military weapons, concepts of operations (i.e., approaches to warfighting), and organization. The issue for Congress is how to take the concept of defense transformation into account in assessing and acting on Administration proposals for DOD. The Administration argues that new technologies make defense transformation possible and that new threats to U.S. security make defense transformation necessary. The Administration’s vision for defense transformation calls for placing increased emphasis in U.S. defense planning on irregular warfare, including terrorism, insurgencies, and civil war; potential catastrophic security threats, such as the possession and possible use of weapons of mass destruction by terrorists and rogue states; and potential disruptive events, such as the emergence of new technologies that could undermine current U.S. military advantages. The Administration’s vision for defense transformation calls for shifting U.S. military forces toward a greater reliance on joint operations, network-centric warfare, effects-based operations, speed and agility, and precision application of firepower. Transformation could affect the defense industrial base by transferring funding from “legacy” systems to transformational systems, and from traditional DOD contractors to firms that previously have not done much defense work.
