The Sun Temple CJl Modhera villu>:e in Mahesanu distric.:t of North Gujaral L<; velY famous for its unique architecture. The temple complex was constructed by Bhimdev I, the Solan~i princely in 1026 A.D. The proper temple is about 52 feet in length and 26 feet in width and oblong in shape. The temple has he en so designed that during equinoxes the sun shines directly into the shrine through the doors of the mandapa. The presiding deity of Sun is missinf? kom the temple hut twelve massive images of the sun-God and figures of ther gods and goddesses are still found here. The main features ofthe temple are the Prasada-the Sanctorum, with the Gudhaman dapa, the Sahhamandapa and the kund. The entire temple is elaborately decorated with intricale carvings and stone sculptures. The Sabhamandapa has been laboriously Cecorated on the interior as well as on the outer walls. The G,arba Griha is a closed hall, it: interiors covered with minute carvin!?s. The 'Surya Kund' decorated by intricate ..lrvings, with 108 small temples, is believed to be the best, amongs the ten 'Surya Kund', constructed during the Solanki era. It is 176 feet in length and 120 feet in widt~. There are a numher of panels showing erotic and amorous scenes on the outside walls of temple. These convey the visitors that outside the temple is the materialistic world of sex, dance, music and comforts and inside the temple is, inm!yp~~~e, the God almighly, . .. .. tranquillity and salvation. It is leji to the visitors to choose' b"etWe_en the two. This temple is not only one of the finest examples of Hindu architecture in Gujarat hut ranks among the lew magnificient monuments in the country. People in large numbers visit this temple. It stirs a feeling of intense joy in the viewer even today.
