JUDITH LORBER The Variety of Feminisms and their Contribution to Gender Equality Introduction My focus is the continuities and discontinuities in recent feminist ideas and perspectives. I am going to discuss the development of feminist theories as to the sources of gender inequality and its pervasiveness, and the different feminist political solutions and remedies based on these theories. I will be combining ideas from different feminist writers, and usually will not be talking about any specific writers. A list of readings can be found at the end. Each perspective has made important contributions to improving women's status, but each also has limitations. Feminist ideas of the past 35 years changed as the limitations of one set of ideas were critiqued and addressed by what was felt to be a better set of ideas about why women and men were so unequal. It has not been a clear progression by any means, because many of the debates went on at the same time. As a matter of fact, they are still going on. And because all of the feminist perspectives have insight into the problems of gender inequality, and all have come up with good strategies for remedying these problems, all the feminisms are still very much with us. Thus, there are continuities and convergences, as well as sharp debates, among the different feminisms. Any one feminist may incorporate ideas from several perspec- tives, and many feminists have shifted their perspectives over the years. I myself was originally a liberal feminist, then a so- 8 JUDITH LORBER cialist feminist, and now consider myself to be primarily a so- cial construction feminist, with overtones of postmodernism and queer theory. -

Ranjula Bali Swain and Supriya Garikipati* Abstract An explicit goal of foreign aid is to promote female empowerment and gender equality in developing countries. The impact of foreign aid on these latent variables at the country level is not yet known because of various methodological impediments. We address these by using Structural Equation Models. We use data from the World Development Indicators, the World Governance Indicators and the OECDs Credit Reporting System to investigate if foreign aid has an impact on gender performance of recipient countries at the country level. Our results suggest that to observe improvement in gender performance at the macro-level, foreign aid must target the gender outcomes of interest in a clearly measurable ways. Introduction Gender entered the development dialogue over the period 1975-85 which came to be marked by the United Nations as the UN Decade for Women. The accumulating evidence over this period suggests that economic and social developments are not gender-neutral and improving gender outcomes has important implications both at the household and country levels, especially for the prospect of intergenerational wellbeing (Floro, 1995; Klasen, 1999). Consequentially, gender equality came to be widely accepted as a goal of development, as evidenced particularly by its prominence in the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) and, later on, in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). -

Developmentalism, Modernity, and Dependency Theory in Latin America Ramón Grosfoguel The Latin American dependentistas produced a knowledge that criticized the Eurocentric assumptions of the cepalistas,includingtheorthodoxMarxistandtheNorthAmericanmodern- ization theories. The dependentista school critique of stagism and develop- mentalism was an important intervention that transformed the imaginary of intellectual debates in many parts of the world. However, I will argue that many dependentistas were still caught in the developmentalism, and in some cases even the stagism, that they were trying to overcome. Moreover, although the dependentistas’ critique of stagism was important in denying the “denial of coevalness” that Johannes Fabian (1983) describes as central to Eurocentric constructions of “otherness,” some dependentistas replaced it with new forms of denial of coevalness. The first part of this article dis- cusses developmentalist ideology and what I call “feudalmania” as part of the longue durée of modernity in Latin America. The second part discusses the dependentistas’ developmentalism. The third part is a critical discussion of Fernando Henrique Cardoso’s version of dependency theory. Finally, the fourth part discusses the dependentistas’ concept of culture. In order to distinguish continuity from dis- continuity, we must place the 1945–90 development debates in the context of the longue durée of Latin American history. Mini-Literature review Student Identity Development Theory INTRODUCTION Student development theory is an area of study that tries to identify, describe, explain and predict human behaviors as student’s transition from adolescence to adulthood. Over the past few decades, the study of student development has paid particular focus on identity development of college students. As colleges welcome a more complex and diverse student population, the study (and practice) of college student identity development now considers a more holistic approach. It is a theoretical orientation where political, historical and cultural contexts place socially constructed factors on identity development. Drawing on both foundational scholarship and current research, the purpose of this review is to present the more holistic perspective of identity development currently followed by scholars and researchers in the field to inform a more inclusive learning environment within higher education. One of the more widely used and referenced books on identity development for college students is the 1998 book, Student Development in College. Now in its 2nd edition, the book was one of the first to combine development theories into a series of categories ranging from psychosocial theories, cognitive and moral theories to typological and person-environmental theories. Each theory addressed in the book seeks to answer the following developmental questions (Knefelkamp, Widick, & Parker, 1978 in Evans, Forney, Guido, Renn, and Patton, 2010 p. 24): 1. What interpersonal and intrapersonal changes occur while the student is in college? 2. What factors lead to this development? 3. What aspect of the college environment encourage or retard growth? 4. What development outcomes should we strive to achieve in college? FOUNDATIONAL THEORIES ON STUDENT DEVELOPMENT One of the foundational theories addressed in Student Development in College is Chickering’s Theory of Identity Development. -

The key contestations have revolved around three issues: First, the question of who constitutes a woman; second, what constitute feminist interests; and third, how trans* politics intersects with feminist politics. Despite decades of debates and scholarship, these impasses remain unbroken. In this article, our aim is to work out a way through these impasses. We argue that all three types of contestations are deeply invested in notions of identity, and therefore dealt with in an identitarian way. This has not been constructive in resolving the antagonistic relationship between the trans* movement and feminism. We aim to disentangle the antagonism within anti-trans* feminist politics on the one hand, and trans* politics’ responses to that antagonism on the other. In so doing, we argue for a politics of status-based recognition (drawing on Fraser, 2000a, 2000b) instead of identity-based recognition, highlighting individuals’ specific needs in soci- ety rather than women’s common interests (drawing on Jónasdóttir, 1991), and conceptualising the intersections of the trans* movement and feminism as mutually shaping rather than as trans* as additive to the feminist project (drawing on Walby, 2007, and Walby, Armstrong, and Strid, 2012). -
