THE BOOGIE MAN Boogie pianist Ben Waters has a new record out, entitled ‘Boogie 4 Stu’, paying tribute to Ian Stewart, a founding member of The Rolling Stones, who went on to become their road manager. As a long term fan of Stewart and his playing, Ben talked to his friend Charlie Watts about paying tribute with an album. Watts immediately wanted to be a part of it, which led to fellow Stones Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards hurling themsleves into the fray. Ex-Stones man Bill Wyman threw his name into the hat, along with fellow gifted ivory tinkler Jools Holland. With a star studded guest list, a portrait of Ian Stewart being commissioned by Sir Peter Blake for the cover and proceeds from the album going toward raising funds for the British Heart Foundation, James Gaden thought it was time Ben got to tell people all about it. Ben, you’re an experienced pianist in your own right and have worked with a host of big names - for readers unfamiliar with your work, can you provide a brief overview of your work to date? I started playing piano when I was about 14ish. My first exposure to this kind of music was Ian Stewart playing at my aunt and uncle’s 25th wedding anniversary. Shortly after this, Fats Domino’s 60th Birthday was on TV with Ray Charles and Jerry ‘Boogie For Stu’, as I mentioned just then, this was because of his love for Lionel Lee Lewis. I really fell in love with the music and wanted to start playing. -

(Roy Halston Frowick) (1932-1990) by Shaun Cole
Halston (Roy Halston Frowick) (1932-1990) by Shaun Cole Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com The first international fashion superstar, Halston was a master of cut, detail, and finish. He dressed and befriended some of America's most glamorous women. Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, Babe Paley, Barbara Walters, Lauren Bacall, Bianca Jagger, and Liza Minnelli were just some of the women who wore Halston. Roy Halston Frowick was born on April 23, 1932 in Des Moines, Iowa, the second son of a Norwegian- American accountant with a passion for inventing. Roy developed an interest in sewing from his mother. As an adolescent he began creating hats and embellishing outfits for his mother and sister. Roy graduated from high school in 1950 then attended Indiana University for one semester. After the family moved to Chicago in 1952, he enrolled in a night course at the Chicago Art Institute and worked as a window dresser. Frowick's first big break came when the Chicago Daily News ran a brief story on his fashionable hats. In 1957 he opened his first shop, the Boulevard Salon, on Michigan Avenue. It was at this point that he began to use his middle name as his professional moniker. With the help of a lover twenty-five years his senior, celebrity hair stylist André Basil, Halston further developed his career by moving to New York later in 1957. Basil introduced Halston to milliner Lilly Daché, who offered him a job. Within a year he had been named co-designer at Daché, become the new best friend of several fashion editors and publishers, and left Daché's studio to become head milliner for department store Bergdorf Goodman. -
Undercover Power Play One Friday Afternoon in 1983 the Phone Rang
Undercover Power Play One Friday afternoon in 1983 the phone rang. “Hi, is that Bill Smith? This is Mick Jagger.” Art designer, Bill smith, looked around his studio to see who the prankster was. It was no prank. It was Mick Jagger and he liked the work of Bill Smith Studio. Jagger asked Smith to make a meeting the next Monday and he did. Smith discussed ideas about the new album Undercover with Charlie Watts. Smith was asked to come up with some visuals by that Friday for a band meeting in New York City. Smith was met at JFK airport by a white stretch limo that dropped his stuff at the Central Plaza Hotel and then drove on to Jagger’s New York Residence for a meeting with Jagger, Watts, Ronnie Wood, and Bill Wyman. Smith said, “The cover idea they all loved was a montage of each guy’s head with the head of an animal or a bird or a reptile- ‘undercover’- do you see? I think I prepared two really good montages one of Mick and a cheetah and one of Keith and a panther, the other montages were very rough and needed a lot of work still, to make them really look good, but they all seemed to like the initial idea including the inner bag concept which was some amazing Victorian illustrations of different apple varieties…” Smith’s idea was resurrected in 1992 Jagger told Smith everyone loiked the idea but because by Albert Watson in Los Angeles Keith Richards was not at the meeting he asked Smith where Jagger was photographed with to stay in New York for a few days and complete al the a cheetah for the 25th anniversary of artwork for the album cover and its inner sleeves, while Rolling Stone magazine. -
