In the brief Introduction to vol. iv. I have given a list of the MSS. of the Canterbury Tales; some account of the early printed editions; and some explanation of the methods employed in preparing the present edition. I propose here to discuss further certain important points of general interest. And first, I would say a few words as to the Canon of Chaucer’s Works, whereby the genuine works are separated from others that have been attributed to him, at various times, by mistake or inadvertence. § 2. Canon Of Chaucer’S Works. This has already been considered, at considerable length, in vol. i. pp. 20–90. But it is necessary to say a few words on the whole subject, owing to the extremely erroneous opinions that are so widely prevalent. Sometimes a poem is claimed for Chaucer because it occurs ‘in a Chaucer MS.’ There is a certain force in this plea in a few cases, as I have already pointed out. But it commonly happens that such MSS. (as, for example, MS. Fairfax 16, MS. Bodley 638, and others) are mere collections of poetry of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, from which nothing can safely be inferred as to the authorship of the poems which they contain, unless the scribe distinctly gives the author’s name1 . As a rule, however, the scribes not only omit to mention names, but they frequently omit the very title of the poem, and thus withhold such help as, in many cases, they might easily have afforded. The celebrated first edition of ‘Chaucer’s Works,’ edited by William Thynne in 1532, made no attempt to establish any canon. Thynne simply put together such a book as he believed would be generally acceptable; and deliberately inserted poems which he knew to be by other authors. Some of these poems bear the name of Lydgate; one has the name of Gower; and another, by Hoccleve, is dated 1402, or two years after Chaucer’s death. They were tossed together without much attempt at order; so that even the eleventh poem in the volume is ‘The Floure of Curtesie, made by Ihon lidgate.’ The edition, in fact, is a mere collection of poems by Chaucer, Lydgate, Gower, Hoccleve, Robert Henrysoun, Sir Richard Ros, and various anonymous authors; and the number of poems by other authors almost equals the number of Chaucer’s. The mere accident of the inclusion of a given piece in this volume practically tells us nothing, unless it happens to be distinctly marked; though we can, of course, often tell the authorship from some remark made by Chaucer himself, or by others. And the net result is this; that Thynne neither attempted to draw up a list of Chaucer’s genuine works, nor to exclude such works as were not his. All that we can say is, that he did not knowingly exclude any of the genuine pieces. Nevertheless, he omitted Chaucer’s A.B.C., of which there must have been many copies in existence, for we have twelve still extant. § 3. The mere repetition of this collection, in various reprints, did not confer on it any fresh authority. Stowe indeed, in 1561, added more pieces to the collection, but he suppressed nothing. Neither did he himself exercise much principle of selection; see vol. i. p. 56. He even added The Storie of Thebes, which he must have known to be Lydgate’s. Later reprints were all edited after the same bewildering fashion. § 4. The first person to exercise any discrimination in this matter was Thomas Tyrwhitt, who published a new edition of the Canterbury Tales in five volumes, 8vo., in 1775–8; being the first edition in which some critical care was exercised. After Tyrwhitt had printed the Canterbury Tales, accompanied by a most valuable commentary in the shape of Notes, it occurred to him to make a Glossary. He had not proceeded far before he decided that such a Glossary ought to be founded upon the whole of Chaucer’s Works, instead of referring to the Tales only; since this would alone suffice to shew clearly the nature of Chaucer’s vocabulary. He at once began to draw up something in the nature of a canon. He rejected the works that were marked with the names of other poets, and remorselessly swept away a large number of Stowe’s very casual additions. And, considering that he was unable, at that date, to apply any linguistic tests of any value—that he had no means of distinguishing Chaucer’s rimes from those of other poets—that he had, in fact, nothing to guide him but his literary instinct and a few notes found in the MSS.—his attempt was a fairly good one.

Cornell University 2011 This dissertation, The ‘Bestli’ Outlaw: Wilderness and Exile in Old and Middle English Literature explores the reasons for the survival of the beast-like outlaw, a transgressive figure who highlights tensions in normative definitions of human and natural, which came to represent both the fears and the desires of a people in a state of constant negotiation with the land they inhabited. Although the outlaw’s shelter in the wilderness changed dramatically from the dense and menacing forests of Anglo-Saxon England to the bright, known, and mapped greenwood of the late outlaw romances and ballads, the outlaw remained strongly animalistic, other, and liminal, in strong contrast to premodern notions of what it meant to be human and civilized. I argue that outlaw narratives become particularly popular and poignant at moments of national political and ecological crisis—as they did during the Viking attacks of the Anglo-Saxon period, the epoch of intense natural change following the Norman Conquest, and the beginning of the market revolution at the end of the Middle Ages. Figures like the Anglo-Saxon resistance fighter Hereward, the exiled Marcher lord Fulk Fitz Waryn, and the brutal yet courtly Gamelyn and Robin Hood, represent a lost England imagined as pristine and forested.

There have survived at least sixteen editions published before the appearance of Thynne's, which includes the Canterbury Tales, Troilus and Criseyde, House of Fame, Parliament of Fowls and several other works.<ll Among them, the Canterbury Tales was so popular that as many as five editions were published. Within the last few years even the vestiges of compulsory Greek and Latin have dis­ appeared from the older seats of learning. However rigid a classical syllabus the Eton entrance scholarships may still demand, it can no longer be argued that an Arts Degree focused on non- classical subjects, let alone a degree in other Faculties, neces­ sitates a knowledge of prose composition in these languages. What our courses have lost in relative numbers since a genera­ tion ago we hope they have gained in interest, since they are no longer troubled with the student who is dragooned into Latin. And I do not consider it dragooning to insist that those who are study­ ing Roman-Dutch law shall be able to read a little Cicero in the original. But to exclude the classics except in Penguin translations from the University of York, for example, is an affront to Eboracum and to the shades of Alcuin, who in the eighth century was one of the greatest Latinists in the world. In the mid-twentieth century, the classicist can try to help the scientist to form his new compound words correctly, but let us hope he will not be relegated to this position.

    ABDUCTING THE IMAGINATION: THE METHODOLOGICAL FOUNDATION OF SCIENCE AND CRITICISM IN COLERIDGE AND PEIRCE by Thomas Dechand A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland October, 2014 © 2014 Thomas Dechand All Rights Reserved Abstract The core the dissertation examines S. T. Coleridge’s writings on method and imagination from the 1815 composition of Biographia Literaria through the publication of the “Essays on the Principles of Method” in the 1818 Friend. I demonstrate how these writings clarify, develop, and indeed repair Coleridge’s earlier theory of imagination by articulating its role within a general theory of inquiry meant to comprehend the works of science and literature as methodical investigations. Whereas the Biographia fails in its attempt to ground the imagination within a conception of the self as intellectually intuited in a manner conceived by German Idealists such as Schelling, Coleridge’s “Essays on Method” explore the imagination through a theory of inquiry predicated on the discovery, analysis, and contemplation of relations. I argue that Coleridge aligns the operation of the secondary imagination to a logical function: the eduction of an “idea,” according to Coleridge’s precise sense of that term as a necessarily tautegorical relation – one that expresses the same subject, but with a difference. It is ideas, so conceived, that serve to guide inquiry. Coleridge’s refinement of the theory of imagination is done in serve of his argument that ideas are “constitutive” -- that is, they play a fundamental role in what it is, internal to our constitution and that of the world, that enables inquiry in the first place -- and should be seen as part of Coleridge’s answer to what he identifies as the highest problem of philosophy in the 1816 Statesman’s Manual.

Catholic Christianity, which grew to be the dominant religion in medieval Europe, is monotheistic. Pagan gods were potential idols and/or rivals to the one God. Furthermore, Venus is a goddess, a powerful female pagan figure. A society in which men were almost exclusively responsible for defining and defending orthodox belief would ostensibly be hostile to goddesses. In spite of this, Venus had a remarkable career in the literature of the Middle Ages, as noted in Theresa Tinkle's Medieval Venuses and Cupids, which emphasizes the presence of not one, but multiple medieval Venuses.2 Though there are commonalities between these Venuses, each particular Venus varied according to the aims of the individual writer.
