Apart from a few dozen houses across the River Dun at Bridgehouses and in the Wicker, and a similar number at Parkhill, the whole of the built-up area was within a 600 yard radius centred on the Old Church.1 Within that brief radius the most northerly development was that at Bower Lane (Gibraltar), and only a limited incursion had been made hitherto into Colson Crofts (the fields between West Bar and the river). On the western and north-western edges there had been development along Hollis Croft and White Croft, and to a lesser degree along Pea Croft and Lambert Knoll (Scotland). To the south-west the building on the western side of Coalpit Lane was over the boundary in Ecclesall, but still a recognisable part of the town.2 To the south the gardens and any buildings were largely confined by the Park wall which kept Alsop Fields free of dwellings except for the ingress along the northern part of Pond Lane. The Rivers Dun and Sheaf formed a natural barrier on the east and north-east, and the low-lying Ponds area to the south-east was not ideal for house construction.

    The Economic Development of Sheffield and the Growth of the Town cl740-cl820 Neville Flavell PhD The Division of Adult Continuing Education University of Sheffield February 1996 Volume One THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF SHEFFIELD AND THE GROWTH OF THE TOWN cl740-c 1820 Neville Flavell February 1996 SUMMARY In the early eighteenth century Sheffield was a modest industrial town with an established reputation for cutlery and hardware. It was, however, far inland, off the main highway network and twenty miles from the nearest navigation. One might say that with those disadvantages its future looked distinctly unpromising. A century later, Sheffield was a maker of plated goods and silverware of international repute, was en route to world supremacy in steel, and had already become the world's greatest producer of cutlery and edge tools. How did it happen? Internal economies of scale vastly outweighed deficiencies. Skills, innovations and discoveries, entrepreneurs, investment, key local resources (water power, coal, wood and iron), and a rapidly growing labour force swelled largely by immigrants from the region were paramount. Each of these, together with external credit, improved transport and ever-widening markets, played a significant part in the town's metamorphosis. Economic and population growth were accompanied by a series of urban developments which first pushed outward the existing boundaries. Considerable infill of gardens and orchards followed, with further peripheral expansion overspilling into adjacent townships. New industrial, commercial and civic building, most of it within the central area, reinforced this second phase. A period of retrenchment coincided with the French and Napoleonic wars, before a renewed surge of construction restored the impetus.

Final pre-trip preparations are discussed in a local pub, conveniently located within 10 minutes walk. MONDAY, June 23: 7.30 a.m. Breakfast. 9.15 a.m. We begin by walking towards Endcliffe Park and Whiteley Woods where Shepherd Wheel is located. On the way, we pass some Victorian housing and at the junction of Ecclesall Road, Hunter’s Bar, now covered by trees, is the site of a former toll gate (really toll house). Hunter’s Bar was erected around 1700 as part of a turnpike trust to charge road users for the upkeep of the road. There were 10 turnpike trusts controlling 16 toll gates in Sheffield. Hunter’s Bar was the last to close in 1884. Photo 1: Geography 497 in Endcliffe Park. Parks for recreational purposes are a long established, widespread feature of the Sheffield landscape found throughout the city (outside of the central area). Part of the Sheffield web-based promotional literature claims the city is one of the greenest in Europe, including 78 public parks, 10 gardens and 170 woodlands. Many of the parks are large. Photo 2: Shepherd Wheel 9.52 a.m. Shepherd Wheel is on the Porter River, Whiteley Woods. The site comprises cutlery grinding and polishing operations and a water wheel. The latter which provided power for grinding stones (made out of local sandstone) was driven by a dam created by diverting water from the Porter River.

Hope to see you soon, Kind regards, Janet West Yorkshire Group of the Victorian Society: two visits 13th May: A Day in Roundhay ‘Foremost among the residential suburbs’ was how the City of Leeds described Roundhay in 1937, and Roundhay’s reputation as a retreat from the dirt and bustle of Leeds goes back over two hundred years, first emerging in the opening decades of the 19th century when in 1803 the banker, Thomas Nicholson and the woollen merchant, Samuel Elam purchased the park of Roundhay, the former built the Mansion House but Elam’s motivations were different, for him the enterprise was hopefully a profitable business venture. And after his death in 1810, the land south of Wetherby Road was sold and divided into building plots and number of imposing mansions set in large grounds, were built in the area of Oakwood Lane and North Lane. By 1861 the population of Roundhay was 500 with many still living in cottages and employed in rural occupations. On the death of Thomas Nicholson’s nephew in 1868, the Nicholson land also came onto the market. As is well-known, the mayor of Leeds, John Barran bought 774 acres of the estate, the aim being to retain some 150 acres as a public park and the develop the remainder with houses.

The cutlery industry was based on a multitude of small scale firms situated within Sheffield and the surrounding rural areas with a large number of water-powered sites used for grinding. The arrival of steam at the beginning of the nineteenth century allowed for the development of a few large integrated sites creating much needed accommodation for the growing industry. The workshop buildings have few distinguishing characteristics suggesting that they were not purpose built but could be used by a range of industries. Most of the money for erecting them came from speculators, although established businesses occasionally invested in purpose built property. Builders followed vernacular designs with only larger firms using architects to create frontages which conveyed signs of status. However structures housing individual branches of the trade can be identified from windows, floor construction and internal evidence of the processes carried out. Evidence for power sources comes largely from documentary sources but steam power did not have the same impact as in the textile industry and only with the arrival of gas and electricity at the end of the nineteenth century was power widely adopted by the small scale firms. Potential does exist for the reuse of many of the surviving buildings as offices, studios and domestic space; however the majority of the small scale workshops have disappeared and only the large atypical sites survive.

    FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF MIDDLE-CLASS URBAN CULTURE AND POLITICS: SHEFFIELD 1825-1880 Alan Paul White Submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of Ph.D. The University of Leeds, Department of Social Policy and Sociology Submitted March, 1990 Abstract This thesis examines the formation and development of the Sheffield middle-class through the focus of the Sheffield Club. In chapter two cultural institutions of the town prior to the formation of the Club are examined. The institutional formation and development of the Club is then traced from its foundation in 1843 through to 1880. The third chapter examines the membership of the Club in some detail in order to substantiate the claim that it represents the elite strata of Sheffield society. Investigation of the involvement of the Club membership in other key locations of power in the town is then presented. The fourth chapter examines the struggles concerning the gaining of a charter of incorporation for the town. The political and religious composition of the opposing groups are analysed. The intervention of the West Riding magistrates in the debate is also examined. Lastly, the role of the members of the Sheffield Club is assessed. The fifth and sixth chapters look in detail at the 1852 and 1857 Sheffield elections, and the 1865 West Riding election. The description of the elections is focused through the Sheffield Club in order to assess the strength of party support of its members. The claim that 1868 marks the beginning of the defection of the Sheffield middle class to the Tory party is then examined.
