THE SECRETARY-GENERAL

11 March 1999

Dear Mike,

I was delighted to learn that you had been chosen to receive the 1999 Jacoby International Award presented by the Dashew International Student Center at UCLA. From the conversations we had during my visit to California last year, I readily grasp how deserving you are of an award for enhancing international understanding.

At first glance, it may seem that the United Nations and the entertainment industry occupy entirely different worlds. But movies make the world sit up and listen. Tales of triumph and tragedy, of war and peace, of the famous and infamous; indelible images and unforgettable characters: these have been the touchstones of your career. In the process you have helped to educate and inspire millions of men and women around the world.

For these and many other contributions to the building of a global society based on tolerance and basic respect among all human beings, it gives me great pleasure to offer you my congratulations. May your work enjoy continued success and may you, your family and friends have a memorable evening.

Yours sincerely,

KofTA. Annan

I am not sure how well you know Mr. Medavoy, but some of us wondered / whether you really wish to have a tribute to him published in this way, presumably among a lot of others from people less distinguished than yourself. That is why (at ST's suggestion) I am submitting the letter for your personal consideration rather than using the "Ferdinand" signature.

2/9/99 THE RITA & STANLEY DASHEW INTERNATIONAL STUDENT CENTER

The International Student Center at UCLA has been providing programs and services to UCLA's international students and scholars, since its founding in 1957. Since then, the University's international student population has increased from 2,000 to approximately 10,000 in 1998. The Center offers an extensive orientation program that facilitates their transition into the University and the Los Angeles community. Throughout the year, the Center generates cultural and social programs that foster new friendships between our international students, U.S. students and the community. In addition, the Center offers programs that introduce them to the cultural environment of Los Angeles and Southern California.

These programs provide mutually rewarding experiences. U.S. students learn to understand global events as interpreted through the insights and experiences of international students. International students learn to see the U.S. as a nation of many nationalities and diverse cultures, with strong historical and contemporary traditions of accepting and using the best each immigrant group has to offer.

TOM BRADLEY INTERNATIONAL HALL

As of November 1997, Tom Bradley International Hall has been the new home on the UCLA campus of the Dashew International Student Center and the UCLA Office of International Students and Scholars. It is dedicated to the principle that the future of our society is international hi scope, that our world is increasingly one of interdependence, and that we must look toward a global citizenry to successfully address the challenges of the future. Bradley Hall will continue to be a fitting tribute to Tom Bradley's lifelong dedication to the ideals of international and intercultural friendship.

Designed by the eminent Mexican architect, Ricardo Legoretta, and located at a major gateway to the UCLA campus, Tom Bradley International Hall continues the vital partnership between the community and the University. It serves as a catalyst for interaction on campus among U.S. and international students, scholars, faculty, and the community.
