As you will have noticed, for the fi rst time this catalogue is coming out under the Bloomsbury name instead of the separate Continuum and Bloomsbury Academic imprints. We wanted to give you some background to this rebranding. In 2008, Bloomsbury decided to invest in building a new academic division. Growth since that decision was taken has been very rapid: we now publish around 1,100 titles each year, with a particularly big presence in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and our backlist comprises some 20,000 titles. The purchase of Continuum in 2011 was a key part of this growth. We believe we are stronger as a group, which is why we have taken the strategic decision to adopt the Bloomsbury name for all academic titles that we publish. With effect from 1st September 2012, all new Continuum titles will be published under the Bloomsbury brand. The same applies to all Berg and Bristol Classical Press titles, as of 1st January 2013. This will make it easier for you to fi nd quality publishing in politics and international relations, rather than navigating across a number of imprints. LETTER FROM THE EDITORS LETTER FROM The values of Continuum, Berg and our other imprints, which you have appreciated over the years, are already integral to the larger entity that is Bloomsbury. Much has changed over the past 12 months, but we remain as committed to our authors and to publishing the same high quality textbooks, course books, research monographs, reference works, professional and general interest books, journals and online resources. Publishing in Print and Digital Bloomsbury leads the way in digital publishing and there can be no better example of this commitment than the launch of the Churchill Archive in September 2012. Providing an essential research and teaching tool, it has made more than 800,000 pages of key documents from the twentieth century available online for the fi rst time. Please take a moment to go to www.churchillarchive.com, and don’t forget to recommend this resource to your library if you like what you see! In keeping with the ethos that made Bloomsbury Academic distinctive when the imprint was launched in 2008, we continue to make many of our research-based publications available for free online access, using Creative Commons and Bloomsbury Open licences. Look out for the Open fl ag indicating the new politics titles available under this programme. Highlights With this catalogue, we launch a number of exciting series. In political theory the highlights are Critical Theory and Contemporary Society, Political Theory and Contemporary Philosophy, Theory for a Global Age and Textual Moments in the History of Political Thought. Our new Critical Powers series features essays from leading political philosophers including James Tully and 2012 Leibniz Prize-winner Rainer Forst (p.5) with responses from critical interlocutors. The Continuum Companion to Anarchism, edited by Ruth Kinna (p.12) supports the launch of our Contemporary Anarchist Studies series. In international relations we launch New Directions in Terrorism Studies and we feature Robert Singh’s acclaimed study of Obama’s foreign policy (p.35). New Website Finally we are delighted to announce the launch of a new global Bloomsbury website: www.bloomsbury.com. This site brings together everything under the Bloomsbury Group, including Continuum, Berg, Methuen Drama, Arden Shakespeare, T&T Clark, Bristol Classical Press, and A&C Black titles. The site features enhanced academic functionality such as online previews, digital inspection copies, textbook companion sites and online resources. Go to www.bloomsbury.com/academic for more information. We hope you enjoy reading our latest catalogue. THIRTY-SEVENTH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ECONOMIC CRIME SUNDAY 1st SEPTEMBER - SUNDAY 8th SEPTEMBER 2019 JESUS COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE Fighting economic crime - a shared responsibility! Centre of Development Studies The 37th Cambridge International Symposium on Economic Crime Fighting economic crime- a shared responsibility! The thirty-seventh international symposium on economic crime brings together, from across the globe, a unique level and depth of expertise to address one of the biggest threats facing the stability and development of all our economies. The overarching theme for the symposium is how we can better and more effectively work together in preventing, managing and combating the threat posed by economically motivated crime and abuse. The programme underlines that this is not just the responsibility of the authorities, but us all. These important and timely issues are considered in a practical, applied and relevant manner, by those who have real experience whether in law enforcement, regulation, compliance or simply protecting their own or another’s business. The symposium, albeit held in one of the world’s leading universities, is not a talking shop for those with vested interests or for that matter an academic gathering. We strive to offer a rich and deep analysis of the real issues and in particular threats to our institutions and economies presented by economic crime and abuse. Well over 700 experts from around the world will share their experience and knowledge with other participants drawn from policy makers, law enforcement, compliance, regulation, business and the professions. The programme is drawn up with the support of a number of agencies and organisations across the globe and the Organising Institutions and principal sponsors greatly value this international commitment.

THIRTY-SIXTH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ECONOMIC CRIME SUNDAY 2nd SEPTEMBER - SUNDAY 9th SEPTEMBER 2018 JESUS COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE Unexplained wealth – whose business? The 36thCambridge International Symposium on Economic Crime Unexplained Wealth - whose business? The Thirty-Sixth International Symposium on Economic Crime is the most extensive and ambitious programme that we have so far attempted to put together. The overarching theme is how we can better identify and render accountable unexplained and suspicious wealth. As we increasingly realise that the way in which most of us approach suspect wealth and money laundering lacks efficiency and imposes arguably disproportionate burdens and risks on the financial and business system, it appears a partial answer might be in focusing on the identification of unexplained wealth, but then what do we do? These important and timely issues are pursued in a practical, applied and relevant manner, by those with the benefit of experience from across the world. The symposium, although held in one of the world’s leading universities and recognising the significance of intelligent deliberation, is not a talking shop for those with vested interests – official or commercial. We strive to offer a rich and deep analysis of the real issues and, in particular, threats to our institutions and economies presented by economically motivated crime and misconduct. Therefore, well over 600 experts from around the world will share their experience and knowledge with other participants drawn from policy makers, law enforcement, compliance, regulation, business and the professions. • The Lost Child of Philomena Lee by George Sixsmith ______About the Author
Book Club Discussion Guide The Lost Child of Philomena Lee by George Sixsmith ____________________________________________________ About the Author George Martin Sixsmith, British author and journalist. Sixsmith joined the BBC in 1980 where he worked as a foreign correspondent, most notably reporting from Moscow during the end of the Cold War. He also reported from Poland during the Solidarity uprising and was the BBC's Washington correspondent during the election and first presidency of Bill Clinton. He was based in Russia for five years, the US for four, Brussels for four and Poland for three. Sixsmith left the BBC in 1997 to work for the newly elected government of Tony Blair. He became Director of Communications (a civil service post), working first with Harriet Harman and Frank Field, then with Alistair Darling. His next position was as a Director of GEC plc, where he oversaw the rebranding of the company as Marconi plc. In December 2001, he returned to the Civil Service to join the Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions as Director of Communications in time to become embroiled in the second act of the scandal over Jo Moore. Moore was special adviser to the transport secretary Stephen Byers and had been the subject of much public condemnation for suggesting that a controversial announcement should be "buried" during the media coverage of the September 11, 2001 attacks.[1] Sixsmith incurred the displeasure of Downing Street when his email advising Byers and Moore not to bury more bad news was leaked to the press. Number Ten attempted to "resign him", but had later to issue an apology and pay him compensation.

THIRTY-EIGHTH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ECONOMIC CRIME SUNDAY 5th SEPTEMBER - SUNDAY 12th SEPTEMBER 2021 JESUS COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE Economic crime – who pays and who should pay? The 38th Cambridge International Symposium on Economic Crime Economic Crime - who pays and who should pay? The thirty-eighth international symposium on economic crime brings together, from across the globe a unique level and depth of expertise to address one of the biggest threats facing the stability and development of all our economies. The overarching theme for this year’s symposium focuses on who is actually harmed and pays for economically motivated crime and who should be held more accountable. The direct and especially the indirect costs, to us all, of economic and enterprise crime are considerable and impact profoundly on the more vulnerable. Our legal systems are not in the main successful in holding those who engage in or benefit by economic crime accountable. Indeed, crime does pay and often the measures we adopt to discourage it raise more issues than they answer. Possibly we need to place much more responsibility on those who are in a position, by virtue of what they do or where they are placed, to prevent and discourage abuse. These important and timely issues are considered in a practical, applied and relevant manner, by those who have real experience whether in law enforcement, regulation, compliance or simply protecting their own or another’s business. The symposium albeit held in one of the world’s leading universities is not a talking shop for those with vested interests or a rarefied academic gathering.

It tells the true story of Philomena’s 50 year search for her son, Anthony, who was taken from her for adoption, and Sixsmith’s efforts to help her find him. Philomena is played by Judi Dench and Martin Sixsmith by Steve Coogan, better known as the television comedian, who created the Alan Partridge character on television and campaigner against dodgy journalism. It was suggested to Martin Sixsmith by the daughter of Philomena Lee, when he met her at a party, that he might write a story about her mother, a retired Irish nurse, who was forced to give up her son born out of wedlock in Ireland nearly fifty years ago. Although not immediately attracted to the idea of writing a book, Sixsmith eventually met Philomena and decided to investigate further. Philomena, after meeting a young man in 1951, became pregnant and was sent by her father to Sean Ross Abbey in Roscrea, in the south of Ireland, After giving birth she was forced to work in the convent laundry, seven days a week, for four years, to pay for the cost of her stay at the Abbey.

THIRTY-FIFTH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ECONOMIC CRIME SUNDAY 3rd SEPTEMBER - SUNDAY 10th SEPTEMBER 2017 JESUS COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE PREVENTING AND CONTROLLING ECONOMIC CRIME IN THE MODERN WORLD – whose responsibility and are they really up to it? The 35thCambridge International Symposium on Economic Crime Preventing and controlling economic crime in the modern world – whose responsibility and are they really up to it? The thirty-fifth international symposium on economic crime is the most extensive and ambitious programme that we have so far attempted. The over-arching theme is simply who is responsible for protecting us from economic crime and are they up to this important task? If not, then how can we assist them to do a better job – for all our sakes! These vital issues are pursued in a practical, applied and relevant manner, by those who with the benefit of experience are best placed to do so. The symposium, although held in one of the world’s leading universities and recognising the significance of intelligent deliberation, is not a talking shop for those with vested interests – official or commercial. We strive to offer a rich and deep analysis of the real issues and in particular threats to our institutions and economies presented by economically motivated crime and misconduct. We are also equally concerned to offer and assist in developing if not solutions at least better practices based on real experience and application. Therefore, well over 600 experts from around the world will share their experience and knowledge with other participants drawn from policy makers, law enforcement, compliance, regulation, business and the professions.
