FTO CONGRATULATES NSW INSIDE FILM AWARD WINNERS

The FTO congratulates the cast and crew of the feature film SUBURBAN MAYHEM, winner of three Inside Film Awards.

SUBURBAN MAYHEM, supported by the FTO with development and production investment and a Regional Filming Fund grant, won major three awards - Best Actress (Emily Barclay), Best Music (, Norman Parkhill) and Best Editing (Stephen Evans).

SUBURBAN MAYHEM was filmed entirely on location in New South Wales, in and around the regional centre of Newcastle.

The FTO would also like to congratulate NSW producer and former FTO Board Member Jan Chapman who received the Living Legend IF Award for her contribution to the Australian screen industry.

FTO’s AURORA 2006 FILMS IN FINAL WORKSHOP IN SYDNEY

The final phase of Aurora 2006, the FTO’s script development workshop, is underway in Sydney with highly regarded international and Australian advisors and actors working with film teams on script read throughs and marketing and finance strategies.

Five scripts and their creative teams were selected for stage one of Aurora, a week-long residential held earlier this year. The workshop provides creative feedback on the new drafts of the five scripts by Australian and international advisors, read-throughs with some of ’s top actors, and one-on-one meetings with international acquisition executives and Australian distributors about marketing and financing of the films.

The advisors are Christophe Mercier, Vice President for Fox Searchlight Europe; San Fu Maltha, founder of Fu Works, an independent, internationally minded film development, production and distribution company based in Amsterdam; Australian Martha Coleman now based in London as Head of Creative Affairs at Material Entertainment; Andy Spaulding, Executive Vice-President of US company Echo Lake Productions; John Collee, screenwriter whose credits include MASTER AND COMMANDER and HAPPY FEET; Shirley Barrett, director of WALK THE TALK, LOVE SERENADE and LOVE MY WAY; Ken Sallows, editor of many Australian films including CHOPPER, PROOF, GETTIN’ SQUARE, TOM WHITE and IRRESISTIBLE; Sue Murray, Executive Director of Fandango Australia; Alan Finney, Vice President and Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand of Buena Vista International; and Brian Rosen, Chief Executive of the FFC.

The advisors will consider the projects in relation to the domestic and international marketplace. Actors who are working with the filmmaking teams on script read throughs include , Vince Colosimo, , Genevieve Lemon, Bojana Novakovic and Emily Browning. PITCH FOR NORTHERN RIVERS DOCUMENTARY MAKERS – AIDC OPPORTUNITY

The winner of the SCREENWORKS annual pitching competition – this year for documentaries only – will get automatic entry to the 2007 Australian International Documentary Conference (AIDC), in Adelaide, to pitch to national and international commissioners and buyers there.

The SCREENWORKS pitch will take place Thursday 7 December at the Bangalow pub.

THE MAN WHO SAVED A MILLION BRAINS, won best documentary - Science, Technology and the Environment - at the ATOM Awards in Australia.

SCREEN MUSIC AWARDS, FTO SUPPORTED APRA-AGSC 2006 WINNERS

The FTO congratulates Paul Grabowsky, composer of UNFOLDING FLORENCE: The Many Lives of Florence Broadhurst, and the composers of R.A.N, , Albert David, Kadu and Key Torres Straight Island Composers for their achievements at the 2006 APRA-AGSC Screen Music Awards.

Paul Grabowsky won the award for Best Music for a Documentary and the R.A.N. composers won for Best Soundtrack Album.

UNFOLDING FLORENCE: The Many Lives of Florence Broadhurst and R.A.N. were produced with the financial assistance of the FTO.

DIGITAL VISUAL FX SCHEME- ROUND 12 DEADLINE FEBRUARY 2007

The Digital Visual FX Scheme (DFX Scheme) was established in 1998 to provide on-the-job skills development opportunities in the digital fx industry. Through the Scheme, the FTO provides subsidies to leading NSW digital fx companies to employ digital artists for six-month traineeships. There is one application deadline per year, with up to 5 trainees placed annually.

AURORA SCRIPTWRITING DEADLINE – DECEMBER 11

The FTO is inviting applications for the next Aurora scriptwriting program by Monday 11 December, 2006.

Aurora has one round per year, which supports up to four projects through an intensive residential script workshop and development process. The program also assists producers with marketing their films to international and Australian financiers.

Scripts need to be well developed and at least at second draft stage. A director and producer must be attached as well as the writer. Teams comprising of writer/directors with a producer attached, as well as co-writers with a director and producer attached will also be considered. One member of the team may reside outside New South Wales.

Films which have gone through Aurora include SOMERSAULT and LITTLE FISH. Some of the filmmakers whose scripts have gone through the program include Liz Watts, Vincent Sheehan, Rowan Woods, Cate Shortland, Anthony Anderson, David Caesar, Kriv Stenders, Jeremy Sims, Samantha Lang, Christina Andreef and Helen Bowden.

POPCORN TAXI – FIRST SCREENING OF EMULSION – NOVEMBER 27

Join the cast, crew and local distributors, at the first Sydney screening of Jonathan Ogilvie's new indy feature EMULSION, a “no-budget” film, soundtrack courtesy of Chris Abrahams (The Necks). Followed by a Q&A with the Cast & Crew.

Screening on Monday, November 27th at 7.30pm at Greater Union, Bondi Junction, Sydney.

Founded in 1999 by independent filmmakers Gary Doust and Matt Wheeldon, Popcorn Taxi is a regular in-depth film event, run by filmmakers for filmmakers. It screens films of all types and invites directors, producers, cinematographers, editors, actors and writers on stage to talk about their work in greater detail.

AFC’S MEETMARKET RETURNS TO AIDC – DEADLINE NOVEMBER 27

The Australian Film Commission (AFC), in conjunction with the Australian International Documentary Conference (AIDC), announced MeetMarket will return to the AIDC in Adelaide, 23–26 February 2007.

MeetMarket provides documentary makers with an opportunity to meet with international and domestic executives and to pitch their projects in one-on-one scheduled meetings in a marketplace environment at the AIDC.

Applicants submit an on-line two-minute video pitch teaser and synopsis of their project.
