EXTRAORDINARY MUSIC IN REMARKABLE PLACES

Chamber Music, Lieder and Recitals in and around Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks www.twomoorsfestival.co.uk WELCOME

I travel to London often these days, always doing so by train. The journey alone is worth it as GWR whizzes at high speed through the Somerset Levels, across Salisbury Plain, and parallel with the River Kennet before hitting the old Horlicks factory at Slough, at which point delightful countryside merges into the suburbs. The time spent is never wasted. I reflect on the heart- warming amount of music making in the British Isles, from village and church choirs, choral societies and country house operas, to Glyndebourne, the Proms, flag-flying orchestras, music clubs and festivals - the category into which the Two Moors falls. The Festival has earned a reputation for bringing chamber music of the highest quality to the South West. It is also noted for Lieder recitals and the unique Young Musicians Competition. Audience numbers have risen annually as a result of the constant stream of exceptional artists who flock to the Festival to share their music with us. Many people combine a holiday

“Esteemed artists abound with Stephen Kovacevich, , Dame Felicity Lott giving recitals and a masterclass; Mark Padmore has a delicious programme up his sleeve as does the phenomenal violinist, Tamsin Waley Cohen, whose CPE Bach’s project is not be missed.”

in one of the UK’s most scenic areas with visiting the Festival, often undertaking moorland hikes before turning up at one of our more remote venues. There is no dress code and full walking gear is enthusiastically welcomed! Thank goodness I hadn’t been writing this introduction in March, when we were still gripped by the unusually long and snowy winter here on Exmoor, waiting for signs of a much delayed spring. As soon as the daffodils sprang to life and the sun came out my somewhat dampened spirits lifted and, on surveying the programme, I was happy to see that it holds many treasures. As always, my aim is to produce thirty concerts to enrich the minds of our wonderfully attentive audiences and to enable them to experience as broad a range of genres as possible within a ten day period. Esteemed artists abound with Stephen Kovacevich, Yevgeny Sudbin, Dame Felicity Lott giving recitals and a masterclass; Mark Padmore has a delicious programme up his sleeve as does the phenomenal violinist, Tamsin Waley Cohen, whose CPE Bach’s project is not be missed. So do read on, book your tickets and come to as many concerts as you can, bringing your friends with you. We very much look forward to welcoming you to this, our 18th Festival.

One of Ravel’s best loved works, his String Quartet in F major, was written in 1903, just over a hundred years after the publication of Beethoven’s Op 18 No 1 quartet, also in F. These quartets, so representative of the string quartet repertoire, couldn’t be in greater contrast to Boccherini’s Guitar Quintet Fandango. Andrey Lebedev, one of the finest young guitar players to emerge this century, joins the Alberni Quartet as part of their Two Moors Residency.

It will be performed in a semi-staged version by an extraordinary group of young professional singers under the direction of the American baritone Chase Hopkins. It is a chance to enjoy the spectacular arias of this opera with theatrical staging to connect the characters, story, music and drama. With Harvey Davies at the piano and fresh from performances in Manchester and London, this is one not to be missed.

A church service is something of a tradition within the Festival. Over the years Matins, Songs of Praise and Holy Communion have been held in some of the most beautiful churches spread across the two moors. This time it is the turn of St Peter’s Church, Tiverton, to play host with a service of Choral Evensong directed by Mark Lee and the choristers of Bristol Cathedral.

There will be a collection in aid of the Young Musicians programme and St Peter’s Church during the service

The North Devon Sinfonia won BBC Four’s Great Orchestral Challenge in 2016. The Orchestra competed with amateur orchestras from all over the UK and were recognised for their ability, enthusiasm as well as revealing the amount of musical talent that exists in one of the remotest areas of England. Since then, the orchestra has travelled to Korea where they received considerable critical acclaim. Oboist Polly Bartlett, joint winner of the Festival’s Young Musicians Competition in 2016, joins them. Polly is a Scholar at the Royal College of Music and was also a Finalist in BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2015. It goes without saying that there couldn’t be a better way of ending the Festival than with some GRIEG music from Bernstein’s iconic and ground-breaking Peer Gynt Suite Op 46 No 1 musical, West Side Story. BUSINESS PARTNERS

It is often a challenge to fund a festival such as ours due to the range of events, the high calibre of our artists and the small size of most of our delightful venues. The Two Moors Festival is a registered charity, and relies on the annual support of its members, sponsorship from businesses, donations from individuals and grants from trusts and foundations, as well as the box office income, to pay for the programme.
