Patron: HRH The Countess of Wessex GCVO 12 - 21 OCTOBER 2018 EXTRAORDINARY MUSIC IN REMARKABLE PLACES Chamber Music, Lieder and Recitals in and around Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks www.twomoorsfestival.co.uk WELCOME I travel to London often these days, always doing so by train. The journey alone is worth it as GWR whizzes at high speed through the Somerset Levels, across Salisbury Plain, and parallel with the River Kennet before hitting the old Horlicks factory at Slough, at which point delightful countryside merges into the suburbs. The time spent is never wasted. I reflect on the heart- warming amount of music making in the British Isles, from village and church choirs, choral societies and country house operas, to Glyndebourne, the Proms, flag-flying orchestras, music clubs and festivals - the category into which the Two Moors falls. The Festival has earned a reputation for bringing chamber music of the highest quality to the South West. It is also noted for Lieder recitals and the unique Young Musicians Competition. Audience numbers have risen annually as a result of the constant stream of exceptional artists who flock to the Festival to share their music with us. Many people combine a holiday “Esteemed artists abound with Stephen Kovacevich, Yevgeny Sudbin, Dame Felicity Lott giving recitals and a masterclass; Mark Padmore has a delicious programme up his sleeve as does the phenomenal violinist, Tamsin Waley Cohen, whose CPE Bach’s project is not be missed.” 2 Online booking: www.twomoorsfestival.co.uk “PROMOTING STAND-OUT SOUTH WEST EVENTS IS AT THE HEART OF ONE VOICE’S WORK: WE ARE PROUD TO SUPPORT THE BEAUTIFUL TWO MOORS FESTIVAL.” in one of the UK’s most scenic areas with visiting the Festival, often undertaking moorland hikes before turning up at one of our more remote venues. There is no dress code and full walking gear is enthusiastically welcomed! Thank goodness I hadn’t been writing this introduction in March, when we were still gripped by the unusually long and snowy winter here on Exmoor, waiting for signs of a much delayed spring. As soon as the daffodils sprang to life and the sun came out my somewhat dampened spirits lifted and, on surveying the programme, I was happy to see that it holds many treasures. As always, my aim is to produce thirty concerts to enrich the minds of our wonderfully attentive audiences and to enable them to experience as broad a range of genres as possible within a ten day period. Esteemed artists abound with Stephen Kovacevich, Yevgeny Sudbin, Dame Felicity Lott giving recitals and a masterclass; Mark Padmore has a delicious programme up his sleeve as does the phenomenal violinist, Tamsin Waley Cohen, whose CPE Bach’s project is not be missed. So do read on, book your tickets and come to as many concerts as you can, bringing your friends with you. We very much look forward to welcoming you to this, our 18th Festival. Beethoven’s Sonata in A radiates humour and joy and is considered the first sonata that gives equal weight to both cello and piano.
