Kyselyn avulla selvitin, miten suomalaiset henkilöt, joiden äidinkieli on muu kuin englanti, suhtautuvat englanninkielisiin, eri etnisiin ryhmiin viittaaviin termeihin. Keskityn tutkielmassani erityisesti siihen, tuntevatko kyselyyn vastaajat heille esitetyt termit ja kuinka loukkaavina he pitävät niitä. Osaa tutkimuksessa mukana olevista termeistä pidetään englanninkielisissä maissa yleisesti loukkaavina. Koska tällaisia sanoja ei yleensä opeteta vieraiden kielten oppitunneilla, tutkin myös vaikuttaako termien tuntemiseen henkilön asuminen englanninkielisessä maassa tai englanninkielisen koulun käyminen. Lisäksi tarkastelen, onko suomenkielisten ja ruotsinkielisten vastaajien välillä eroja siinä, kuinka todennäköisesti termit tunnistetaan ja kuinka loukkaavina niitä pidetään. Kyselyyn vastasi yhteensä 165 henkilöä, joista suurin osa oli suomen- tai ruotsinkielisiä. Vastaajia pyydettiin arvioimaan termien African-American, American Indian, Black, Chinaman, Cracker, Eskimo, Frenchman, Jap, Jew, Jewish, Kike, Mulatto, Native American, Nigger, Paki, Redskin, ja White trash loukkaavuutta tai ilmoittamaan, jos englanninkielinen termi ei ole tuttu. Vastaajilla oli myös mahdollisuus antaa avoimia kommentteja valinnoistaan. Taustatiedoissa vastaajilta kysyttiin, olivatko he asuneet englanninkielisessä maassa tai käyneet englanninkielistä koulua ja kuinka kauan. Tutkimus osoitti, että mikäli vastaaja oli asunut englanninkielisessä maassa tai käynyt englanninkielistä koulua, hän tunsi useammin tutkimuksessa olleet termit kuin muut tutkimukseen vastaajat. Kaiken kaikkiaan kyselyyn osallistujat kuitenkin tunsivat tutkimuksen termit melko hyvin. Sanat Cracker, Kike ja Paki olivat kyselyn vastaajille kaikkein tuntemattomimmat. Ruotsinkieliset vastaajat tunnistivat tutkimuksen termit hieman suomenkielisiä vastaajia useammin. Ruotsinkieliset vastaajat myös pitivät yleisesti ottaen tutkimuksen termejä hieman vähemmän loukkaavina kuin suomenkieliset vastaajat. Vastaajan iällä tai sukupuolella ei näyttäisi tutkimuksen valossa olevan merkitystä sille, kuinka loukkaaviksi termit koettiin. On her trip she had used the word negro to refer to a person of African descent and had caused a few raised eyebrows. She had used the word in perfect innocence, without realising it was not considered a neutral expression, as this was the word she had learned at school in English class in the 1960s. Furthermore, the word with the same linguistic background, neekeri, was still considered normal, and even an everyday expression, in her native language Finnish. This example is a clear indicator that words have different connotations associated with them and that these connotations vary in different cultures, from one individual to another, and also through time. For example, Thorne (1990) says that Jap is “generally more pejorative in American and Australian speech than in British.” French (1980: 117) takes this view a little further and does not only talk how these connotations are represented in different varieties of English but rather talks about the social environment by stating that “verbal aggression […] has meaning only within the social environment in which it is fostered.” French (ibid.) believes “that particular social environments share common negative subcultural groups.” French (1980: 118) further states that most people sharing the same cultural environment should be able to recognize socially sanctioned verbal slurs, even those who do not necessarily share the sentiments connoted by these terms. It is my hypothesis, then, that non-native speakers may not be familiar with all the underlying meanings of certain words. Therefore, this thesis studies the attitudes of Finnish non- native speakers of English towards English terms referring to different ethnic groups, specifically whether they recognize the terms that are presented to them and, additionally, how offensive they think that the words are. Stereotypes and Economic Conditions of Poor Whites in the U.S. "White trash" is, in many ways, the white Other. When we think about race in the U.S., oftentimes we find ourselves constrained by cat- egories we've inherited from a kind of essentialist multiculturalism, or what we call "vulgar multiculturalism."^ Vulgar multiculturalism holds that racial and ethic groups are "authentically" and essentially differ- ent from each other, and that racism is a one-way street: it proceeds out of whiteness to subjugate non-whiteness, so that all racists are white and all victims of racism are non-white. Critical multiculturalism, as it has been articulated by theorists such as those in the Chicago Cultural Studies Group, is one example of a multiculturalism which tries to com- plicate and trouble the dogmatic ways vulgar multiculturalism has un- derstood race, gender, and class identities. "White trash" identity is one we believe a critical multiculturalism should address in order to further its project of re-examining the relationships between identity and social power. Unlike the "whiteness" of vulgar multiculturalism, the whiteness of "white trash" signals something other than privilege and social power.

Horton Doctor of Philosophy in Education and the Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory University of California, Berkeley Professor Na’ilah Nasir, Chair This dissertation is an intervention into Critical Whiteness Studies, an ‘additional movement’ to Ethnic Studies and Critical Race Theory. It systematically analyzes key contradictions in working against racism from a white subject positions under post-Civil Rights Movement liberal color-blind white hegemony and "Black Power" counter-hegemony through a critical assessment of two major competing projects in theory and practice: white anti-racism [Part 1] and New Abolitionism [Part 2]. I argue that while white anti-racism is eminently practical, its efforts to hegemonically rearticulate white are overly optimistic, tend toward renaturalizing whiteness, and are problematically dependent on collaboration with people of color. I further argue that while New Abolitionism has popularized and advanced an alternative approach to whiteness which understands whiteness as ‘nothing but oppressive and false’ and seeks to ‘abolish the white race’, its ultimately class-centered conceptualization of race and idealization of militant nonconformity has failed to realize effective practice.

  • Introduction: Memories of Slavery
    INTRODUCTION MEMORIES OF SLAVERY On 27 April 1848, the Second Republic abolished slavery in its French overseas colonies thus ending three centuries of African slave trade and forced plantation labor. One hundred fifty years later the government of the Fifth Republic for the first time or- ganized extensive official celebrations to commemorate this historic event. The past was resurrected, invading the present with countless memories—though undoubtedly not the same for the French nation and for the formerly enslaved popula- tions in the overseas départements of Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, and Reunion.1 The governmental commemorations of April 1998 were varied and all took place in France. President Jacques Chirac gave an opening speech, Prime Minister Lionel Jospin hon- ored the abolitionary fervor of the small village of Champag- ney, various ministers presented plaques commemorating important abolitionary figures and French Caribbean artists were invited for a variety of artistic performances. The over- seas domains also organized their own local commemorative functions including exhibitions, conferences, and theater pro- ductions as well as the inauguration of memorials. In Mar- tinique, for instance, scenes of the slave trade were reenacted with the arrival of a slave vessel, the unloading of slaves, and the reconstitution of a slave market. In Guadeloupe, a flame honoring the memory of the nèg mawon (fugitive slave) passed from township to township during the entire year preceding the 150th anniversary and was returned to its starting point amid celebrations, dances, and traditional music. 2 Catherine Reinhardt The most revealing aspects of the commemoration lie in the articles of major French and French Caribbean newspapers such as Le Monde, Libération, Le Figaro, and France-Antilles writ- ten for the occasion.
